We love Swaledale, and this lovely cosy cottage is ideally situated. We had a lovely friendly e-mail from the owners before we arrived giving us lots of additional information. It was such a treat to arrive there - fairy lights outside and a christmas tree in the lounge - very festive, especially as it was snowing!! The cottage really does have everything you need and Jayne & Kevin seem to have thought of everything. We really didn't want to come home. There are so many walks from the doorstep, ...

It was such a treat to arrive there - fairy lights outside and a christmas tree in the lounge - very festive, especially as it was snowing!! The cottage really does have everything you need and Jayne & Kevin seem to have thought of everything. We really didn't want to come home. There are so many walks from the doorstep, including welcoming pubs en route for lunch - The Punch Bowl in Low Row and The Farmers Arms in Muker are excellent. We also went to Hawes and did a walk there, stopping at Simonstone Hall for lunch. We also enjoyed The Kings Head in Gunnerside for fabulous evening meals. All welcome dogs (we have 2 Golden Retrievers) and are used by the locals who were very friendly. We had a fabulous holiday and would definitely return.

The property

A traditional stone-built cottage located in Gunnerside, a picturesque village in the Yorkshire Dales.

This miner's cottage dates back to the 1780s and is thought to have originally been two cottages, making for a spacious holiday retreat.

Set over two floors, the cottage has been sympathetically renovated in keeping with the old charm of this historic building.

The ground floor sitting room exudes character and has many original features such as the stone-built fire surround with woodburning stove, perfect for relaxing in front of after enjoying a day out in the stunning local countryside.

On this floor you will also find the spacious kitchen with dining area which offers a great space to enjoy a meal or socialise with family or friends.

Heading up to the first floor, you will find the master bedroom with its iron-framed king-size bed.

The second bedroom provides zip/link twin beds that can accommodate a variety of groups, and features a sash window seat, overlooking the village green and beyond.

Both beds are completed with Egyptian cotton bed linen for a real touch of luxury.

To the front is an idyllic south-facing patio area, ideal for sitting out and taking in the village and the charm of Swaledale.

This is a fantastic base for walkers, from a stroll along the river to a climb up Gunnerside Gill.

Gunnerside has much more to offer than being a peaceful retreat, The Kings Head Pub, two minutes’ walk away from the cottage, serves fine ales and good food and is a great place to mix with the locals, who will welcome you to join in with the fortnightly quiz.

There is also a fish and chip van that arrives in the village on a Friday night and Ghyllfoot Tea Room.

Situated in a prime location for touring around the area, this cottage is just a short drive from the market towns of Hawes, Leyburn and Richmond.

Reeth, Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force are all nearby and well worth a visit.

This delightful cottage provides wonderful accommodation for a relaxing break in one of the most beautiful areas of the country!

About the location

GUNNERSIDE

Reeth 6 miles; Richmond 15 miles.

Situated in the heart of Swaledale, Gunnerside is one of the prettiest villages in the Dales National Park. Something of a sleepy backwater, it is surrounded by traditional farm meadows, pastures and fells, with the pretty Gunnerside Beck running through the village centre before joining the glorious River Swale on the village outskirts. Amongst the cluster of old stone houses there is Ghyllfoot Tea Room and the village pub serves good food at lunchtime and in the evening. The market towns of Richmond, Leyburn, Hawes and Barnard Castle are all within 15 miles making Gunnerside a scenic and central base from which to tour the Dales.
