From arriving at the cottage we were made very welcome Dick showed us around the cottage which was immaculate there was a welcome pack with freshly baked cake bread homemade jam butter milk tea coffee and sugar wich were all very nice the cottage had everything you needed and more they have really thought of everything it was very comfortable and warm everything was perfect I would definitely recommend to anyone and will definitely be back sometime over the years we have stayed in a lot of cottages and I can honestly say this is either one of the best or possibly the best we’ve stayed in hopefully next time weather will be better Thank you
"Everything was as described."
Very nice, clean, tidy. No complaints about the cottage and great drive out around beautiful countryside and villages. I would highly recommend to anyone.
"We had a lovely stay."
A clean, comfortable cottage with good amenities. Friendly, welcoming owners and we appreciated a lovely welcome pack and provision of wood for the fire. We enjoyed the location with walks and great countryside views. The owners provided a lot of information about the local area which was most helpful. Overall a very relaxing week for us.
"We had a wonderful stay at Middlefell Cottage, a gorgeous barn conversion."
Beautifully done out with ample room and everything you need for a quiet stay in the country. The owners were lovely and informative of the area and there were farm animals to enjoy as well as a beautiful view. A stones throw from Alston which had lovely boutique shops to explore as well as a railway station which also provides a lovely walk alongside the rails. Would highly reccommend this cottage to anyone wanting to getaway from it all, relax and spend some time rejuvenating in the English countryside.
"Really lovely cottage in a beautiful location, perfectly situated to explore different areas of the region."
Every home comfort was catered for at the cottage and the welcome hamper was a lovely touch, especially after a long journey. Thanks Dick and Diane for a very comfortable stay!
"We had a lovely stay in this well equipped and comfortable barn conversion in a very beautiful part of Cumbria."
It provided an ideal base for travelling around. The owners provided a very welcome basket of homemade bread cake and jam and other items.
"Absolutely lovely stay here, from greeting to check out, such a lovely couple and a lovely, clean, well equipped cottage- complete with an excellent welcome basket!"
! Can’t recommend this place highly enough- the only tip I can give you is to pack your full length wellies to be able to go down the Killhope Lead Mines and currently it’s free (but sadly they don’t hire out wellies). Great days out within a short drive away as well as plenty of interesting walks on the doorstep. Trips to Hadrians Wall and Barnard Castle recommended and the Alston House Hotel serve excellent dishes, would recommend to everyone. Plenty more still to do in the area, would happily stay here again.
"Fantastic cottage ,spotlessly clean and containing everything you could need."
Comfy beds and furnishings . Light and airy rooms .Well equiped kitchen . Situated in the beautiful cumbrian countryside , we saw loads of wild birds including a barn owl , curlews ,oyster catchers and snipe plus loads of others i dont know the names of . Dick and Diane live next door and were perfect hosts including leaving a lovely welcome pack .we had such a wonderful time we didnt want to come home .probably the best cottage we have stayed in .
"Loverly clean gorgeous cottage would highly recommend"
"Thank you for a lovely stay."
Great hosts living next door. Lovely welcome basket with homemade bread, cake and jam. Views great. Sleeping arrangements flexible with zip and link beds upstairs. Area in great scenery of fells and valleys .
"Middlefell View Cottage is definitely one of the best Sykes holiday homes that we have experienced over many years of using the company."
Location, cleanliness, warmth, comfort and especially the owners are what make this cottage so enjoyable. If there is a drawback it is worth noting that there are a lot of steps; up to two of the bedrooms and from there down to the bathroom. But for two people there is a lovely double bedroom downstairs and a shower room for less able holiday makers.
"Lovely cottage with everything we needed."
Fantastic welcome pack full of goodies, the cake was the best. We take our bikes on holiday and this cottage was listed as having lockable bike storage, however, the out-house we were given did not have a lock so we had to supply our own lock to keep our bikes safe. Disappointing.
Tracey, we're sorry the lack of a lock spoiled your stay with us - had you asked, we would have supplied one though it has to be said, that due to our location, the likelihood of theft is very low. Property Owner
"Absolutely fantastic so welcoming."
Great to have weather updated prior to travel made the journey much easier. Welcome basket a lovely touch the bread and cake was amazing. Thank you.
"A lovely cottage in a great location."
Amazing welcome pack. Hosts very helpful. Great to be able to buy home produce and wood for the fire.
"This is a wonderful place, in a great area with lots to do."
The hosts are fantastic and go that extra mile to see to all your needs. The cottage is amazing and well equipped, lots of room and comfy beds.
"Had a very memorable stay."
The host was very friendly and attentive to all our needs. All of our family including the children loved the place. Great location. Many thanjs to the owner for making us feel so welcome and comfortable. Will definitely be visiting again and will recommend to friends, family and colleagues. Overall, everything exceeded our expectations and owner and wife were excellent hosts.
"This is a beautiful cottage, homely and spotlessly clean."
