    Kitchen on small side but perfectly fine for a holiday. All really comfortable. Excellent location in centre of town and Haltwhistle itself is ideal for exploring the delights of Hadrian's Wall. Two supermarkets, two pubs and four other food options (chip shops, Chinese and Indian) all within a couple of minutes walk. Not really sure where the parking spaces were meant to be but the free car park was not a minutes walk and felt completely secure so it was no problem. All in all a great few days holiday.

  • "The flat was interesting, quirky and in a good position."

    The owner was very helpful. It was extremely well heated which was great for an autumn holiday. There was a problem with the drainage in the shower which meant we had to keep switching off the water mid shower to allow it to drain, otherwise it threatened to overflow the shower tray. The upstairs holiday makers were extremely noisy in the early hours which woke us up every night, I think we were just unlucky there. The flat is really handy for walking to fantastic countryside around Haltwhistle and up to the wall. We parked behind the property for the first couple of days, and then on the free council car park next to sainsburys for the rest of the time. We parked in the 2 hour space across the road to pack up. Parking was no problem at all and all free. A really enjoyable holiday altogether, thanks very much.

  • "We had an enjoyable stay at The Reiver's Retreat."

    It was situated in the centre of Haltwhistle very close to the amenities - Sainsburys was two minutes away and the pubs, fish shop and Chinese were one minute away. Despite this the location was quiet even on a Saturday night. The cottage was very comfortable and clean. It seemed rather strange having the bathroom next to the kitchen but this didn't detract from the overall experience. I would recommend this cottage as it is in an ideal position for visiting many places of interest such as Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindolanda or a few National Trust properties and from here you can travel to either the east or the west coast.

  • "The apartment was very cozy and comfortable and in an excellent location with plenty of places to eat right on the doorstep, a supermarket (Sainsbury's) a couple of minutes walk away, as well as lots of small shops on the main street."

    The surrounding countryside is stunning with Hadrian's wall nearby. We also travelled around the area by train with the station being only a 5 minute walk away too. All in all a wonderful place for a "get away from it all" break.

  • "We had an excellent escape from COVID19, with a centrally situated flat on the ground floor, which made access easy."

    Everything was easy to locate and plenty of information when we needed it. The flat was quiet and very little noise from the floor above. We loved the relaxing settee at the end of a long day's walking and exploring. Great to have free parking in the nearby shoppers car park. Wih we could have had more time to explore locally. but would be happy to come back and do more another time.

    Arrangements for access were perfect and very pleasant to be greeted with a personal message; wine and chocolates. Everything worked and was where you expected to find things. A very pleasant stay.

    Parking round the back meant it was easy to keep an eye on the car.Being on the main street ,it was close to all amenities.The resturant at the Centre of Britain Hotel and a visit to Vindolanda are recommended.

  • "Hi. The Person that greeted us on our arrival was very friendly and made us feel wecomed."

    The appartment in general was very good, nice and warm. Really comfortable furniture and bed. The wash hand basin in the bathroom was very tight (no way round this) and kitchen taps could do with a little attention . The main problem we encountered was the noise from the appartment above and its staircase,on several days this started in the evening and went on till after 02.00 am.This appartment is on ground level in the center of a village, so we expected a lot of general roadside noise and also from the general public late in the evening but this was not the case very reasonable. The Village and its people were great. We shall be back to this Village.

  • "A perfect home from home."

    Quirky use of an old drapers shop. Ideal location right in the middle of town. Great shops and pubs. Long and short walks all around the area, some from the accommodation itself- and country pubs to rest in. Great maps provided by Ian the owner. Loved exploring Hadrian’s Wall so nearby. Park in the free Sainsbury car park, it’s just along a short path behind the residence. There’s even a heated outdoor swimming pool a few minutes walk away. We will be returning.

  • "A gorgeous apartment in a lovely little town."

    Ian and Stella thoughtfully left a bottle of wine and box of chocolates to welcome us along with a lovely note. Everything is right on your doorstep. From the excellent food at the Black Bull or the wonderful fish and chips from Oceans, right next door, to Sainsbury's or Co-op a mere two minute walk away. There are some amazing walks and would highly recommend walking up Haltwhistle Burn and on to Milecastle 42 on Hadrian's Wall, stopping for a cheeky pint at the Milecastle Inn on the way back. We would happily return at anytime.

    The owners have thought of all things to make it feel a home from home. We used the property as a base for a bit of walking. Its ideally placed for access to the wall. About 40 mins from Newcastle and same from Carlisle. The local amenities are brilliant. Sainsbury's right behind the coop down the high street. The black bull pub across the way and a chip shop one side Chinese the other. However if u want to Cook yourself the kitchen is well equipped. One suggestion to any other people staying is to turn all radiators down on arrival. It was a little warm at times. Though that's not usually something to moan about. I am already looking when we can come and stay here again.

    The owners had the apartment ready for us within 2 hours and it was spotless. Being in the centre of Haltwhistle, with walks from the door(to Hadrians Wall) and a fantastic pub ( The Black Bull) just 50 yards away , made our three days there very enjoyable. Superb value for money.

About the location


Hexham 17 miles.

Known as the 'Centre of Britain', this small market town is a great place from which to explore both Northumberland and Cumbria. Haltwhistle boasts a good range of shops and pubs - one of which, The Black Bull, is a real ale pub serving good food! There is an excellent leisure centre with heated open air swimming pool and cycle hire in the town, with pony trekking nearby. One of the best preserved stretches of Hadrian's Wall is only a mile to the north with various museums, forts and milecastles to be seen. There is even an ongoing 'dig' at the nearby site of Vindolanda. This truly is magnificent walking, riding and cycling country, with the Pennine Way and various bridleways and cycle routes passing rivers, forests, castles and of course, Hadrian's Wall. Visitors will enjoy this location in all weather and all seasons – a regular train and bus service from the town to Newcastle, The Metro Centre and Carlisle, means that you can leave the car behind and enjoy!
