  • "On entering the cottage I went to turn the light on, unfortunately the rocker part of the switch fell of onto the floor, I contacted the owner immediately, and was told an electrician should have replaced the switch before we arrived, but no arrangements were made for the work to be done during our stay, we would have been happy for the electrician to come whilst we were in, or could have left the key in the key safe."

THE KITCHEN Some of the reviews describe the units as “tired” I disagree, apart from two of the plinths need realigning or replacing, the wood worksurface has sustained some damage over time, the valve on the hot tap was leaking, and the water has penetrated the wood, which has been mentioned in previous comments. THE LOUNGE A good-sized lounge, mould was found on the wall near the door to the rear yard, a regular spray with something like “HG Mould Spray” would help to control it, but the damp needs attention, as others have noted we found the heating inadequate for the winter months, some mention of being able to “boost” the heating, but I was unable to get the Hive controlled radiators up to a reasonable temperature, I realise we could have purchased logs for the stove, but I regard a fire as cosmetic and not essential, and doesn’t help the bedrooms. Shower/Bathrooms, Both sinks in the bath/shower rooms had difficulty draining away, not necessarily a problem, but the overflow will be compromised should anyone “forget” they’ve left a tap on, also there was a leak under the sink in the shower room, which was causing damp, and the delaminating of the furniture panel the cupboard was constructed of. To sum up a once exceptional cottage, in need of some attention, perhaps Sykes should employ a “secret shopper” who could give a thorough report, on some of the cottages on their books.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide this detailed feedback. All has been noted and most has already been addressed! We hope you had a fabulous stay and do hope you will come back soon. Property Owner

Really comfy and homely . Very warm although cold out didn't need the heating on. My 7 yr old Grandson called it a mansion. 6 of us and 2 dogs enjoyed this cosy cottage. The kitchen has everything you would need. Hawes is beautiful with many walks and days off exploring even went on the railway over the viaduct. The creamery is worth a visit 5 min walk. 10 mins into lovely Hawes. A superb place will visit again. Thank you

  • "We had an enjoyable stay at Hillside View Holiday Cottage."

The location was good being just a ten minute walk into Hawes. Although there's no parking outside the cottage, there is plenty of spaces to park just a few minutes walk away after unloading. As stated in previous reviews, the lounge is a little cramped due to unnecessary furniture, the sink in the upstairs bathroom is slow to drain away. Also, the outside space is a little dull.

Thanks for your feedback! We've taken on board your note about the garden and carried out some works. The lounge has been designed so that 6 adults can sit comfortably - hopefully you also found it to be comfortable and homely!! Property Owner

  • "There was a strong drain smell when we arrived that got worse when the toilets were flushed."

When I had a shower the next day the smell disappeared and didn't come back. Might be worth checking. We didn't use the dishwasher and couldn't find a plug for the sink. We managed to find a way to keep the water in, a half filled mug on th outlet. Everything else was great, thank you very much.

Thank you for your feedback! Around the time of your visit there were issues with the mains drainage, which were quickly resolved and happily haven't returned. Regarding the kitchen sink, there is actually a collapsable washing up bowl under the sink! Property Owner

  • "Parking is awkward with no possibility of parking at the house other than briefly to load/unload."

The closest parking is on street about 50m away. In busy summer season parking could be very difficult. The house is potentially nice but needs maintenance / upgrades. The large top floor bed is 2 single foam mattresses joined together. 1 is extremely soft. The top floor bathroom basin was blocked (the owner, when contacted about this, said there was nothing they could do about it to make this basin useable) and there was a strong drains smell often in this room making it mostly unusable. It would have been nice if a couple of bags of logs was provided for the log burner stove. Dining arrangements are poor. The table is tiny and there is very little space around it. The kitchen sink leaked so badly that water ran out of the cupboard beneath onto the kitchen floor. The boiler in a cupboard in one of the bedrooms is so noisy that it was impossible to sleep in there. The lounge radiator gave out very little heat meaning the room was always much colder than the rest of the house. Location is good just on the edge of Hawes a few minutes walk from the town centre.

We do make it clear in the listing that there is no parking outside the cottage, as it blocks our neighbour's drive. This is a small hamlet in the Yorkshire Dales, so think quaint narrow streets . There is ample parking about a 30 second walk away - this doesn't get any busier in the summer season, it is always easy to park here - and you can pull up in front of the cottage to load and unload the car. The superking bed is two single memory foam mattresses with a thick memory foam topper overlaying them both. We find this to be incredibly comfortable - as have many of our reviewers! Unfortunately at the time of this visit, there was an issue with the mains drainage outside the cottage, which was being dealt with by Yorkshire Water, but which caused a slight smell in the house. This has now been resolved. The top floor sink is useable, just slightly slow to drain. Regarding dining, there is room for 6 at the table (we have tested this frequently with 6 adults!!). Hillside is a cottage, not a mansion, so expect cosy not sprawling. We were not informed about the leak in the kitchen, so could not do anything to address this. The living room radiator is set to the highest temp in the house and is large. There is also a log-burner in there, which we always light as soon as we get up. Logs are readily available down in Hawes. Property Owner

