  • "Craftsmans Cottage was a fabulous place to stay in the Lake District."

Although the cottage is in the centre of the village there is no noise and it looks over the churchyard and some fields so you feel a world away. It is furnished really well and is comfortable, cosy and warm. Parking although not at the cottage itself is only a couple of minutes walk away (permit provided), altough we found there was plenty to do in and around the village itself and didn't move the car all weekend. We would definitely stay at Craftsmans again!

  • "Lovely cottage in a superb location."

Plenty walks just through the church gates at the side of the property. There was a draught coming from front door making hallway and kitchen really cold. Not ideal when - 4 outside. I think a heavy curtain behind door could help with this. Luckily the rest of the property is lovely and warm. I think what would really make this cottage special is if the window sills were made into proper window seats so you could sit and enjoy the views. Will definitely return. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Loved everything about it. Would like to re book for same week next year but only six nights available and the price is quite high. The decor is amazing, loved the sheepskins and lighting in both bedroom and living room. The kitchen had everything we needed, we appreciated the washer dryer. The bathroom was super trendy, the shower very powerful. Loved it all. A nice quiet corner of Hawkshead with walks from the door. We enjoyed the food and hospitality at the Queens Head pub, they really made us feel welcome. I would highly recommend this cottage. Not a criticism, a rug would have been welcome in the living area, there was one on the cottage pictures and I understand things get over used so maybe this was the reason it was removed. I tried to change the bulbs in the bathroom, but couldn’t get them out. Didn’t spoil our stay. Thanks for everything and for allowing our dog to stay with us. Please leave a pen so visitors can leave feedback in the guest book.

  • "We really had a great stay at this lovely cottage and it's the first time we have stayed in the Lake District."

The location is wonderful and the area, itself, is really picturesque. We were lucky (??) enough to have a massive snowfall on the second day which really added to the charm. The cottage is lovely and warm and has everything you could possibly need. There are great walks to be had, straight out of the door and Hawkshead is bustling with shops, pubs and great places to eat. Everywhere seems to be dog-friendly too, which is a real bonus. In the cottage, the layout is perfect with the whole upstairs being a large lounge with a roaring fire and great views of the surrounding countryside. Downstairs has the double bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, all perfectly sized for a couple with plenty of wardrobe/drawer space for all your clothes. My only gripe (and it's a small one) is that there are 2 or 3 light-bulbs out in the kitchen, making it a little awkward to work. A small point but I believe it has been mentioned before in a review. All in all, a terrific place to stay and I am sure we will be back. Thanks

The cottage is really tastefully decorated and well appointed. Sadly, the agents aren’t keeping up with cleaning and maintenance. There was rubbish and debris on the balcony, the yard is filthy and smells of dog pee and the floors inside are filthy. If this can be sorted we would certainly consider coming back.

  • "Great location and nicely decorated cottage but a little tired."

We weren't blown away by this cottage, mainly as it wasn't kept in the best condition in comparison to the photos. Plus, there was no permit left for us and we had to pay for parking during our stay - fortunately Sykes refunded us after we submitted parking receipts. We loved Hawkshead though and there are some great walks nearby. Our dog Archie loved it too and the dog shower was super useful. I appreciate that whilst most of my feedback will be constructive and actionable, some of it is just unfortunately the nature of the cottage. Pros: * Great location, right in the centre of Hawkshead * Tastefully decorated * Dog shower is extremely helpful (although located in a really awkward spot within the bin cupboard) * Cosmetics and shampoo, shower gel inculded Cons: * Bed linen included but we only got one bath towel between us * Patio with furniture covered in bird poo and hadn't been cleaned in a while * The cottage is in a spot where the sun never hits and it felt cold and damp even during the hottest week in August * No garden - we had to take our dog to the next door cemetery * Inside covered in spider webs and felt a little damp - extraction fan in bathroom didn't work at all and our towel never fully dried * Great that it's dog friendly, but it definitely had some peculiar smells and I don't think they have ever washed the bed throw * My husband kept banging his head on the door frames as the cottage has very low ceilings. Even I struggled and I am 5f2. * No parking permit left (see comment above) * We were sad to receive a small pack of white Warbutons loaf when the photos show nice bread and a bottle of wine...I don't think post Covid is a good excuse for being stingy on the hospitality!

