  • "Absolutely fantastic."

Location is amazing. Very peaceful. Scenic walks in every direction, and only a short drive to Alston. Cottage was very clean and had everything we needed and more for the perfect stay. Owners very friendly and helpful when I needed to contact them for some advice. Would return without hesitation.

  • "The Barn is the place to be in a heatwave."

The ground floor is tiled which ensures a good nights sleep as the room is cool. In the day time of the heatwave the bedroom was the place to retreat to to keep cool! The only neighbours were the sheep and the silence was wonderful. The local people were also so friendly and the "Spar" shop in Alston is a delight, we recommend the cream cakes and butchers. We enjoyed walking our dog and he was happy to run free at the Derwent Reservoir Dog Field. In return he let us visit Beamish on a cooler day. A real get away from it holiday, thank you .

Wonderful to look out of the windows and see wildlife in the fields e.g hares and curlew. Much to explore locally e.g walking, visit to the lead & zinc mine in Nenthead. Will definitely stay again.

Good to have a full sized fridge freezer as we took all of our food with us. The only slight complaint was that the sofa could have been a bit more comfortable but all in all a good place to stay.

  • "2nd visit - just as wonderful as the 1st."

Beautiful, peaceful location. Immaculately clean and well equipped, characterful property. Stairs are steep and narrow but sturdy rope bannister on one side and thoughtfully positioned handles plus posts to hold onto on the other side. Good water pressure and consistent hot water temperature for showering. Internet connection excellent considering rural location - only occasionally lost it but quickly reconnected. Can’t praise Field Barn enough - an absolute gem.

  • "We had a very relaxing stay at Field Barn, the accommodation was excellent it was so clean and all credit should be given to the cleaners."

The views were brilliant and the sheep and lambs in the field were so close to us. My dog spent ages just watching the lambs playing . There was a pub 20 minutes walk away that served food and allowed dogs. We would definitely think of going back .

  • "The Field Barn was ideal as we wanted remote, however the stairs were very tight and not very safe for the older person, the hand rail did not give much confidence, either going up or down, the internet kept going off, having to re_connect with the router each time."

The tv kept breaking up, making it hard to watch. The shower is not very strong, and the bathroom is cold, compared to the rest of the barn. With such a fabulous views there is no seating outside to sit with a cuppa,or a evening glass of wine .

  • "Absolutely brilliant in every way."

Accurate pictures and information, apart from the picnic table (missing) which would have been lovely to use in the sunshine. Spotlessly clean. Tasteful and sturdy furniture. Plenty of wardrobe space. Nicely decorated. Well equipped and lots of thoughtful touches. Comfy bed. Easy to use heating and microwave. Amazing location - beautiful views, so peaceful and quiet, very private. I split my holiday between studying and walking - brilliant for both activities. Sheep and pit ponies in surrounding fields for company. Owner helpful/ responsive/ friendly when there was power cut one afternoon and when there was strange banging noise (turned out to be lounge heater, but was only on first night which was cold). Tons of walks on the doorstep. Broadband better than expected - sometimes iffy during day but perfect at night. Loved it so much, have booked to go back twice again this year! 100/10. Thank you!

It is remote and high up so I'm glad we had a bigger car, but easy to find and still near areas to walk. The views were insane and we loved being surrounded by the sheep and watching them feed just outside our window. The barn had all the home comforts and necessities you would need, was nice and warm, WiFi was good as was the TV signal if that's important to you. It was so quiet and peaceful, just the break we needed!

  • "My only criticism of this otherwise excellent cottage is that it was not possible to open windows because the place was immediately invaded by many flies."

It may have been due to the unusually warm weather, or possibly because sheep (the same culprits each day) had adopted the area immediately outside the cottage as a rest area (and loo!). I appreciate that flies are part of life in a farming area, but maybe an “insectocutor” would help. OTOH, to be fair, the fly problem wasn’t as noticeable during the first couple of (cooler) days of my holiday.

  • "We had a lovely, peaceful stay at Field Barn."

The accommodation was very clean and comfortable and the views and surroundings were beautiful. Our only suggestions for improvement would be to provide a good set of chopping knives, and also blackout blinds or blackout lining for the curtains in the bedroom. We were there over the summer solstice and it was light at about 4am! I'd highly recommend a stay at Field Barn if you want a quiet, relaxing break away from it all!

  • "We absolutely loved our stay at Field Barn."

The views were stunning and the barn itself was so cosy. The owners really have paid attention to the little touches to make our stay as comfortable as possible, from the coffee machine to the george foreman grill. We couldn't fault the cleanliness of the barn, there wasn't a spec of dust in sight! The location is so remote, and was ideal for us as we have an anxious dog who is uncomfortable in busy areas. It was so quiet that we didn't see another soul our whole stay! I would definitely recommend it as a place to switch off, relax and unwind, and the nearby walks are perfect for exercising an energetic border collie. We will definitely be back!!!

  • "Amazing location in the middle of nowhere at the end of a Rd up in the Pennines."

A farm 100 metres away, but otherwise it's sheep, Hills and wind. The field barn is more of a small tower. Upstairs is the open plan living area with a reasonable kitchen, comfortable furniture and large TV with Netflix. Candles and even a few pods for the coffee machine provided. Down stairs is a modern bathroom with simple Mira shower. The bed was comfortable with a rocking chair and plenty of wardrobe storage. Everything was fresh, clean and new , and well chosen. There were lots of ornaments and perhaps better quality John Lewis crockery etc than one might expect. Covid precautions all in place. Electric heaters were plenty to keep this place snug despite the incessant wind. Patio doors lead out to a small stone patio wraps around two sides. Sit at the picnic bench and watch the sun go down. Plenty of gravel parking, enough for a lorry. Remember, this is very rural, so access to the property is a long winding rough single track, road. Owner suggests arriving in daylight, but it wasn't hard to find, just have to be patient when driving slowly up the long winding track. Plenty of Walks up into the Hills or down into the Valley from here. Walking to Alstom takes perhaps 90 minutes, driving perhaps 10. Overall, if you want solitude or walking or raw nature, this is ideal. Can't think of anything negative to say to be honest. Was woken early one morning by a big grey sheep eating the picnic table loudly!

It was lovely and clean and everything, including the bed sheets, smelled amazing. The views from every window were stunning and we woke the first morning to cute bunnies in the fields around us. There are lots of stunning walks on your doorstep which was just what we wanted and then we could retreat to the tranquility of Field Barn. About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
