  • "Duncan called me a couple of days before our stay to make sure that we had all the information we needed."

The property is clean and tidy and very comfortable. It has everything you need and is in a good location for exploring the lakes.

Thank you We are pleased that you had a good experience Regards Duncan Property Owner

  • "Had a lovely stay over New Year."

There was Prosecco, bread and milk for us on arrival and plenty of wood for the log burner. It was clean and tidy. The owner rang the day before to give us information about the property and directions to it, which was very helpful. The ONLY negative thing that I'd say is that it has an ex smoker smell to the living room when you first walk in, but it disappears after a short while. Haverigg is a lovely little village with the beach a few minutes walk away. We'd stay there again.

  • "This is a lovely cottage, spotlessly clean."

Everything we needed was there, the owners have thought of everything. It was a pleasure to stay there. We will definitely return sometime in the future.

  • "I feel compelled to share my recent experience at Shipwreck Cottage in Haverigg, not as a critique, but as a sincere warning to potential guests."

Our stay at this property was nothing short of a nightmare, and I genuinely believe that others should be spared from what we endured. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this property has some serious issues that go beyond a mere bad day. The most egregious problem was the state of the jacuzzi. It was contaminated with black mould and bacteria, rendering it unsightly and a serious health hazard. Despite bringing this matter to the property owner’s and Sykes Holiday Cottages’ attention, they failed to address the underlying issue. Superficial "cleaning" only masked the problem, leaving us to wonder about the true safety and cleanliness of this property's amenities. But the issues didn't stop there. The lack of safety notices is a cause for great concern. My wife had a terrifying encounter when the dining room airer fell and hit her on the head. We were given no warning about any potential risks associated with the use of this equipment, leaving us to question the property owner’s commitment to guest safety. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of our stay was the owners and Sykes unyielding stance on their no-refund policy. Even in the face of such severe issues, they refused to consider any compensation for the inconvenience, health concerns, and overall disappointment that marred our holiday. In summary, my advice is clear: stay far away from Shipwreck Cottage in Haverigg. Our experience was nothing short of a disaster, and it's evident that this property owner and Sykes prioritise greed and profiteering over the well-being and satisfaction of their guests. There are countless other accommodations in the area that offer both quality and safety, and I implore you to explore those options instead. Your holiday should be a time of relaxation and enjoyment; you should never have to worry about your health and safety being compromised. Learn from our unfortunate experience and choose a different place to stay.

  • "We felt the Sykes property description was much too generous and it was really over-priced - it was a disappointment - dark and poky with inadequate lighting."

Garden furniture rusty, garden gates decrepit. The inside looked like it had been newly painted and was more or less clean (not the floors) but it had tatty ornaments, dusty fake flowers and net curtains everywhere. Cooker looked almost new but very cheap model - the first time I used the oven the knob came off in my hand. Cheap scratched pans, etc, etc

Thank you for your feedback. We do leave our contact number in the property and it is in our best interest to resolve any issues during your stay. You did not contact us, therefor we were not given the opportunity to. With it being a 200 year old cottage it can be a little dark in places which is why we provide additional lighting. The garden gate in question belongs to a neighbouring property. The curtains were updated prior too your stay and there are now 2 voile curtains in the bedrooms for customer privacy. Pans are replaced periodically. We even include pictures of the ornaments on our website so you can get a true feel of ambiance. The cleaners are Sykes recommended and do an amazing job as you can see from previous feedback. Thanks again for your comments. Property Owner

Nice walk along the beach near by and not to much of a drive to lots of other lovely areas.

  • "The cottage was fine."

It did the job but was a bit expensive. Haverigg is not a great place. It is rather grey and tired. Eating out was very limited especially Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • "We had booked the same cottage for a break in November 2020 but it was cancelled due to Covid 19."

We re-booked for May 2021 and are pleased we did as we had a thoroughly good few days. The cottage was well located and comfortable. The main attraction was it being dog-friendly, and we had some excellent walks along the very handy beach. This was our second holiday booking with Sykes Cottages and we will definitely make a third.

  • "Sorry to say that the beds in both rooms were very uncomfortable."

Did not have a good nights sleep at all during our stay. We decided to leave a day early due to this

Regarding the comments on the beds please be assured that 2 of the 3 beds are new, although I do appreciate mattresses are subjective and may not have been to your taste. Property Owner

Close to Black Combe its a great walk with a beautiful view of the sea, land and other mountains. Only a 45 minute drive to Wasdale Head if you decided to climb the Scafell Pike, next time we will go without our dogs as they are too small. We had good walk around the gorgeous lake. We will come back there again

The property

Set in the charming village of Haverigg in south-west Cumbria is Shipwreck Cottage, a lovely semi-detached cottage, ideal for a couple, small family or group of four wanting to enjoy the coast and the Lake District National Park, both of which are in easy reach of the cottage.

Access to the cottage is found via a shared path with the neighbour, although Shipwreck Cottage has the added benefit of an external gate to the street at the rear, and roadside parking is available at the front of the property.

Step inside the property to discover a homely, carpeted lounge with a sofa and armchairs to relax into while enjoying your favourite show in the Freeview TV as the woodburning stove fills the room with warmth.

Continue into the dining room, which offers seating for the group to enjoy home-cooked meals together, with a gas fire heating the space and adding a homely feel.

The kitchen is fully-equipped with all of the appliances you could need to create delicious meals, and the back door provides access into the rear courtyard-style garden.

There is sun room with seating, providing a quiet space to enjoy reading a good book, while the handy shower room completes the ground floor layout.

Upstairs, you will find two spacious bedrooms; a twin that can be made into a super-king-size by pushing the beds together, plus a double bedroom, able to cater to a variety of groups, both served by the family bathroom with bath.

The second floor is accessed via a small metal staircase and offers an attic conversion that makes for a wonderful study area or a playroom for the children to while away the hours.

Outside, the courtyard garden is an ideal place to sit out with a morning coffee or to enjoy an alfresco lunch, while the shed provide storage spaces for bikes.

The cottage is well-placed in the centre of the village, meaning a variety of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants are available within short walking distance, as well as a playground by the coast, a lovely Blue Flag awarded sandy beach and Hodbarrow Haverigg Lighthouse, built on the Hodbarrow Outer Barrier sea wall in the mid-20th century.

The nearby town of Millom offers a further selection of shops and cafés, as well as a discovery centre, Hodbarrow RSPB Reserve on the Duddon Estuary, a protected area important for birds and other wildlife, and the Millom Ironworks Local Nature Reserve.

Head into the Lake District National Park to enjoy walking and cycling opportunities through forest, rolling ocuntryside and around picturesque lakes; climb Black Combe, Whitfell and The Old Man of Coniston, visit Swinside Stone Circle, see the magnificent owls at the World Owl Trust, explore the National Trust's Hill Top, which is the former home of Beatrix Potter, hop on a boat to enjoy Coniston Water and Windermere, or take part in a watersport activity.

Shipwreck Cottage offers plenty to see and do for an enjoyable Cumbrian holiday.
