  • "Accommodation and location great."

House is warm and comfortable. There is a shortage of cooking and serving utensils for large numbers wishing to cook big meals like Christmas lunch. The games room has no heating so it's not really viable as a games room in the winter but that meant we used it as a pantry as the fridge is too small for mass catering. A second fridge in the games room would be good for large groups in the summer. The dishwasher cutlery basket need replacing - it's got holes in the bottom which allow the cutlery to fall through and prevent the bottom water jet boom from spinning. The water pressure in the shower downstairs is low and the temperature control is not very easy to use.

The property is beautiful but there was a few maintenance issues that need addressing door handles missing or broken which led to getting stuck in a bathroom there is no security lights around the property and this then meant the hot tub and outside area cannot be used when dark which at this time of year is around 3-4pm

The property

Nestled in the charming market town of Egremont close to the Lake District National Park in Cumbria is the spectacular Gill Grove.

This wonderful, dog-friendly holiday home dates back to the 1880s and benefits from a fabulous location close to the abundance of attractions in the Lake District National Park as well as the Heritage Coast at St Bees, a stunning interior, off-road parking and even a hot tub; the perfect setting for large family gatherings or groups of friends looking to explore the wonders of Cumbria.

Cross the threshold into your new home-from-home and head straight into the fully-equipped kitchen where you can help prepare delicious meals that the whole family can enjoy in the formal dining room with enough seats for everyone!

On sunny evenings you could even fire up the barbecue and indulge in an alfresco affair before taking advantage of the house’s amenities which include an external games room with pool table, an external bar and a hot tub where you can savour a soothing soak and marvel as the stars fill the sky over Cumbria.

On colder nights, gather the family in the welcoming sitting room where the crackling woodburing stove greets you and enjoy a well-earned family film night on the Smart TV before washing off the day’s adventures in either the lower-ground-floor bathroom, the bathroom on the first floor or the shower room on the second.

When yawning begins, choose from eight beautifully-appointed bedrooms; there is a super-king-size and two double on the lower-ground-floor, two super-king-sizes completing the first and one double and two twins finishing off the second floor.

If you can tear yourself away from this idyllic abode venture into the heart of Egremont where you can stock up on all your self-catering goods or enjoy a much-needed break from the kitchen at O’Hallorans or further afield at The Royal Oak in Beckermet.

Alternatively venture to the coast at St Bees where you can roam the golden shores with your canine companion while admiring the spectacular views across the sea, if you're lucky you may even spot local wildlife like Herring Gulls or Razorbills.

Outdoor enthusiasts can venture into the Lake District National Park to uncover the abundance of walks, trails and summits including High Stile, Dale Head and Scafell Pike.

All this and more awaits at Gill Grove.

About the location

EGREMONT, CUMBRIA

St Bees 2.7 miles; Whitehaven 5.8 miles

The market town of Egremont is settled in the Borough of Copeland, on the western edges of the Lake District. This bustling town lies at the foot of Dent Fall, with its make-up much the same as it was around the 13th century. The main street opens out into the market place, with the ruins of the Norman castle at the southern end, just above the river Ehen. There are several churches, a couple of supermarkets, arts centre, shops and eateries. Ennerdale Water, nestled in Cleater is the westernmost lake in the National Park and is perhaps the most peaceful of all the lakes. With no public roads running along its National Trust owned shoreline, it is the set well off the beaten track and is the least visited of all the lakes. The seaside village of St. Bees, now the start of Wainwright’s famous “Coast to Coast” Walk, features a Norman priory and Elizabethan public school, as well as a nine-hole golf course and a host of traditional pubs. St. Bees Head is the only Heritage coastline in Cumbria and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, named after the village it sits next to. Abundant walks are available along the clifftops, as well as strolls across its sandy beach. Whitehaven is further up this beautiful coastline, an elegant Georgian port, nestled between the glistening sea and Lakeland Fells. Discover its wonderful parks and gardens and the Beacon Heritage Centre, where you can learn of the town's vast history. Muncaster Castle is 12 miles away, as is the Eskdale and Ravenglass miniature railway, and just over 15 miles away is Wasdale Head, the start of the climb to the summit of Scaffel Pike, the highest mountain in England. An ideal location for touring the western coast of the Lake District.
