  • "Great location, lovely cosy cottage, really enjoyed our week there"

  • "Firstly there was no essential welcome pack very disappointing."

Always receive one of these wherever I’ve stayed. I think there should be clear step by step instructions within in a manual directive to assist holiday makers on how to operate items within the property, ie microwave, cooker, living room fire (which became needed urgently as there was no central heating one day and it was unbelievably cold ) .As there was no such clear manual the owner had to be contacted on more than one occasion which is not ideal . TV could do with upgrading allowing holidaymakers more viewing choice. I’m unable to score high for cleanliness as I found a spider in the kitchen cupboard in one of the dishes. Also issues outside the back area, gate to steps, which lead to where cars come and go, broken and off its hinges and lay on its side, therefore security for my little dog was compromised. All in all, I was disappointed with the chosen property, and although it may look appealing, the upstairs /downstairs thing didn’t work for me at all. On a positive note the bed was comfy and jacuzzi bath was welcoming and relaxing.

  • "Very friendly owners, lovely welcome with scones& jam, very clean & tidy property."

On the day of arrival Steve had the heating on for us and it nice & cosy. The Bothy had everything that you were likely to require during your stay. Lovely property perched on a quiet road, ideal for taking the dog out a walk in the morning & evening. One very small niggle was the rather tight turn to drive in through the stone pillars, beware if you have a large vehicle. Saying that, I got used to it by the end of the week. If you love walking and sightseeing this is the ideal spot for a holiday. The nearest town, Alston, had all the amenities you require and is only a short drive away. One disappointment is that a few cafes in the area do not accept dogs, The Nook and the Station cafe were 2 such cases. Overall it was a lovely holiday and hopefully get back again in the future.

  • "A really lovely place to stay if you want beautiful scenery, to be surrounded by nature, relaxation, peace & tranquility."

The walking trails are in abundance. Area is remote, so take plenty of supplies with you. Nearest village is a short drive away. I did find not many local shops/bars/restaurants/cafe open, odd opening times too for a holiday season, may have something to do with the recent pandemic perhaps? Hosts were lovely souls that made you very welcome & on hand close by if you needed them for anything. I would say the cottage was more of a 3/4 star in rating. Although well equipped with a beautiful bathroom, it could do with updating. New mattress reqiured for the bed is a must. On the whole one can't complain at all, as one has come back absolutely relaxed including dog!

  • "We stayed at the Bothy - a real gem of the cottage."

Stephen and Sandra have modernised it to the highest standard. Unlike many holiday cottages we stayed at in the past, there is nothing shabby about the Bothy - the furniture, the equipment, the decoration are of the high quality. After a day of cycling or hiking, we spent some amazing evenings by the fireplace. My wife simply loved the jacuzzi. The bed was super comfortable too. We both look forward to coming back to the Bothy in the future.

The Bothy is in stunning surroundings in the middle of nowhere. Great for walks, but if the weather is not good it is the perfect place to just sit and read. We loved it and would certainly recommend staying at The Bothy again. Steve and Sandra are really helpful, but also not intrusive.

Greenends, a Cumbrian longhouse estate offers three holiday cottages in a stunning hillside setting, in the heart of the beautiful Roof of England countryside, four miles from the town of Alston. These charming cottages are located in peaceful surroundings with stunning views over the Nent Valley, on what was once the estate of the Walton’s, the leading mining family of the area in the 1800s. These delightful Alston cottages are renovated to a high standard, individually styled to retain character and charm. Keepers boasts a lovely sun room, perfect for a couple to enjoy the spectacular views on offer, whilst Bothy is a romantic hideaway, which has a large bedroom and bathroom, open stonework and a private patio, and Chestnut is ideal for groups of four with an open plan living area, two en-suite bedrooms and a wrap around balcony with views over the valley. Thoughtfully positioned for privacy, each of the cottages has outdoor seating, a barbecue area and access to the adjacent gardens and fields, as well as the opportunity to walk from the doorstep onto the surrounding moorland. The resident alpacas and other wildlife ensure that there is plenty of outdoor activity to keep an eye on and the dark skies offer fantastic star gazing opportunities. The Isaac’s Tea Trial crosses the estate, providing a wonderful 36 mile circular walk for the more adventurous walker. The owners are happy to break the trail into bite sized chunks with lifts and drop off points. The nearby Cumbrian market town of Alston, the highest in Britain, has a selection of traditional pubs and a variety of shops, as well as local attractions including the South Tynedale Railway, Epiacum and Nenthead and Killhope mines on the doorstep. With plenty of places to visit within an hour’s drive, including Hadrian’s Wall, Hexham, Beamish Open Air Museum, Durham Cathedral and the Lake District, this is a superb group of Alston holiday cottages for a relaxing break in the North Pennines.

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
