The set up of the cottage meant it was easy to keep everything clean and stress free. I love cooking; amazing kitchen with everything you might need. The wine fridge was well used...we are looking to install one at home! Plus Booths supermarket and Milnethorpe is walkable and has great produce. Cosy, top class accommodation, top class location with so many options for walks. We were warm, relaxed , happy and could have stayed forever. Communication with the owners easy. We did wish there were less signs around the cottage remind us not to do something. While we appreciate keeping the cottage in mint condition, the signs are constant reminder that we have to be aware and careful about what we do or don’t do. It’s not as relaxing when we have to be so alert about everything in a holiday cottage. Also, while it’s a dog friendly cottage, the rules in the folder includes no dog in any carpeted areas. Which means, anytime we want to relax and have a fire, or just enjoying time with the family, our little yorkiepoo can’t be with us and have to be told to stay out. We weren’t aware of this when we’d booked it. Maybe a gentle reminder in the booking site just so people are aware? Overall, the nicest cottage we’ve stayed in. Many thanks!

  • "I had e mailed Sykes on 23rd September 2020 to ask if we could take 2 dogs and was advised on 24th September 2020 by Rachel you would contact the owner in regard to the requested week."

I was told I could then book this. We arrived on Friday 18th June and everything fine. On the morning of Saturday 19th June I received a text from the owner saying only allow one dog. I found where the owners lived but they were out so spoke to their neighbours. Some 30 minutes later I rang the owners and was able to reconcile the situation of which she could not remember saying OK for 2 dogs and stay, however we offered to leave, pay bond and asked if the owners wished to make a daily property inspection. I advised the owners of evidence from yourselves of the 2 dog request and contacted yourselves on the 19th June but have been ignored. This situation put a dampener on the holiday and it was my wife's birthday on 21st June. The owners have since sent a text saying thanks for leaving it clean and we could go again. I feel our credibility has been doubted and am more disappointed with Sykes lack of response.

It had everything we needed and more for our short stay. We particularly liked the modern furnishings and the log burners. The beds were extremely comfy. Also a real bonus that the cottage was dog friendly. Ample parking and access to the property perfect for muddy wellies and boots, and animals, after a wet outing! The weather was very intermittent, so unfortunately we did not get to enjoy the outdoor facilities, but I can imagine it is great for al-fresco dining on a sunny day. The cottage is located perfectly for all the lovely surrounding areas - the scenery is stunning. Windermere is roughly a 20 minute drive from the property and Grange-over-Sands about 15 minutes. Should our stay have been longer, we would have loved to explore further afield. Thank you for our welcoming treats - the homemade jam was delicious. • "We have stayed in a few Sykes properties so far, all have been excellent but Ghyll Cottage is the best by a long way."

This was everything we could want of a cottage - its transformation has been well thought through - it is modern with clean lines and tastefully decorated and furnished, yet it maintains the feel of a homely cottage inside and still has its heart. We were 2 people down due to their local lockdown, the cottage easily has ample room for 6 people though. Everything was pristine and sparkling clean. The storm porch entering into the boot room/utility room and loo is so clever, so no muddy shoes or wet coats in the living areas. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, leading to a snug. In the large dining room and lounge, the log burners are a lovely touch. Upstairs, the bathroom and en suite shower room are well appointed and luxurious. The beds are supremely comfortable with high quality bedding - we slept like logs. Each bedroom has a large built in double wardrobe. Lighting is excellent with lots of well placed power points. The hosts were friendly and helpful and we were greeted with a little hamper comprising tea, coffee, milk, eggs and delicious jam made by the owner. We are feeling spoilt and sad to leave - we will be back (hopefully with the missing members of our party!)

  • "Ghyll Cottage is a fabulous place to spend your holiday."

The cottage itself has been beautifully renovated to a very high standard and is very comfortable. We didn't have the need to use the log burners but I imagine they will make the house very cosy in the winter months. Plenty of room with different areas to spend time, high quality fixtures and fittings throughout and everything you need for your time there. The garden is a lovely area to sit out in if you have the weather which we were lucky enough to have. Our only comment here would be that it needs a gate at the entrance to the garden. I'm sure this could be easily rectified making the garden fully enclosed and dog / child safe. The rest of the garden is fully enclosed with either a wall or fence. We managed fine as our dog is old and not quite the escape artist she used to be but you may need to keep an eye on younger more adventurous dogs, (or use the wheelie / recycle bins as a temporary gate as we did). The location is great for visiting that side of the lakes with really easy access. Milnthorpe, just 1 mile away, has pubs, shops and a supermarket. All in all a lovely cottage and highly recommend a stay here. We will certainly stay again in the future.

About the location

MILNTHORPE

Arnside 3 miles; Silverdale 6 miles; Kendal 7 miles.

Milnthorpe, once an important medieval market town, is located in the South Lakes between Kendal and Carnforth, just a few miles from the seaside village of Arnside. Reminders of the town's history can still be found today amongst the narrow lanes and historic buildings, which speak of a time when a coach and four was more common than a four-wheel drive. Set in lovely rolling countryside, the area has much to offer, with the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis offering a tropical hall and butterfly house. Dallam Tower and Levens Hall (historic and beautiful stately homes with their deer parks, topiary and ornamental gardens) provide a great day out for visitors. Leighton Hall, Sizergh Castle, the Great Lakes Aquarium, Windermere and Grizedale Forest are also all within easy reach and well worth a visit. From stunning limestone pavements and wonderful woodland walks to beaches and scenic coastal paths, there really is something for everyone.
