  • "Fabulous cottage that had everything and more besides."

Well equiped with plenty of crockery , cutlery and glassware. Very clean and comfortable with plenty of room for 6 guests. The kitchen is beautiful and spacious. Having 2 lounges was perfect for those who wanted to watch TV and those who didn't. Nice back garden although we were there over New Year so didn't get to use it. The village is very pretty with loads of walks from the doorstep. A pub dead opposite was welcoming and served great meals. Very friendly village. We can't wait to return, thank you to the owners and Sykes Cottages for making the booking easy and an enjoyable break.

Many thanks for the lovely comments. It is always a great compliment when visitors can wait to return. We would love to welcome you back. Property Owner

  • "Carwood is an example of how a period building can be successfully modernised; the traditional exterior disguises a wonderful use of interior space."

The whole is arranged so as to provide ample opportunity for visitors to either come together as a group or to enjoy more private space, should someone want to watch TV whilst others prefer to sit around a cosy log burner, chatting or to read. And then there is the spacious garden which provides a wonderful green backcloth to breakfasts. Plentiful hot water and warm bathrooms means that returning from the hills on a cold wet day is a delight. Highly recommended.

  • "Taking a house for a longer holiday has been a new experience for us, and I hoped that Carwood would be sufficiently comfortable to make us feel at home."

I needn’t have worried, it’s a lovely cottage in one of our favourite locations, and felt like home away from home. The kitchen-diner is beautifully appointed, with underfloor heating (which our dog loved), plenty of cupboard space and a large fridge-freezer. Being Nov/Dec we didn’t sit in the garden but it catches the afternoon sun and would be a great place to sit with a drink in the evening. Having The Stag Inn just across the green, plus being on the Pennine Way and close to Appleby and Penrith makes this a perfect getaway whether for a weekend or, as we discovered, a month. I recommend Carwood without reservation.

It has a good sized garden backing onto a wooded area which would be ideal for summer conditions. The is ample parking for one car off road. The owners were very helpful and provided all the information needed (& more). We would certainly recommend the property as it represents excellent value for money. The pub on the opposite side of the road was superb - excellent beers and food at very reasonable prices. The Post Office/store, about 50 yards away, does not open in winter, despite what the website said (as at the time of writing this) so the nearest shops are in Appleby about 3 miles away. Dufton is an excellent base for walking.

The kitchen was my favourite, so spacious and a pleasure to cook for the family in. We went away with in-laws and friends and the cottage had ample space so we didn't get in each others way. The bed set up was brilliant for us and the use of three bathrooms was great. The location was fantastic also with the pub over the road and the pennine way on the doorstep. Very clean with excellent facilities. Bathrooms really nice and the showers had a great pressure with plenty of hot water. Beds comfy and plenty of storage etc. A lovely living room with a great wood burning stove. Very cosy. Cottage in a good position with a good pub directly opposite which serves evening meals. Lots of circular walks directly from the village. The only slight negative was the lack of a decent non stick frying pan. The ones in the kitchen were terrible. The kitchen itself was superb with a lovely dinning area overlooking the garden. Would definitely use the cottage again for a short break.

Dufton is a lovely little village very quiet, beautiful walks round about, the villagers were very friendly. We had a meal at the Stag Inn which was pleasant. We went to close by Appleby and only a short drive to Pooley Bridge which was a lovely little place at the end of Ullswater. We hired a self drive boat well worth the money. • "Carwood is an exceptional cottage in so many ways!"

We spent a wonderful week in Dufton, using Carwood as our base to explore on foot around the village, around the perimeter via the forest walk and even up to Dufton Pike. Furthermore, it is only a short drift away from Appleby, Penrith and Keswick all in the knowledge that we could return to the cozy, immaculately presented and welcoming environment of Carwood when the cold nights of winter drew in!. Jon and Judy have clearly gone to extraordinary lengths in the refurbishment of the property and it was a joy to wake up to underfloor heating, have breakfast in the stunning kitchen before venturing out for the day, then returning home to the magnificent log burner and the warmth it brought with it. Even when the TV didn't work, Jon made arrangements for a replacement and posted the TV remote so that it could be used! My family and I had a wonderful time and that is testament to Jon and Judy's excellent hospitality. Thank you!

About the location

DUFTON

Appleby-in-Westmorland 3 miles; Penrith 13 miles.

The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Dufton is situated in the North Pennines AONB. It is a perfect base for walkers and cyclists. There are many scenic walks from the village; try climbing Dufton Pike, or follow the Pennine Way up a spectacular glacial valley to High Cup Nick. It is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District and Eden Valley. The village has a pub, which serves good food, an Agricultural Show held on the last Saturday in August, and is just three miles from the historic town of Appleby. At the heart of the lush Eden Valley, Appleby-in-Westmorland is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain; still today, many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With both the magnificent Lake District and newly expanded Yorkshire Dales National Parks within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
