  • "Stayed for two nights on 30th an 31st December 2023 - to see the New Year in."

A very nice comfortable cottage with plenty of space in an excellent picturesque location. The outdoor seating area both up and down would be very welcome in the warmer months. The pub nearby was a good bonus. Would highly recommend this cottage.

It is the perfect cosy getaway and really gave us time as a family to relax taking in the beautiful surroundings. The host are so responsive and helpful. The house was beautifully decorated and was such a gorgeous drive up to. The children loved it and felt so Christmassy. We very rarely go back to the same place twice but High Rigg is a place you just can’t help but revisit. Thank you so much for another beautiful stay

The only thing that spoiled our stay was the weather as it meant we didn't really use the hot tub on the balcony. We couldn't understand why the hot tub wasn't under cover like the others that were also advertised and perhaps it could do with a retractable awning? We had no problems with the internet although the TVs were a little bit dated. I can't argue with this place if you're after somewhere remote.

It is rare to find a holiday cottage that is as beautiful inside as outside, often if there’s amazing views or location the owners don’t bother with the inside so much, but not Brenda she’s goes the extra to make everything thing about your stay amazing, the attention to detail makes the inside off the cottage as wonderful as the views from balcony and she really looks after her guests from delicious homemade cake on arrival to just feeling nothing is to much trouble. From the pictures we thought this cottage looked amazing but even they don’t do it justice, as to when your actually in it, we feel like we’ve been away for much longer. From the moment Brenda met us with the warm fire going and the cottage all a glow with soft lighting High Rigg wowed us and we can’t wait to return. This cottage had everything we could need including washing up liquid, tea, coffee & hot chocolate, condiments and even wash cloths in the bathrooms which is great when you’ve packed in a hurry. Loved the hot tub which Brenda had gone the extra trouble of making sure it was up to temperature for us that first night even though we were a last minute booking. There’s plenty of places to visit in the area with Hadrian’s Wall so close but you could honestly not leave High Rigg and have an amazing break away from it all if you don’t want to get back in your car till home time, and then you won’t want to leave.

About the location

BRAMPTON, CUMBRIA

Carlisle 10 miles.

The market town of Brampton is the ideal base for exploring Hadrian’s Wall. The town boasts a rich and colourful history going back to the Roman occupation, Border reivers from Scotland and the Jacobite uprisings, plus bonnie Prince Charlie established his headquarters in one of the old buildings in Brampton. In the centre of the town is Moot Hall, which was built in 1817, and now houses the Tourist Information Centre, and there is a large motte to the east of the town, which is 135 feet high and has the statue of the 7th Earl of Carlisle on it. A few miles outside Brampton is Talkin Tarn Country Park. It covers 120 acres of farmland and woodland, 65 of which make up the Tarn, a 10,000 year old glacial lake, fed by underwater springs. Two miles away is Gelt Woods, which is an ancient woodland and RSPB nature reserve and has the River Gelt running through it. Brampton is a wonderful base for exploring this historic and scenic area.