Thanks for the feedback - the damp was being caused by a leaking drain pipe which has now been resolved! As has the issue with the mains outside the cottage. Property Owner

Some wonderful walks. Beds werre comfortable all bedding and towels provided. Has netflix, Internet etc. Lovely big powerful shower and Cottage lovely and warm. I would advise taking logs and firelighters. Cottage has alot of positives. Some negatives there was black mould on bedroom ceiling, backdoor and around windows. Dead insects stuck to blinds when you closed them. Dirty oven and trays. Did raise this with sykes and they asked for photos which we provided we were offered 20% refund of booking cost we either accepted or not as case would be closed. The owner was aware of tthe mould becsuse they had a leak in the roof but they didnt want to cancel our booking we were told. Shame there were these issues as the Cottage was a good size with lots of amenities. Dont be put off to book the cottage as its in a lovely area, a good size and lots of places to visit, these problems can be rectified hopefully.

For clarity, the weather had been particularly viscious and we had experienced an active leak in the roof, which had caused a small amount of mould in one corner of one bedroom. We didn't want to cancel the booking based on something as small as this. These issues have now been resolved. Property Owner

Thank you for your feedback. To clarify, guests are unable to park directly in front of the cottage door, as this would block our neighbour's drive. • "The house is charming, and we enjoyed our stay."

The cottage is well-provided and attractively decorated, in good order. We would return. Hawes is a good base for a Dales holiday, and from Gayle it is a pleasant short walk into town. There are a few drawbacks to the house however: the small sitting room is over-cluttered with unnecessary items of furniture, whilst the throws used to cover rather weary sofas are tiresome; less furniture would make it possible to create a little dining area in the sitting room, by the front window - which we did, having temporarily made space. Parking is very problematical, also. Overall, we had a good holiday experience.

*Thank you for your feedback. The cottage is suitable for up to six guests, so having an arm chair in addition to two sofas is key to comfort levels when there are six adults in the house! I do explain in the House Book that guests are free to move furniture around as they wish to make their stay comfortable - which I see you did. The tables have been bespoke-built to be versatile and, as such, can be moved around to suit each guests' needs.* Property Owner

The property

A lovely, stone-built, three-storey townhouse located in the centre of the small hamlet of Gayle, just a short walk from the centre of Hawes, North Yorkshire.

Decorated to a very high standard, this charming cottage is a superb base for a small family or group of friends to get together and enjoy a break in this wild and rugged corner of the Yorkshire Dales.

The front door leads into the well-equipped kitchen with dining area which has a beautiful slate floor and a modern Range cooker.

The adjoining sitting room is a real delight, with individual styling and luxurious modern furniture, all set around a stone fireplace with a cosy woodburning stove.

The first floor boasts a single bedroom with useful stacker bed, a spacious king-size bedroom and a stylish shower room, ensuring guests have that something a little bit extra.

The top floor features a spacious family suite with great flexibility, in that it can be a luxurious large room for a couple with a super king-size bed, a family room with super king-size bed and separate single bed, a twin room or alternatively a great room for three children with a three single bed configuration available.

Next to the bedroom is a modern bathroom with a delightful freestanding bath.

All bedrooms boast snugly memory foam mattresses and feather-filled duvets.

Throughout, the accommodation has a bright and cheery feel, created by the attention to detail the current owners have put into this first class holiday cottage.

To the rear of the cottage is an enclosed courtyard area with great views of the surrounding countryside, an ideal place to relax with a favourite tipple.

The village is famous for Gayle Mill, a restored 19th century state-of-the-art sawmill, complete with Victorian machinery, and driven by water-powered turbines.

Visit the waterfall at Duerley Beck, which runs through Hawes and is spanned by an old and narrow bridge, or cross by a ford at the point where the ducks and geese congregate.

There are also two other waterfalls, Gayle Force and Aysgill which can be visited.

Nearby Hawes is a popular holiday destination with a wide range of amenities including shops, pubs and tea rooms and, the not to be missed, Wensleydale Creamery, which is just a short stroll from the doorstep.

Contemporary styling throughout, with a subtle hint here and there of the historical past, makes this delightful cottage a great place to stay.

About the location

HAWES

Leyburn 16 miles.

Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Standing between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, the town is an excellent centre for walking and touring Wensleydale and the adjoining dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. In 1998 Hawes was awarded the English Tourist Board Silver Award for the "Best Day Trip Out". Modern traffic has long replaced coaches and horse drawn wagons along its narrow streets, but market day (Tuesdays) in Hawes is as busy as ever, with a farmers’ auction attracting sheep farmers from all over the north of England. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Grommit films, is now open to visitors so that they can see the famous cheese being made and sample the end product in a welcoming café. In the old station yard you will find the busy National Park Centre and Dales Countryside Museum. The Museum is home to the magnificent collection of Dales artefacts by the two great Dales historians and writers, Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby.

Kitchen with dining area seats maximum 3 people & the sitting room with dining area also seats 3 people. These can be joined together to sit a maximum of 6 people.
