  • "Had a lovely week away with family."

Nice to have Mark and Allyson (owners) next door to us along with their 3 lovely dogs. Such a spacious cottage which is so much bigger than looks on website. Spotlessly clean. The view from the gardens front and back are stunning. Mark and Allyson catered for all needs. Including a lovely welcome gift on arrival. Our 4 year old grandson has renamed the snug the boys room and was so upset when our holiday came to an end. This cottage is a credit to you both. We highly recommend. It is in a perfect location for walking or jumping in car to explore. We had two large cars and had no problem with parking whatsoever. Hope to see you soon.

We received a very warm welcome and Allyson was always available to answer any questions. The views are stunning, the kitchen very well equipped, and the whole cottage was spotless. A particularly warm welcome for my son’s dog , who was completely safe in the enclosed garden. Wonderful walking not too far away, with friendly pubs for lunch. Shame the weather wasn’t amazing, but comfortable sofas to sit and read on. A real find, and we hope to be back.

The broadband was good enough to allow our daughter to work from there for a couple of days and the mobile signal is also good. The TV is a good size for the living room and we were able to use an iPad adaptor to stream Netflix etc. although this worked best if we downloaded programmes first. The garden is very secure for dogs and the gate at the bottom of the stairs makes it easy to prevent them getting to the bedrooms. The beds were comfortable and the whole property was very clean. The welcome treats for us and the dogs were very much appreciated. The location of the property meant that we could go walking In the Eden valley, Yorkshire Dales, County Durham and the Lake District - all within a week. We hope to return soon.

  • "Lovely week away We were looking for a remote dog friendly cottage and we found possibly the best cottage we have ever stayed in."

Allyson met us on arrival and armed with 20 questions for her, we found the best places to eat, shop, local walk for the boys (2 x Westies) She is a mind of info and well worth spending half an hour in her company. The Cottage is so beautifully decorated and equipped. Though there was only the 2 of us and we used very little in the way of kitchen equipment and rooms, there is so much the property has to offer. Great doggie wet room.....for rubbing down wet paws after a days walk in The Pennines or The Lakes. Washing machine. Spare towels. Cupboard fully stocked with every game you can think of to while away a wet dull afternoon. Welcome gifts for two and four legged guests....amazing cake and bottle of shiraz and tin of doggie treats, Allyson thinks of everything to welcome you to their cottage. The Snug...a small 1 seated room to sit and look out at the view is a must. My treat every morning with a coffee. Archie our puppy loved the view also albeit the local sheep was his interest! The garden has 2 areas with the bottom being fully enclosed even for the most inquisitive Westie! It would of been lovely to seen the garden at it's best mid summer with all of the plants, shrubs and containers in full bloom. But unfortunately October weather took the best out of the blooms. Fully equipped kitchen, Allyson has thought of everything. 6 seater dining table. Dishwasher. Fridge freezer. Microwave. Guest Information book and pamphlets on local visitor sites. Take time to read Guest Information book. It gives you everything you need to know on the property and the local area. A stair gate at the bottom of the stairs kept the boys downstairs at night, usually they sleep in our room and it's in the House Rules no dogs on beds. We are in someone else's home and respect their wishes. Excellent addition. Other dog friendly properties need to adopt. 3 x bedrooms and as I mentioned only the 2 of us so we only used the king size room. Very comfortable and tastefully decorated as were the other 2. Bathroom also well decorated with over bath shower, ample hot water. Living room saw a woodburner fully stocked ready to fire up and plenty of coal sticks and wood if needed. The Cottage is located in a no through road hamlet containing about a dozen other homes. Horses and sheep are your neighbours with plenty of rabbits on their walk to send the boys into a frenzy! Parking for 1 and advise to park tight to the wall. All in all, this is by far the best cottage we have stayed in with Allyson and Mark always ready for a chat over the fence. Would we recommend? I think my review says it all.

The standard of the accommodation was outstanding; comfy, clean and decorated to a high standard. The garden is beautiful and fully enclosed which was reassuring for our dogs. All rooms are an excellent size, and the snug was a favourite to look out on the beautiful views of the Pennines. The location was spot on, with easy access to the Pennines, Lake District or Yorkshire Dales. The owners were really welcoming and on hand for anything we needed, they gave great advice for walks, parking etc and the wide range of locations accessible from the cottage. The owners are very dog friendly and the layout of the cottage is equally so, as you can go straight through the kitchen and into a boot room to clean the dogs if needed. The kitchen is very spacious and the living room is really comfy with a wood burning stove when needed; not that you will need it much due to the 3ft thick walls and central heating. All the bedrooms are very spacious and light, and the decor is very modern but the cottage still has that traditional feel to it. There is a lovely peaceful garden at the front to watch the scenery and horses in the field opposite, but there is a large fully enclosed garden at the rear to let the dogs sunbathe and wander. I have two large greyhounds so they need decent sized walls to discourage them from any thoughts of escape and I was very pleased with the rear garden as the dogs had no means of escape. You get enough fuel for the living room stove for a couple of nights and the owners top it up for a very reasonable £4.00. There is even a quiet reading room off the kitchen with a picture window overlooking the field at the back for a bit of peace and quiet from everyone else if needed. Overall a fantastic place to stay for us and the dogs.

Nothing was too much trouble, yet they didn't bother us at all despite being next door. There were some lovely local walks from the door which was not mentioned in the description.

We were made to feel very welcome and relaxed from the moment we stepped in. It is decorated and furnished beautifully and has everything you would need. Comfy living room, nice kitchen, gorgeous bedrooms and bathroom. Even has a little 'snug' where you can sit and read with a nice view. Separate large utility room is very useful and the large garden with seating is very nice and good for the children to play.

Everything we needed was catered for, including for the dog, which is rare and really appreciated. About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
