  • "Fabulous apartment in an ideal location for Hawes."

comfortable beds and very clean. Some things were lacking in the kitchen. Few pans and the frying pan had the non stick surface peeling off! The cupboard doors need some tlc! An idiots guide to the heating would have been helpful! Single glazing means condensation on the windows constantly in the winter. The blue bin seemed to have disappeared and the box for recycling is inadequate! I would in no way class this as dog friendly! Dogs are only allowed in the lounge/kitchen and only on the floor! They are not even allowed in the garden! Only one door which leads onto the street so early morning and late night visits to the loo mean dressing for outdoors and walking the streets. Obviously not suitable for a female with a dog. So in summary a very disappointing property which certainly does not live up to its star rating.

Thankyou for confirming we have a fabulous well appointed apartment. It was great that you told us about the frying pan - it’s been replaced and the one loose kitchen unit door will be tightened up. We do allow dogs in the garden ( which is shared with the rest of the property) we just ask you don’t use it as a toilet. I am a female dog owner and I live next door. I walk my dog every evening around the block rather than use my own garden for her toilet needs - Hawes is an incredibly safe haven and I’m sure that is obvious to any visitor. Being in a National Park it’s also perfect for dog walks - several start direct from the apartment . We can’t change the geography of the house it’s been like that since 1837! So we will ensure the Sykes description makes it clear there is a journey of a little less than two metres to the garden which is enjoyed by our guests, especially in the summer for drinks and sitting in the sun. We provide throws for furniture as we realise guests love their dogs to sit on the sofa with them but ask they don’t sleep on the beds!! Most of our guests bring their dogs on holiday and we have never in several years had a complaint. Sadly blue bin blew away in storms but we have replaced with a dustbin and box for recycling. There is also a Council recycling bin a few metres from the property too. A pity Mr T didn’t contact Sykes and make these points while he was staying in the property as they could all have been rectified or explained personally by the owners during his stay. In the description it refers to log burning stove - this is not a log burner but didn't detract from our stay.

We were aware of some unexpected but mostly short-lived noise from the properties upstairs and next door. Parking nearby is definitely not guaranteed, though having managed to park outside the Old Surgery we only moved the car once! Excellent location otherwise.

The Old Surgery was warm, comfortable, extremely well equipped and conveniently placed for walks, pubs and local shops (Elijah's was a gem of a shop, with all the local cheeses)! The week simply couldn't have been better!

  • "The old surgery is simply wonderful."

My hubby and I and my mum had a fantastic stay. From the minute we stepped inside we felt relaxed. The place is super stylish and the beds oh so comfortable. We enjoyed evenings in Hawes without venturing out as kitchen was well equipped, the white hart inn did fabulous food, and the chippy was good. Brilliant days out and always happy to be back. Loved the sound of the waterfall and birdsong. We had a clipped shower utensil tray in the shower, really useful. Mum didn’t have one. When I checked there was one with rubber stoppers, but in the cupboard in the blue bathroom that needed replacing. Please could you replace with one similar to the main room so it will be easier for mum to shower when we come back. a fantastic place in a great village. We made full use of the shops, from the butchers to the deli, fish man on market day, funky pheasant shop.

    * The property is lovely, in a good location and the facilities work well. * The Welcome pack was not as good as last time - missing the wonderful crusty bed and a decent bottle of red wine. * The round “twist” door handles are difficult to operate for older guests or people with reduced grip. * Check in time of 5 pm needs revising - understand it was revised to accommodate extra “covid cleaning” but perhaps could be moved back to 3 pm now.. Would certainly stay again….overall it’s a really good property

A short walk to pubs , cafes and shops and the starting point for several beautiful walks . The whole area is very dog friendly . Beautiful old building furnished very well and extremely comfortable with everything you could possibly need . Thankyou for the welcome hamper . Only slight downside is dogs not allowed to go in communal garden (well not allowed to toilet in garden but who knows when that will be?!) As responsible dog owners who always clear up after our dog it was a shame .

If you don't know Hawes(which we didn't) it is quite bustling but your are soon out into the very beautiful countryside The owners of the flat were very nice, friendly and helpful. It is beautifully clean, spacious and handy for the town with lots of bars and shops etc. My only "nigggle" (and perhaps this is my fault for not reading it correctly) was there is no direct access to back garden for our dog to wander in and out. It is accessed from front door via a side gate. Hence the 4 stars otherwise would be 5 stars from me!

There was everything we needed in the accommodation the owner had even left us a welcome pack which included local cheese, milk and bread which was delicious. The accommodation was modern and very clean. The bed was so comfy and we slept so well especially after a good day spent walking in the beautiful country side. The weather wasn’t fantastic but that’s the chance you take this time of the year but even that didn’t dampen our spirits we got out and about and visited some amazing places. What was great was the proximity of the accommodation to the local pubs and shops which were in walking distance and which we enjoyed visiting in the evening and they were dog friendly which was fab. We had some lovely meals in the crown and enjoyed visiting the green dragon and hardraw force. We would stay at the accommodation again. Unfortunately we had to leave a day early but this did not spoil the holiday.

The owner is the son of the retired doctor and has refurbished the property to a very high standard. He understands that a holiday cottage should be at least as comfortable and practical as ones own home and there is no “make do” about the furniture and fittings. The property was perfectly clean, our measure of quality, and we felt at home as soon as we walked through the door. Lots of things to do in the area, depending upon one’s interests.

About the location

HAWES

Leyburn 16 miles.

Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Standing between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, the town is an excellent centre for walking and touring Wensleydale and the adjoining dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. In 1998 Hawes was awarded the English Tourist Board Silver Award for the "Best Day Trip Out". Modern traffic has long replaced coaches and horse drawn wagons along its narrow streets, but market day (Tuesdays) in Hawes is as busy as ever, with a farmers’ auction attracting sheep farmers from all over the north of England. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Grommit films, is now open to visitors so that they can see the famous cheese being made and sample the end product in a welcoming café. In the old station yard you will find the busy National Park Centre and Dales Countryside Museum. The Museum is home to the magnificent collection of Dales artefacts by the two great Dales historians and writers, Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby.

Please note: The communal garden is not to be used for pets toilet.
