  • "We were thrilled when we arrived - we were already familiar with the general location - but so lovely to have the view over the river and the fell from both the living room and the bedroom."

Perfect location for walks from the door to Grassmere or Ambleside and getting on the bus to go further afield. Very comfortable bed and all we needed in the kitchen - plenty of room and feeling of light indoors - and beautiful grounds with great place to sit and eat outside in better weather. We plan to rebook.

  • "Overall the property was pleasant and well located with great views."

But some practical aspects were frustrating. Keen as we are to conserve water the shower was unusable because the water was so hot and difficult to control. So we were forced to have baths, where we could control the cold water for safety reasons. We suggest you turn down the temperature of the hot water on the boiler. We also found a lack of crockery and cutlery. The cups provided were either tiny or enormous! If you provided a bit more of the above there would be enough to run a full dishwasher. Instructions for how to use the hob would be really useful. We found it a total mystery and got it going after about 45 minutes trying! A simple, illustrated paragraph on a laminated sheet would have been so helpful. Coffee machine was another mystery but we couldn't be bothered with it - no instructions! I know it would probably be hard to get a bigger sofa into the property because of the doors but the sofa was very small and not very comfortable. Unfortunately there were a lot of clothes moths, but this may have been a seasonal thing. But the bed was very comfortable so we always got a good night's sleep.

  • "Not a bad place to stay."

Could do with a spring clean, cobwebs everywhere. Recycling confusing, description doesn't match availability. Sad to realise we had to bring our own teatowels( although it did say) pretty basic thing to expect. Generally at airbnb etc we would leave cooking oil and simple bits behind for the next guest. This was a bit like the Mary Celeste.?? Only one toilet roll. Good location.

Thank you for your feedback. We take all comments on board, as the property is self catering, items such as cooking oil are not always provided. Thank you The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

  • "Riverbank Cottage at Stepoung Stones is ideal for a quiet relaxing break in the heart of the lake district."

The location was the biggest draw for me and it was lovely not needing to use the car to get about and looking for a parking spot. At Riverbank you have ample parking at your doorstep and plenty of local walks around Rydal water and Loughrigg fell. I would highly recommend a stay at Riverbank Cottage at Stepping Stones. • "The property was grubby, items in the kitchen were covered in dust and grease , work top backs were dirty, small appliances had not been moved for months / years."

We had mice which were dealt with but there were mouse droppings in the kitchen cupboards which any decent cleaner would have spotted and dealt with. The secondary glazing had not been opened and cleaned in years which when you have stunning views to look at is distracting and disappointing. The skirting boards were thick with dust and cobwebs . There are even dog paw marks on the rug and the carpet and this is supposed to be a dog free accommodation! The fridge freezer also smelt bad and tainted ice cubes and food stored in the fridge part the shelfs had had never been lifted and cleaned on the support where they sit. When I first complained to Sykes about the mouse I also expected a cleaner would turn up to clean the mouse droppings but no they didn't. The cottage was perfect for walks and hikes straight from the door which is perfect for us and had the cottage been in a better state we would have paid to stay the following week as it was free. We would to come back but the standard of cleaning put us off.

  • "Cleanliness very poor for price of the cottage."

On arrival the dishwasher had not been emptied, there were multiple cobwebs, the secondary double glazing was full of dead flies and the magazine rack had scruffy magazines dating back to 2018.

  • "Beautiful location Fortunate with the weather and had a great week."

Walks and cycles from Riverbank are lovely. Enjoyed sitting on wee patio area chilling out and admiring the view. Access to Lake Rydal meant that we were able to enjoy a swim in the lake which was surprisingly warm. Our only negative comment is that we were surprised we had little control on heating and wondered if this would be a problem if we came when the weather was cooler [one evening felt a bit cold but could not get any heat as boiler is obviously on a timer]

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