The underfloor heating meant it was always warm. The owners made me feel very welcome but they were not in any way intrusive. The welcome pack was the best I’ve ever had in any holiday cottage. I wouldn’t hesitate to return here or to recommend it. It’s a cottage with a real heart. Thank you. Hazel
"The cottage was extremely comfortable with a modern layout."
All the facilities & more were available with a lovely welcome pact. I would certainly stay there again.
"Lovely property in good location for exploring the area ."
Friendly owners on site and nice touches such the welcome pack and updated and extensive information folder which other owners seem to have abandoned using Covid as an excuse . Great beer and hearty well priced food at the Cumberland Inn in Alston .
"The owners made us very welcome,a lovely basket of goodies on arrival,& we had some of their home made natural honey & lamb chops which was all lovely."
The views from the cottage was outstanding .we came up to get away from a tragic personal bereavement loss & its helped us a lot as everywhere we drove was just breathtaking...we will definitely be back to the cottage too its so clean, peaceful,& very well maintained thank you.
"A warm comfortable cottage in a beautiful location."
There are many thoughtful extras provided by the owners including a hamper of delicious home made food on arrival. The friendly owners are on site if you need them. The cottage is surrounded by stunning scenery for walking holidays, but is also within easy reach of Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, the Lake District and the beautiful dales.
"We had such an awesome time here, thank you for your hospitality!"
"What can I say this place is a credit to the owners who are wonderful , the cottage itself was outstanding everything you could wish for and more the pictures don’t do it justice you have to go to appreciate the place we had a fabulous stay and will be definitely going back ."
Thankyou for a perfect Christmas
"This is a beautiful cottage, fully equipped with everything you need a home from home!"
Wonderful hosts can’t do enough for you, the extra basket of goodies with milk, bread, homemade cake, bread perfectly. Let’s not forget the animals, we had a lovely week and can’t highly recommend we will be back!!!
"Cottage was to the highest standards, and owners were very helpful, could not fault anything."
"We were hugely impressed with the investment and effort that the owners of the cottage went to in order to keep safe during the pandemic."
They had thought out everything- from putting dishes and all cutlery, even if already clean, through dishwasher, ready to unload by ourselves upon arrival; to leaving us a supply of sanitiser and wipes; to carefully decontaminating fully between guests. We had concerns about holidaying during these difficult times, and our minds were put at ease once we realised how seriously the hosts took our safety. Thank you, Dick and Diane! On top of this the house is clean, tidy and very comfortable. The kitchen was well appointed and we made full use of it as we decided to cook in rather than eat out, the beds were comfortable as was the lounge area. We enjoyed sharing the farm with the wandering turkeys and chickens, and other well-treated farm animals such as pigs and sheep. We were left a lovely basket upon arrival of fresh bread, home-made jam, butter, cake, tea, coffee with milk in the fridge. It was very welcome and kind. We were able to access some fabulous walks in the North Pennines, all within a 30 minute drive, and we barely scratched the surface. Can recommend Ashgill Force and High/Low force walks, and there were many more we didn't have time to experience. We would love to come back and do more and can highly recommend the cottage
"The cottage was beautiful, clean and well equipped."
Our hosts were extremely helpful and generous. We had a great time
"A wonderful, fully equipped cottage, in a stunning location."
The beds are incredibly comfortable
"Dick and Diane are a lovely, friendly couple."
We had a welcome hamper on arrival, containing, amongst other things a fantastic home baked Christmas cake (we were there over the Christmas period) and were impressed with the level of thought and attention to detail in all areas even down to providing towels for our dogs! The cottage itself way exceeded expectations, it was clean, comfortable and well laid out with all mod cons and everything necessary to make it a home from home.
"Great house and location owners so helpful and understanding when we arrived with an extra dog at last minute"
"Very considerate and helpful owners."
Very pleasant welcome along with welcome basket of goodies. Well equipped cottage.Very comfortable beds. good location for Hadrian's Wall and Housestead Fort.
"An absolutely lovely place to stay, especially as a base to tour the lakes without being in the busy tourist spots."
Our hosts were spot on and we really appreciated the welcome hamper, especially the homemade cake! Highly recommend Middlefell View cottage as a pleasant, clean and peaceful holiday destination.
"Absolutely lovely cottage and fantastic area for walking."
Adults, children and dogs all had the best week! The owners are very helpful and we had everything we could possibly need - not to mention the gorgeous welcome basket! We would highly recommend and will definitely rebook... can’t wait to return.
"A lovely holiday cottage run by people who have thought about what you need when catering for yourself and provided it."
Welcoming without being intrusive they provided a lovely food basket with milk, bread, cake etc on arrival and were on hand if anything was needed. Would definitely recommend to others.
"Well equipped cottage Hosts were lovely Would definitely stay again"
"Middlefell View Cottage is a really lovely barn conversion, in a fantastic location."
