  • "A king size quilt is essential for the double bed as the quilt only reaches to the edge and when 2 people are in the bed it doesn't cover both of you unless you sleep in the middle."

The single beds are just as bad as the quilts are not big enough to tuck in to keep them in place. Parking is tight and reversing out to the road is a skill which the neighbour will tell you as their conservatory has been hit more than once.

  • "Tanner Croft was ideally situated in Grasmere and exactly described as advertised."

The pantry/boot room (with the boiler, under the stairs) was ideal for hanging coats and placing boots after a day's walk. The space was ideal. Unfortunately the bed was not too comfortable for our liking (appreciate this is a personal thing) but the double duvet was pretty small also. Lovely aspect over the fields. The next door neighbour was keen to impress the need to access their outside store. We were evidently aware of the parking instructions provide by LakeLovers in advance of arrival, but some understanding for 5 minutes whilst we were unpacking the car would have been appreciated! Suggestions for an improved stay: appreciate that items cost but arrival packages are welcomed and can be covered in the rental fee. Coffee, tea, milk, biscuits on arrival goes a long way! Kitchen roll and another hand soap in the kitchen is a must!

  • "We arrived on the Saturday."

We had Wi Fi until the Tuesday, then the router developed a fault (not a local issue with the signal). We phoned Sykes several times to make them aware of the issue but, despite trying to contact the owner for four days, they could not get in touch with them. We would not have booked a property without WI FI as we depend on it for business. The description states clearly that the property has Wi Fi and for most of our stay it did not. We paid for a property with WI Fi and not having this available is unacceptable. We feel strongly that recompense should be offered.

  • "Lovely cottage great location and well appointed, it’s great having 2 toilets and a utility room."

There are a couple of things that would maximize the enjoyment / experience of Tanner Croft including; - a bigger outside table and 4 chairs for outside eating and to unite a group of 3+. - lick of paint in the twin bedroom, looks tired and one of the beds is very squeaky which woke up the occupant each time they turned. This was mentioned in the visitors book. - Bathroom - the shower head isn’t working properly and you need to hold it up as you shower or hold the shower head to shower yourself. - Bathroom - the shower cubicle ceiling is flaking away.

Kitchen is the best equipped by far and even had washing up equipment which I wish I’d known beforehand! The real fire was a nice touch especially as a bit chilly in the evenings. My only recommendation is better bed pillows as too flat & a bigger quilt cover. Other than that I really cannot recommend enough. Thanks for a fab stay x

  • "The cottage is in a perfect location within Grasmere, the out door cottage garden is lovely."

The cottage itself had all the items you would hope for and expect but the cottage needs a really good deep clean and a bit of TLC. There were many cobwebs around the place and it appears the cleaning that is being done is superficial only. The bathroom needs a really good scrub around the tiled areas and similarly in the kitchen. Nothing is awful it just need a bit of a good clean. Totally appreciate the cottage is well over a century old and this added to the charm of the place but it needs a bit of TLC to keep it up to date and to command the price being paid for a weeks stay. Overall though a lovely holiday, great location, charming cottage with history.

Many thanks for your feedback, we are so pleased you enjoyed the cottage and its superb location! We would like to reassure you that our properties are frequently inspected and we pride ourselves on maintaining a high standards and will look to schedule a deep clean, after what has been an exceptionally busy summer season. The shelves of the fridge weren't clean which affected my confidence in the cleanliness of the cottage, though everything else seemed fine. For other visitors it's worth bearing in mind that there isn't a welcome pack so bring milk, teabags etc. for when you arrive. Also bring dishwasher tablets, spare loo roll (the local coop had run out), soap etc. Overall a lovely cottage in a wonderful location.

  • "The building itself was not a problem but the cleanliness, comfort of the beds and the lack of the usual things like washing up liquid, kitchen roll and bathroom cleaner was much to be desired."

