  • "This was our 4th stay at this lovely cottage but it is beginning to look tired."

Please could someone replace the lights in the kitchen and living room. But that said it’s clean and comfortable in a great location.

  • "Although I am listing the complaints I would like you to know it was a lovely cottage but 1, The whole place was tired looking 2."

There were spiders and large cobwebs everywhere. My daughter had to go around and clear them up and capture the spiders because my granddaughter is scared of spiders. 3. It told you about putting bins out for recycling etc. {a} There was nothing to tell you what days the bin lorry came. (b) It said to put the paper and cardboard into the white sack but there was no white sack anywhere to be found. 4.We were looking forward to having a meal at the pub (As described in the advert but unfortunately it closed in September, of course there was the Hotel but that was expensive. 5. Lights - There were 3 lights that didn't work in the kitchen, one of which just kept flashing on and off. One night the light near the fridge came on and then off again. One light in the living room was not working. The light on the Cooker Hood did not work. 6. Kitchen (a) Fridge door had a terrible squeak when opening it. (b) The Colander could not be used because it was rusty on the bottom. (c) The Toaster was dangerous, one of the knobs was missing and you could touch the electic wires within. (d) Two sets of kitchen weighing scales but neither of them worked. (e) No oven gloves (f) We had put some vegetables in one of the saucepans, it had heated up and when we took it of the hob the handle bent and my husband nearly had boiling water all down his front. (g) There were two frying pans to use but neither of them could be used because they were unfit for use. They looked terrible. 7. Dining area. Blinds at French doors were held together with cobwebs, plus they could not be opened up so you could see out the the window without the blinds in the way. 8. Lounge area. (a) TV remote was not working when we arrived, we had to put different batteries in, the old ones were corroded. (b) Although we had a smart TV we could not see TV at present time, (Normal tv in other words) We could only see Iplayer and the like. There was no little table. like a coffee table to put drinks or magazines on. So we had to be extra careful that we didn't knock anything over on the floor. 9. Twin bedroom It smelt a bit foisty when we arrived, and that was because it door would not stay open but when you wanted to shut it, it was hard to shut. Plus it was squeaky. There were no extra pillows anywhere which would have been handy. 10. Downstairs bathroom. (a) The extractor fan did not work but we were able to open the window. (b) The large cupboard in the basin unit made an awful noise when you opened it. Plus the Unit was never finished off properly, there were holes at the side of it. 11. Upstairs (a) Nowhere to put toothbrushes etc or the hang a towel while you washed or showered. (b) The Extractor fan in the bathroom was also not working and we could not open a window because the handle of the window was stuck fast. (c) The hot water tap on the basin moved around. 12. The Hot Water was very hot I think there should have been warning notices about it. 13. Once you had got water in the basin both upstairs and downstairs bathrooms it used to seep out, so that if you took to long the water would disappear. 14. And lastly, I don't know about you but I do not like showering in front of a window with no curtains or blinds. Neither bathroom had curtains or blinds.

  • "Beautiful cottage, spotlessly clean, friendly owner and a thoughtful welcome pack."

We really enjoyed our stay there. We did feel a little maintenance was needed, mainly the windows which were very hard to open. also the hot water runs extremely hot which could be a little dangerous. However nothing detracted from a really lovely week at The Smithy...even the unsettled weather!! Many thanks to the owner.

  • "The owner popped up as we were unpacking, a really lovely lady who was very welcoming."

The property was lovely, all clean and tidy and well appointed. The location was spectacular to access so many things in the nearby area, some beautiful countryside, easy access to lots of towns in Lancashire also. We really enjoyed the stay! (My one tiny recommendation would be some hooks on the backs of the doors to hang towels, but that wouldn't tarnish our stay at all) x

  • "The Smithy is a lovely property to holiday in."

Spacious and well equipped and well placed for the things we wanted to see. The beds were all very comfortable according to their users. We had a nice lunch in the local pub and breakfast at the village cafe. We would book this property again.

  • "The Smithy is a beautiful conversion property in a delightful village."