...the snow helped. Main feedback is just around glasses, odd selection and no normal wine glasses which was a bit annoying. Also most places I've stayed there has been some logs and fire lighters. We did bring our own but I think it's a bit part and parcel when there is a log burner. It looks like people have then decided to unscrew the ones under the seat (I was guessing these were decorative) and using them.....not ideal. Overall the stay was lovely and just what we needed. I would stay again but just a couple of things that would enhance.

If taking youngsters you will need a travel cot and high chair. The cottage is located so close to the village centre that you feel like a resident. The unloading and loading of cars is a bit tricky and be careful not to bang your head on the low doors (definitely not a place for very tall people). We loved it and will definitely be back.

Dog shower especially useful not only for dogs but walking gear too! Property rather restricted in terms of drying space though. As with most holiday rentals the lack of hand towel for the kitchen is a real issue also the ice box needed defrosting as it was completely iced up. The crockery is a little sparse even for two and there were no wine glasses. Lovely comfortable bed and lounge and super that the heating was easy to control so we could turn it down and off. Log burner is great for the evenings although most properties provide the first basket logs etc for your arrival night.

Very convenient location for Hawkeshead, the only confusion initially arriving at the property was the fact that we could turn right off Main Street, we thought it was no entry, not realising it was possible for access only. If I could give one constructive piece of feedback, the crockery and pans provided are a little tired and could do with replacing. Overall great experience, would happily return.

Just no tin opener, front and bedroom doors very low. Ouch bumped our heads a couple of times. Nail sticking out a bit from floor board in lounge by tv. Luckily dog didn’t stand on it. Toaster only works on inside bits, back yard could do with a jet wash and flower boxes sorted, huge weeds growing in them. Door key a bit temperamental. Dish washer door opened on its own near when finished. Couldn’t work drier on washing machine. Probably just me having a can’t be bothered time. Just silly things to put right. Is a lovely cottage. Nice and quiet town. Close to everything, 4 pubs. Try Red Lion it’s the cheapest, nice cool bedroom which a woman of my age needs, sorted parking after asking locals. • "Pros to stay: good location, nicely furnished, charming building Cons to stay: 1/ the kitchen tap is a safety hazard (mentioned repeatedly by previous guest), extremely wobbly especially considering that the left lever provides scolding hot water!"

It would also be useful for guests if it were explained next to the sink that the right lever actually operates as THE mixer tap in case someone prefers to use the sink to wash two plates, a pot and some cutlery instead of the dishwasher (this would save some water too) 2/ half of the crockery is chipped and should be replaced 3/ the beam above the bedroom door really needs some cushioning (examples for this can be seen in historic buildings/castles owned by the National Trust). I am only 5’ 6’’ high and lost counting the number of times I banged my head in it inadvertently. While this may be one of the characters of an old building, most guests do not live in such buildings and it is not easy to remember to duck every time one wants to cross such a low beam. The kitchen extractor fan is also low and with the sharp corners it is another potential for painful bumps. 4/ the grouting around the shower and the bottom of the shower glass is covered with black mould! It is another potential health hazard and certainly not inviting! 5/ there is no curtain next to the bed to provide sufficient privacy if the lights are on. To have a dark room at night we needed to use some towels. 6/ it would be more welcoming if the heating would be kept at least at luke warm temperatures on the day of arrival for new guests during winter times. When we arrived in the evening it was only a mere 12 oC and took quite a while to warm up the rooms. Due to Storm Arwen we had to cut our stay short. Luckily we spent only one night without heating and electricity. We followed the advice of previous guests to take our own supply of logs and bought some coffee logs and kindles which we could have used in the wood burner. Unfortunately, we never thought that we have to supply the matches as well (our fault). We advise future guest to take everything (matches, kindling, logs and some paper) if you want to use the wood burner. Please be also aware that the logs under the wooden seat near the stove are actually NAILED! to the back of the seat and not left for your comfort! We found this very mean I’m afraid. In the specifics it is mentioned that there would be some logs left at the property for the first night. This was certainly not the case. 7/ the entrance door could do with draught proofing all around. There is at least a finger wide gap around the sides. The wind rattled the door most of the night until we managed to stuff the gap with some tissue. Over all, unless the owner prepares to pay more attention to details such as above, sorry, but we would not recommend to stay at this property.

