  • "A lovely little cottage set in the small village of St."

John's Chapel. We had an excellent 4 night stay at Grace Cottage, our party of 3 adults and two dogs had ample room in this well present property. The cottage itself has gas central heating in its two bedrooms and bathroom upstairs as well as cosy sitting room with wi-fi, t.v. with Netflix and log burner and well equipped kitchen downstairs. There's also as small yard to the rear with views of the surrounding Pennine hills. This is an excellent choice if you want a relaxing getaway with your family or friends with local walks and scenery, a couple of local village pubs, cafe, well stocked local store and craft shop. Further away are the delights of Durham and Barnard Castle these are around 40 minutes away by car. Carparking is the only thing that the property doesn't offer as carparking is on the road outside the front of Grace Cottage. Overall the property is well presented in a great location with local amenities, we will hopefully in the future be returning for a further stay. We highly recommend a visit.

  • "Initially annoyed, not realising the first photo on the advert is the village pub and not the cottage."

Having booked then the advert allows you to see the front of the property. Once we arrived and got inside the cottage it was lovely, but it did smell a bit stail, however once we got the windows open and some air freshener sprayed it was fine. I did read some of the comments in the visitors book remarking about dog owners needing to be responsible for there dogs going upstairs which i totally agree with, as an owner of 2 dogs which we had with us i found the stair gate in the cupboard upstairs and fitted it at the bottom of the stairs which obviously stopped that problem and i think should be left in position. We were very lucky with the weather and only had a couple of heavy showers where we had to deal with the dogs being wet. However it was very awkward to try and get them dried at the back door and not trailing wet all over the kitchen floor, i think a good addition to the cottage would be a lean to type gazebo with a clear plasic roof which would still allow light into the kitchen and some where dry to stand to dry the dogs and even remove your walking boots. Otherwise a great place to stay in a lovely location. Also be advised it is on road parking. On a reasonably busy road at times, and your not guaranteed to be able to park outside the property.

An extremely well equipped kitchen, the only thing missing is a cheese grater and a mop and bucket. Smelt quite doggy and dank on entry and furnishings quite hairy. Wouldn’t stop us returning we had a fantastic holiday.

  • "We thought the cottage was lovely."

We were disappointed to arrive on a chilly February afternoon to find no kindling nor firefighters and only a couple of logs. In addition the cottage was very cold at 10 degrees. (Co-op had no stock either of kindling) We had understood from the description that at least the initial stock of wood was provided else we could have brought our own. Fortunately, the cottage’s central heating was working well although we didn’t understand why it came on at 4am? Overall the cottage, once warm, was extremely comfortable. Outside, we feel that the front needs a light as the steps in from the gate are shallow and impossible to see in the dark. The bath and hand towels in the main bedroom had a musty, stored when damp smell. We loved the views out back and thought the cottage was prettily decorated. It was great to have decent sized mugs and a teapot (but no tea cosy)and enough pans/ crockery to be able to cook properly. The neighbours were friendly, as were everyone we met in the village. We had an enjoyable walk along the stream at the back and a good time in The Blue Bell , taking part in the Sunday night quiz. We’d have no hesitation in staying in Grace Cottage again.

  • "Location is great, views from the garden superb."

Grace cottage is a lovely cottage and had everything we needed for a short stay. You can see a lot of time and effort has gone into the cottage but unfortunately for us it wasn't of a good standard for cleanliness. The cottage in our opinion needs a a little loving care and a good once over. The kitchen was dusty, the light above the kitchen table had months of dust which isn't the best, the rubbish bin dirty, pans had been put back in the cupboard and not been washed, freezer needed defrosting and the old bags of ice removing. Living area was comfortable but again needed a little loving care, dead spiders, cobwebs, dust and unfortunately for us the whole stay we had a work van parked outside which blocked the sun, this can't be helped and is no way the owners fault but it was a little annoying. Bathroom again needed a clean, window sills dusty and a lot of dead flies which were there when we arrived, the toilet was also leaking which wasn't great. We had a plumber turn up part way through our stay to fix the leak as he believed the property was vacant and no one was staying. Not ideal as I think it's something that should have been sorted prior to us arriving. Again this could be due to the lack of availability for tradesmen to fix but surely as paying guests we could have been given a heads up. Bedroom was beautifully decorated but again dusty and in need of attention, picture rails I could right my name on in the dust, blind at the back of the bed didn't work. Bed was lovely and comfy though and we did sleep well. You can see this cottage has once been a stunning place but it really could do with a good clean.

Thankyou for your feedback, which I have taken very seriously. Our cottage is indeed very loved, however I have not been able to get there for some time now and had no idea things had slipped. I have arranged for a deep clean and inventory check. Thankyou for bringing this to my attention. Property Owner

The neighbour advised us that glass bottles go into a box and not the 'wheelie bin' labelled glass bottles. The above was no problem and everything else was absolutely perfect. The location is really nice with two really good pubs in the village. Would definitely recommend.

the welcome pack was a nice touch and overall our stay was great. two great but different pubs and local Co-op within walking distance, if you get a chance book it.

Although, on arrival we noticed that the handle for the window in the master bedroom had been broken off. Also, none of the windows in the cottage, apart from the bathroom would open. Also, the back garden patio area was full of weeds. Apart from these two things we had a fantastic stay. The cottage has exellent views of the surrounding countryside. And the area has so many places to go walking/ exploring. There are two local pubs that serve lovely food. We would definitely go back.

Very comfortable and homely and everything was supplied that we needed. However I wasn't aware this house was on a main road where parking was difficult. However this didn't spoil our time here as the neighbours were helpful and friendly and came out and moved their cars to enable us to park outside and not way down the road. Would definitely return when we can explore the area more and go in restaurants, cafes, visitor centres etc.