It has good access, safe off road parking, and a garden front and back. It’s a lovely building with lots of character and beautiful features. The property is generally well equipped and mostly comfortable. We would have liked to have had a coffee table in the sitting room, and better and more towels, with a hook or towel rail to hang them from. By midweek our two bath towels were smelly and wet, and there were no other bath towels provided. We slept in the upstairs bedroom and the mattress was rather lumpy and uncomfortable, so we slept on the duvet after the first night, and that helped. I can’t vouch for what the other beds are like. With a few small amendments, this could be the most perfect holiday home.

The house would be perfect with just one or two additions to the kitchen… a wooden spoon, ice cube tray, oven glove !!!

  • "The Smithy is a lovely cottage."

Spotlessly clean and welcoming. The cottage was decorated for Christmas which we hadn’t expected which was a nice surprise. We also received a very generous welcome pack which was much appreciated. The location is lovely very quiet and peaceful. We visit Lancashire at least four times a year and would definitely stay here again

The property

This quaint, stone-built cottage rests down a lovely side road close to the centre of Hurst Green, in the scenic county of Lancashire.

Well-equipped for a family getaway, The Smithy serves as a lovely base to explore Lancashire, including the beautiful Forest of Bowland AONB.

After a day of rambles, change out your walking attire into something more comfortable and retire to the sitting room, offering a plush corner sofa where you can snuggle up and browse the Smart TV.

Allow the designated chef to relish in the kitchen, appointed with all the necessary appliances for a short break, including a double oven, induction hob and fridge/freezer, while the dining table is where all can gather to taste the fruits of your labour.

As you start to yawn, retire to either of the three bedrooms, offering a double and twin on the ground floor, while upstairs provides a king-size with en-suite shower room, plus some charming village views.

Start your morning with a refreshing shower or savour a lazy soak in the evenings, both achievable within the ground-floor bathroom.

A charming patio garden offers a spot for some alfresco dining, or wander a restaurant in the village if you’d rather not cook.

There is also a rustic pub where you can sink a refreshing pint after wandering the surrounding country paths or riding the cycle routes.

Pendle Hill, Forest of Bowland and Longridge Fell are all close by with many points of interest to discover.

The Ribble Valley is famously a foodie area, boasting a Michelin starred restaurant, Northcote, along with many other great establishments.

Pick up some local produce at Clitheroe’s great mix of specialist shops, such as multi award-winning Byrnes Wines, Exchange Coffee and Cowmans Butchers and a growing number of quirky bars and pop-up restaurants.

Other attractions worth visiting include the Bowland Wild Boar Park, the scenic Whalley Arches and the National Trust owned property of Gawthorpe Hall, or how about a trip to the coast to enjoy the seaside attractions of Blackpool or Lytham St. Annes?

If adventure takes you further afield, for something different you can take a trip to the Yorkshire Dales or The Lake District, providing some of the country’s finest natural beauty.

The Smithy is a sumptuous base to return to each evening.

About the location

HURST GREEN

Stonyhurst 1.3 miles; Ribchester 3.6 miles; Clitheroe 5.3 miles.

Hurst Green is a small village in the Ribble Valley district of Lancashire, England, connected in its history to the Jesuit school, Stonyhurst College. The village is 5 miles (8 km) from Longridge and 4 miles (6 km) from Clitheroe, and is close to the River Ribble, near its junction with the River Hodder. Many areas in the UK claim to have inspired J.R.R Tolkien's creation of middle earth but the author certainly spent a lot of his time at Stonyhurst College working on The Lord of the Rings during the Second World War. Many have found connections with this landscape around the college and the 5.5 mile Tolkien Trail explores the Ribble Valley that may have inspired him. Walk in the footsteps of author J.R.R. Tolkien who regularly stayed at Stonyhurst College in the Ribble Valley. J.R.R. Tolkien was renowned for his love of nature and wooded landscapes and the countryside around Stonyhurst is richly beautiful. A number of names which occur in 'The Lord of The Rings' are similar to those found locally including Shire Lane (in Hurst Green) and River Shirebourn.