The property itself is really well laid out and can easily accommodate 6 people with everything they need for a great week away. Beds were lovely and comfy and the lounge is nicely arranged around the wood burning stove. The owner met us when we arrived, gave us the tour and even had homemade goodies for us to tuck into before we had unpacked. The kids were introduced to the pigs while we kept the dogs from trying to say hello to the chickens. Walking in the area is beautiful, some wild and desolate places to get lost in plus some lovely river walks just 5 minutes away from the cottage. Would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to visit the area!
"The owners were lovely."
Very helpful and willing to answer every question. The cottage is delightful. There is one of everything except a hairdryer but we embraced it and let the windy valley do its job. There are animals on the property and the views are breathtaking. A really beautiful place and great first adventure using My Sykes.
"The Accommodation is first class, and the owners very friendly and helpful."
It is in a beautiful location and we would recommend it to anyone wanting to have a wonderful and relaxing holiday
"Middlefell cottage is about 3 miles away from Alston."
Our hosts met us on arrival and showed us around the cottage. It was a beautiful cottage in a very quiet setting. The walled garden was safe for our energetic pointer! We did keep him on the lead to get to the car though, because the 2 turkeys and various chickens were very friendly! The cottage was extremely well kitted out and was spotlessly clean. Our hosts left a wonderful hamper for us which was very much appreciated. The beds were super comfortable. Showers excellent and lots of hot water. Everything was fabulous. We spent our week discovering the surrounding area, from hadrians wall, nenthead mine, high force falls (stunning - you can walk under the waterfall and look for dancing fairies) and also walked direct from our cottage into Alston, which is a 4 mile round trip by the side of the river. We had a wonderful relaxing week in a beautiful place. Thank you so much.
"The cottage was wonderful and in an beautiful location."
The owners left a lovely welcome hamper....all in all a fanastic place.
"Beautiful cottage, lovely setting and the owners were helpful and provided us with a hamper full of goodies."
We would definitely book with Sykes cottages again.
"A wonderful getaway; beautiful cottage, very well appointed with breathtaking views."
Well located for days out - we went to Keswick, Penrith and Durham. We were also greeted with a generous welcome hamper with freshly baked bread, cake, homemade jam and fresh eggs which was greatly appreciated. We look forward to returning and would definitely recommend.
"Wonderful accommodation and location."
Well equipped. Owners on site and always on hand to answer any queries. Will be visiting again
"The Hosts were very friendly and helpful."
They provided a lovely hamper for our arrival. The cottage itself was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. A very relaxing break!
Really difficult conditions due to heavy snowfall but owner could not have been more helpful. Had a fantastic time walking in the valley despite the conditions.
"Had the most relaxing family break, the owners couldn't have done more, every little thing was provided from salt & pepper to toilet paper, dog towels and blankets to hot water bottles (for humans!"
) and they were available throughout should we have needed them although they were never intrusive. It was also made extra enjoyable by their kindness in allowing us to enter the property early and leave when we ready as there were no bookings before or after us. As I say exceeded our expectations in every way.
"Great family holiday."
Lovely view and peaceful place. Owner of the cottage is very good host and welcoming. If I would go back to Cumbria I will choose the Middlefell View again.
"The little touches made everything so much better such as arriving to freshly made bread & jam."
It was so peaceful there and was exactly what we needed. The owners were lovely and very approachable too.
"Loved the accommodation, very cosy, comfortable and in a beautiful location."
We stayed here over Christmas and would love to return when the nicer weather is here so I can go walking. The hosts were very helpful.
"Lovely property, welcoming and helpful owners and very quiet idyllic location."
A perfect get away for a quiet stay.
"It wAs above and beyond."
The welcome included homemade bread, jam, and lots more. The hosts were welcoming and helpful. Couldn't recommend this cottage more highly, and all in a wonderful part of the country.

Hudgill Farm Cottages
Alston 2 miles. These two sympathetically restored barn conversions, set next to the owners’ home, are joined via a lockable interconnecting door and are situated in a rural location, two miles from Alston in Cumbria. Overlooking sloping grassland leading down to the River Nent, the cottages occupy an idyllic setting, providing a quiet getaway for families and friends. Both cottages have been furnished and equipped to offer comfort, warmth and a welcoming return after an invigorating day in the Cumbrian countryside. Attention has been taken to retain and enhance the character of the building, with the exposed A frame beams and a large south-facing window where the old barn door used to be. Each property has its own private garden, whilst to the rear of the cottages is a lawned area where you can enjoy views over the valley. Footpaths lead across the moorland and the local area has very little light pollution, so this is just the spot for sitting back and stargazing beneath the night’s sky, before heading back inside for an evening by the woodburning stove. Nearby Alston retains its traditional country character, with a selection of welcoming pubs with open fires, serving real ale and good food. The Pennine Way also passes through the town, which is also on the C2C Cycle Route. With plenty of places to visit within an hour by car, including Hadrian's Wall, Beamish Open Air Museum, Durham Cathedral and the Lake District, these are perfect holiday cottages for a relaxing break.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