Thank you for your feedback. Lakelovers manage Craftsman Cottage on behalf of the owner, so please do accept our apologies. The hot tap in the kitchen was attended to and repaired. The nature of old properties does lead to a few quirks as mentioned (low beams, lower extractor fan low sockets), but we will look to see if anything further can be done about these. We will also look into the other maintenance issues pointed out. Lakelovers stopped offering log starter kits a while ago, so i am sorry if they info/pictures mislead this. We have updated the wording to reflect this. Thank you. Lakelovers Owner Team Property Owner

On the pictures this accommodation looks beautiful but in reality it is lacking final touches and more importantly a good clean. I could go on all day from dog waste and dog hair on the patio, dishwasher full of unwashed plates, mouldy shower screen, bath plug full of old hair, numerous items falling out of the rug when we lifted it up to shake. Not to mention the plug socket so far to the floor you have to wedge your plug in which didn't feel safe at all, the boiling tap that is wobbly. The TV needs updating to a bigger one, it was like watching a laptop screen. Final note for future guests, 1 they say you can use logs if you replenish, the log basket was empty and no mention where we can buy more from. Bin day is actually Tuesday 0630 and not Friday as the book says. I would not recommend this as dog friendly, it's not big enough to swing a cat. Couple of small niggles re incorrect info given in folder - Wifi is incorrect as is bin collection day and there were no poo bags for dogs. The freezer was unusable as it was totally iced up, grouting around bath and rubber at base of screen need replaced, there were only 2 side plates, bedside lamps both really dusty, and of the 11 lights in the bathroom both wall lights and 3 ceiling lights were not working - these are a housekeeping issue and while we appreciate maybe one not working,5 out of 11 is not good. These are however all very easily fixed. We loved the furnishings (clearly done with love), the constant hot water & decent shower pressure, super comfy bed with great bedding, fantastic sized bath towels, loads of room in the bathroom for toiletries & undies, easy to operate washer/dryer, oodles of hooks to hang clothes and the peace and quiet we so enjoyed here after a pretty awful year and a half for everyone. There was a strong damp smell from the bathroom. Loose taps, light bulbs not working, no warning that the hot tap in the kitchen was instant boiling water and no safety mechanism which led to a scalding. Very little storage space, the few cupboards that there were were full of hair, dust and previous occupants muddy boots and clothes. Spent the first 3 hours of our stay trying to clean up with a vacuum cleaner that had no suction and was full of hair and dust before we even used it! Outside area was also a mess and unusable, covered in cobwebs and hair (cleaners had obviously shaken out rugs here and not swept up afterwards. Bin collection date was wrongly advised. Very concerned about the lack of cleanliness when the property should have been deep cleaned in line with government guidance regarding pandemic. Have rented holiday cottages before through Lakelovers and other companies, nothing compares to how bad this was. Will never book with Lakelovers ever again.

The facilities were ok for two people, and the parking permit was very handy in a number of car parks, not just Hawkshead. However, there were a couple of negatives: There is no mention in the description of the cottage about the very low doorways and beams. After a couple of days of walking bent over, and banging my head a few times, this became, quite literally, a pain. I am over 6 feet, but my wife, who is much smaller, also found this a problem. This is the main reason we would not go to Craftsman cottage again. The bins had not been emptied, which meant the black general waste bin smelt, and the recycling bin was overflowing. We took recycling to the bins in the public car park, and put the black bin out on our last day. The instructions in the cottage say to put the bins out on the collection day, but they are emptied very early and it would be better to ask people to put them out the night before.

About the location

HAWKSHEAD

Ambleside 5.1 miles; Kendal 17.4 miles.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.
