The most beautiful spot, so quiet, off road parking very secure and safe. So cosy, gas log burner amazing. Top quality fixtures and fittings throughout, everything very new. Loads of character. Everything worked as it should. Surpassed expectations, highly recommend.

Thank you for your wonderful review. So pleased you loved Bert’s and the surrounding countryside. Love the mention about the green lanes. It really is a great area to explore. Hope to see you again. Regards Carol & Martin Property Owner

  • "04-11 August 2033 A beautiful, quiet location to unwind."

It’s stunning, the attention to detail is like nothing we have experienced before. It has to be the most well decorated property we have ever stayed in. The more you look the more you see. The heating was very welcome, when the temperature dipped in the evenings. The kitchen was well equipped and the living space was really comfortable, and homely. We had a beautiful week of weather, controversially as the rest of the country was rather wet. We were a ‘stones throw’ from the Lake District, it’s great location to pop over and explore. It’s been an amazing week to celebrate my 50th birthday. One birthday present from my husband that I will never forget. Thank you to Martin and Carole for providing such an amazing place. This cottage gets five stars from us! Totally recommend.

So glad you enjoyed your stay at Bert’s especially as you were celebrating your birthday. May we wish you a belated Happy Birthday! We are really pleased that you liked the decor and found Bert’s a comfortable place to enjoy. Hope to see you again in the future. Property Owner

  • "We loved this property!"

All the lovely homely decor and beautiful danby and great knives, nice towels, all those little details that make a stay feel like that next level. Beautifully decorated throughout and really cosy and comfortable. The village of appleby nearby also has all the good basics and more. We loved the local cheese, meat from the butcher, and the strawberries, delicious! Cant fault this property, has bern our favourite so far on our 4 month trip.

Many thanks for your great feedback for Bert’s and Appleby as well. It’s means a great deal to us and helps us in so many ways. We hope the rest of your exciting trip goes well! Property Owner

Accommodation is absolute perfection and the location was the icing on the cake. Would not hesitate to recommend this 'little gem" and we hope to rebook here in the future. Both fittings and furnishings, as well as the building have been done to the highest of  standards and offer for a truly amazing and luxurious stay. Perfect location for the Yorkshire Dales , The Pennines and The Lake District and we even managed to cram in a visit over the boarder for Gretna Green,  then on to pay our respects at Lockerbie and even into Edinburgh. Thank you Sykes Cottages for a memorable holiday and an amazing place to stay. Tina & Brian Carter, SHROPSHIRE

Thanks so much for your great review. It means everything that you loved Bert’s and the location. Also liked your mention of places north of the boarder which is so accessible by car or train from Penrith. In fact we’re visiting Edinburgh ourselves soon. Property Owner

  • "This property was exceptional, the pictures on the website do not do it justice."

The decorations and furniture and facilities provided created a home away from home experience, except this cottage offers sensational views. Within striking distance of the lake district and peak district it is an ideal place for walkers, climbers or anyone wanting a break from city/town life. Appleby is a 5 minute drive away and offered some really nice shops for staple supplies. Penrith was around 15-20 minutes away for your bigger shopping needs, so all in all a well situated cottage which offered a relaxing break.

Thanks for your wonderful feedback. Not just for the cottage but for the beautiful surrounding countryside. We hope you can visit Berts again soon. Regards Carol & Martin, Bert’s Cottage Property Owner

  • "This is a beautifully decorated and fantastically equipped cottage."

Comfortable beds, excellent bathroom. The kitchen has everything you would want with high quality items. Weirdly, there were no oven gloves, but that was the only thing missing. Using an induction hob was a new experience for me, but I worked it out! There is a folder with brief notes on working appliances with a larger folder with full instructions, folders with things to do, places to eat, maps, and some lovely books for all ages. The owners have literally thought of everything! The only downside was my 6ft son had to learn to duck walking round the upstairs!

We had a superb time using Berts cottage as a base from which to explore and left feeling well rested. We couldn’t have wished for a better place and felt extremely comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the extra little nick knacks and home comforts provided and the cottage felt like a home-from-home. This is an exceptionally well-appointed cottage and we were pleasantly surprised that even in the midst of this pandemic, the owners had provided everything we could have wanted and the cottage was spotlessly clean. We hope to return to this part of the world in the future and to stay again in the cottage if it is available. We are also happy to recommend Berts Cottage and Sykes to our family and friends.

  • "Excellent cottage in excellent location."

We were blessed with good weather so were out and about every day. The cottage had some quirky artefacts which added to the interest and enjoyment. It's a pity there wasn't a picture window to enjoy the view from inside the cottage as on a cold, damp day you wouldn't benefit from the lovely patio and the rooms are rather dark. Very trendy, good quality kitchen equipment, though a teapot would have been appreciated. Beautiful surrounding countryside but not too far from amenities at Appleby and Kirkby Stephen. Ideal location for the Lakes and the Dales.

The cottage worked well for 4 adults although storage in the second bedroom is limited. The property is furnished to a very high standard but still feels homely. Locally sourced goods for comfort and pleasing on the eye mix with well known brand names in the kitchen but the whole property has a warm and cosy feel to it; it was hard to pack up and go home. Situated where it is, Bert's Cottage gives you access to a range of attractive places such as Appleby, Orton, Sedbergh and Penrith, as well as the miles of stunning countryside just waiting to be explored. Delicious food is to be found almost everywhere and the friendliness of the locals adds to the pleasure of visiting. I am already looking at our diary to see where we can squeeze another visit in!

About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
