  • "When booking our holiday I always check there is parking available and the details said parking for 2 cars ."

This is not the case as the patio parking is not wide enough for a larger car to drive through and I was told that the garage parking was not available as the owners son was disabled and needed to park there. The kitchen was very basic and there is a mouldy damp smell in the cupboards were food and kitchen equipment is stored and the mattress on the king size bed needs replacing. I myself have a disability and that's why I check there is parking. We have booked with sykes many many times and have never before had problems but on this occasion we were very disappointed.

  • "We had a wonderful stay at Rockville and will certainly look to book again."

Positives: - Location - never had better from a Hawes cottage and was literally a few seconds' walk to get into the centre of everything - Heating - toasty warm at all times - Big bed - sooooo comfortable resulting in great sleeps under that fab duvet - TV signal - spot on...many cottages have dodgy TVs Negatives: - Parking in a big car is tight on the patio and in the garage, especially doing it for the first time in the dark - Didn't get things that other cottage owners provide as standard, eg. board games, playing cards, information folder and a small welcome pack (teabags, coffee, biscuits, pint of milk) - The shower went from freezing to scalding in a repeating 20 second cycle....maybe the toilet cistern was re-filling and affected supply to the shower. Could be really dangerous for children and older people. Overall, was a really lovely break and the cottage certainly contributed to that! Thank you.

The new king sized bed was so very comfortable! The very clean kitchen had all that we needed to make a variety of meals. Great to be able to park our 2 cars. A cosy living room and good bathroom make this a very pleasant place to stay. During Covid the departure time had been adjusted to 9.00am to allow for additional cleaning. For some reason this still has not been returned to its former time of 10.00am. My only complaint for this super holiday stay.

  • "This is a great traditional stone bulit cottage in the heart of Hawes."

It is on a quiet back street and is peaceful, especially at night - no unwanted noises to disturb sleep. We found the whole house to be spotlessley clean, and it is well furnished. The beds and pillows are very comfortable. The bathroom is modern, with full bath and additional electic-powered walk-in shower with large cubicle. The kitchen is not 'state-of-the art' modern, but has a good efficient fridge, washing machine, electric cooker, small microwave oven and small appliances. There is ample crockery, utensils etc to prepare simple meals with, though you may struggle a bit if you want to cook Christmas dinner or prepare a wedding reception! However, holidays aren't for spending in the kitchen; go out and boost the local economy by eating in the locals pubs & cafes, and enjoy yourself :) In the sideboard there is a huge amount of up-to-date tourist information leaflets which cover the area, plus a folder, which are useful . If you have mobilty issues you may find this property isn't for you. The internal stairs are quite steep, and the steps up into the patio area from the kitchen door could be difficult for anybody who has knee or hip problems. I'm in my mid-70s and struggled a bit with these, but managed, and it's easy to go out of the front door and up to the patio via the garage access slope. The cottage is not suitable for a wheelchair user. The garage behind the property is up a steepish slope and is larger than many of the ones built today - we had no problem parking in it, leaving the patio free to enjoy. The property owner is very friendly, appraochable and helpful, a very nice person. We would reccommend this property without hesitation.

We had just had a week at another cottage in Helmsley, and the difference in overall comfort etc was noticeable. There was no welcome gift or a welcome pack providing helpful tips etc, neither was there a visitors book with their observations. The property was fairly dark in respect of the furnishings, carpets etc, and would benefit from brightening up. The cookware was rather limited and in poor condition. The 9am departure time was rather tight.

  • "Very lovely cottage - the owner is so accommodating and it’s beautiful inside , exceptionally clean and very comfortable- my only one downside was that there are some very steep concrete steps to the back door and up to the patio, and I went with my 86 year old Mum, but you can access the property through the front door, you just have to walk round but the rest of the cottage over rode this - fabulous having a garage, I saw some feedback that said it was ok if your car was small to medium - mine is a Mercedes’ and there was plenty of room to get it in the garage - it was great being able to put it away."

It really had everything we wanted and was very convenient for pubs, shops etc. and for local walks. Cottage owners were very welcoming and helpful. We arrived just as the weather turned very cold and the only slight drawback was the lack of heating in the hall, stairs area, which felt quite cold. Upstairs was also slightly chilly ( storage heaters not quite adequate), but both rooms were easily heated by the electric fires and were very cosy. All in all this was a very good holiday and we will probably return to Rockville.

  • "The cottage itself was cosy, well equipped and immaculately clean."

We had a few blips, in that the electric fire in the living room was really noisy, we could not fathom out the storage heaters times or temperatures, and we hadn't realised that the oven needed to have the timer on in order to work, hence a cold meat pie which we had to microwave, all of which we laughed about! Our main difficulty was the outside stairs leading to the garage and patio, which were really steep and hard to manoeuvre when you're battling with age and lack of physical mobility, perhaps this needs mentioning in the cottage description. The cottage is in an ideal location, being central and affording its own parking, which in peak times is a real bonus. Indeed, we would book again, except for the accessibility issues as it was very reasonably priced.

The property

This traditional, Victorian terraced townhouse is located in the popular town of Hawes, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Enjoying an enviable location close to the town centre, this lovely cottage is a short walk from the fantastic main street and a stone’s throw from the picturesque waterfall on the River Ure.

Set over two floors, the ground floor features a cosy sitting room, a large dining room, and a well-equipped kitchen.

Moving up to the first floor you will find two spacious bedrooms, providing ideal family accommodation, and completing the property is a bathroom.

To the rear of the cottage is a south-facing, elevated patio area.

This is a superb, spacious place to sit and catch the sun and enjoy family time in pretty Yorkshire Dales surroundings.

Next to the patio is a large garage, which offers a space to park your car, along with providing bike storage.

Hawes is a real gem of the Yorkshire Dales, a stone-built market town with excellent pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and a very good selection of shops.

Visitor attractions include a working rope maker, the Dales Countryside Museum and the much publicised Gayle Mill.

The surrounding Upper Wensleydale scenery is absolutely stunning, some of the finest on offer in all the Yorkshire Dales and is renowned as one of the finest walking areas in the country.

A highlight would be taking a stroll alongside the River Ure at nearby Aysgarth Falls or going slightly further afield to the Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks.

The market towns of Settle, Leyburn and Richmond are a short drive away, whilst Semerwater and Hardraw Force, England's highest single drop waterfall, are all nearby.

A delightful cottage from which to explore Wensleydale, Swaledale and beyond.

About the location

HAWES

Leyburn 16 miles.

Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Standing between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, the town is an excellent centre for walking and touring Wensleydale and the adjoining dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. In 1998 Hawes was awarded the English Tourist Board Silver Award for the "Best Day Trip Out". Modern traffic has long replaced coaches and horse drawn wagons along its narrow streets, but market day (Tuesdays) in Hawes is as busy as ever, with a farmers’ auction attracting sheep farmers from all over the north of England. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Grommit films, is now open to visitors so that they can see the famous cheese being made and sample the end product in a welcoming café. In the old station yard you will find the busy National Park Centre and Dales Countryside Museum. The Museum is home to the magnificent collection of Dales artefacts by the two great Dales historians and writers, Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby.