The single beds both need the mattresses replaced as the springs made an uncomfortable nights sleep. The duvet on the double bed was a disgrace. The wadding inside was in clumps and not even worth considering using! We needed to clean the bath and one of the toilets on arrival, once we had bought cleaning materials! There were cobwebs everywhere and also dead insects! I actually have photographs to back up these claims This is the first time we have ever experienced this and the first time to complain. I would like this to be an official complaint! I feel let down by Sykes inasmuch as possibly no inspection of this property and I also feel that the owner should be aware of the condition of things in his property. I feel that the price we paid for the week would certainly be enough for new mattresses and duvet covers for the owner to afford! I would very much like to hear your comments about my complaint.

  • "The cottage is in very good location especially if you like walking."

Excellent walks straight from the door. House is small but just about adequate for the needs of 4 adults, and mostly comfortable There are a couple of issues which I would like to raise though. The parking for house is for one car only, which we knew in advance, but it should be also explained that for a 2 car party, such as we were, this meant a weekly additional charge of £30 as there was no off road parking in village. The parking that is available is very restrictive and requires driver to park in a very specific way. ( This was explained to us in quite a confrontational way by the owner of adjoining cottage and took me several manoeuvres after a long tedious journey on the M6!) We discovered later there was a diagram in the information book showing the correct parking position which could have been sent out in advance and which would have avoided this unpleasant situation. The other negative issue for me was one of the twin beds was extremely uncomfortable with springs pushing up at the surface of mattress. It is obviously old and needs replacing. There were other minor irritations which I feel could be addressed to give more of a welcome to arriving guests. E.g. the house was cool when we arrived on a cold, grey February afternoon, and having just experienced the hassle about parking the car, did not feel cheering. Apart from a few meagre sachets of tea, coffee , milk and biscuits, the now expected ‘ welcoming pack’ seemed rather mean. A few inexpensive touches such as a bunch of daffs on the table and a bottle wine in the fridge would have given us a more positive first impression, whichI feel, although not essential, is nevertheless important. Although this all sounds very negative, I must point out that on the whole we enjoyed our week and there were good things about the cottage: once the log fire was lit, the lounge was very cosy and the sofas were comfy. The bathroom was spacious with generous sized bath and walk in shower and the kitchen had a lot of equipment for cooking and dining. We were very lucky to have some great, unseasonable weather during our stay and at one point were even able to sit outside in the garden and soak up the views and sunshine. I think with just a few, easily remedied adaptations, I would be giving the accommodation a much more positive review. I hope my comments have been helpful.

  • "A wonderful cottage in an ideal location-we will definitely return."

Only a couple of points - we had a power cut and could not find any candles, only a torch with the batteries almost run down. A washer drier would be a good addition as there is nowhere to hang clothes outside and in wet weather we ended up with wet clothes on all the radiators. One other item would be a baking sheet! Apart from that it was perfect!

  • "Cottage wasn't cleaned properly."

Quite a few cobwebs ! Have been on many many cottage holidays and this was the least welcoming. No tea , milk , welcome pack. This was not the end of the world but it would have been nice to be able to make a cup of tea and feel welcome after a long journey. As I said every other cottage we've stayed in at least had a pint of milk and some tea bags.

  • "The location is brilliant - it was lovely to be away from the road and have parking."

The rooms were large and light. The beds were comfortable and the shower was excellent. Well equipped kitchen that had most items we needed. Some feedback for you: The floors hadn't been cleaned that well. There was no washing up liquid provided. Only 3 cereal-sized bowls. A cow appeared in the field that you overlook mid-week and it's amazing how noisy they are - from 6am and through to nearly midnight :(

  • "Lovely cottage in a great location."

Equipment all good. Dishwasher and tumble dryer would be useful. A few cobwebs around the place so would only give 9/10 for cleanliness but this didn't detract from the time we spent at Tanner Croft. Car parking a problem if there are 2 cars.......municipal car parks expensive. Have graded it 'Met expectations' only because we have used the cottage before......on a first visit it would have exceeded expectations.

Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
