  • "Brilliant holiday."

Perfect place to relax and enjoy the country side. The owners we're lovely hosts. Answered any questions and have made a perfect cottage. They had thought of everything you could need. It's such a beautiful place to stay. We'd love to come back. The two dogs were also welcomed. Garden was perfect for them and very safe even for rescue one. Thank you for a perfect stay.

The location makes it easy to get to the lakes as well Hadrians wall and Alston is a lovely little place, sadly the railway wasn't running when we were there. The cottage was lovely and had everything we needed for a brilliant stay including extra towels for the dogs, it was lovely to sit outside in the evening listening to the Curlews and Oyster catchers and watching the Hares play in the field, superb location would consider revisiting.

Around two miles from Alston, which has several pubs and two small supermarkets and direct access to the Pennines way. The cottage was beautiful as described, it was lovely and clean and the owners were welcoming and supplied us with cake, milk, eggs from their chicken’s. We would definitely recommend to anyone who wants peace and quiet and loves walking in a beautiful part of Cumbria.

The owners were very friendly and helpful with knowledge of walks etc. Some garden furniture would have been nice as the garden was sunny and sheltered. We had a fabulous stay .

  • "Lovely and clean and a great welcome hamper of homemade bread and cake plus milk in the fridge, tea bags and coffee."

It is a lovely cosy wee cottage and we very rarely heard the family next door so it has a nice feeling of seclusion. Most things have been thought of well in this venue and we especially enjoyed working our way through some of the many books available to read. The wood-burning stove made sure we were kept nice and toasty when the weather outside was pretty awful, just what we needed for our relaxing break away from work. Lots of information too for local amenities and walks. Very friendly and helpful hosts.

Then a storm came in which resulted in no electric. We try’s to stay but couldn’t do anything as the electric took out all electric in the area Decided to go home. Would recommend that you have a 4x4. If staying in winter time especially with snow forecasted

We are sorry that you felt unable to stay, it was unfortunate that you arrived during storm Arwen. Many guests do visit us successfully in the winter without a 4x4 but in snowy weather the roads around Alston should be chosen with care for journeys. The councils do a fantastic job of keeping them clear. Property Owner

Considerate owners have provided all the amenities required and go above and beyond by ,for example , providing an excellent welcome pack. This was our first time in the North Pennines, we would certainly return and would seek to book Wellhope View Cottage if it was available. Very highly recommended.

  • "The cottage was excellent, everything possible had been thought of, with the owners very accessible (they live next door) and extremely willing to do what they can to help with any problems (which we didn't have)."

The welcome hamper is a very nice touch, but then it is just a confirmation of how keen the owners are to make sure you have the best stay possible. The area was amazing too, with every journey adding to the day rather than being a chore. Although a lot of places weren't open due to the covid-19 pandemic, there was still a lot to do and there is such a range of places to go that are all in very easy reach. From Hadrians Wall to the North, to the Lake District to the South, Newcastle to the East to Penrith and Carlisle to the West, there is something for everyone. Alston has its own steam railway, and although it wasn't running during our visit, the walk beside it was superb. You don't need to go far to get great walking as there are some great walks that start from the cottage itself. Our highlight though, was the drive to Dufton followed by a moderate climb up to see High Cup Nick. If you like good views, it definitely doesn't disappoint. I think a property is best judged on whether people would return. We definitely would, and it would appear from the visitors' book that the majority of people do go back. All in all, this was another example of a Sykes property coming up trumps for us, so thank you and well done.

The welcome basket was lovely and the house was warm all day - even when it snowed outside and we didn't venture out in the car. We used the wood burner once, but only because it was fun; not because we needed to. There was plenty of room to park; the house was clean with lots of little touches which made our stay pleasant. We enjoyed our walks along the footpaths across the fields, one of which was literally outside our door. A good week.

To say the least i am not to steady on my feet so me and my wife had the down stairs bedroom. I will say i was a little disappointed that there was no grab handles on the wall to steady yourself whilst having a shower due to not having a non slip bath but this is me being selfish . • "We (my sister, myself and our mum) had a great time around the Lake District."

We got a very warm welcome from Diane the owner on arrival and showed us around the cottage. There was a welcome pack made up of home baked bread, lemon cake, butter, jam, fresh eggs (from her hens) and tea, coffee, sugar and milk. Logs were also provided for the log burner. We all agreed that the 3 piece suite was uncomfortable as we felt they were too firm and slightly on the small size. The mattresses were also too firm for us. Having looked at the photos before booking it looked like the shower room was downstairs, which would have been good for mum, unfortunately this was not the case (so expectations failed in this area). Having said that we would stay in a Sykes cottage again.

The property

A sympathetically restored barn conversion with cleverly designed living accommodation and a bedroom on each floor, along with a ground floor family bathroom and a first floor en-suite shower room.

The airy open plan living area has a compact kitchen, a dining area and a sitting area with toasty woodburning stove to nestle beside, whilst on warm occasions, guests can open the French doors onto the patio where views stretch over the Nent Valley.

Note: This property is connected to Ref. 918695, together they sleep 10.

Hudgill Farm Cottages

Alston 2 miles. These two sympathetically restored barn conversions, set next to the owners’ home, are joined via a lockable interconnecting door and are situated in a rural location, two miles from Alston in Cumbria. Overlooking sloping grassland leading down to the River Nent, the cottages occupy an idyllic setting, providing a quiet getaway for families and friends. Both cottages have been furnished and equipped to offer comfort, warmth and a welcoming return after an invigorating day in the Cumbrian countryside. Attention has been taken to retain and enhance the character of the building, with the exposed A frame beams and a large south-facing window where the old barn door used to be. Each property has its own private garden, whilst to the rear of the cottages is a lawned area where you can enjoy views over the valley. Footpaths lead across the moorland and the local area has very little light pollution, so this is just the spot for sitting back and stargazing beneath the night’s sky, before heading back inside for an evening by the woodburning stove. Nearby Alston retains its traditional country character, with a selection of welcoming pubs with open fires, serving real ale and good food. The Pennine Way also passes through the town, which is also on the C2C Cycle Route. With plenty of places to visit within an hour by car, including Hadrian's Wall, Beamish Open Air Museum, Durham Cathedral and the Lake District, these are perfect holiday cottages for a relaxing break.

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
