    “A wonderful long weekend”

We stayed at West Wing Cottage for three nights at the end of December 2019. The cottage is beautifully decorated and felt like a home away from home - we especially loved the log burner which was very cosy! Downstairs there is an open plan kitchen and living room with good facilities. There is no washing machine but you can request laundry services for a small extra charge. We liked the selection of games and DVDs in the living room to pass the time on the evenings. The bathroom was very nice and had a good supply of hot water as well as a complementary bath bomb! The whole cottage was spotlessly clean. There is off road parking outside the cottage and lovely views towards Hexham. We took our dog and he was made very welcome with a bag of treats waiting for his arrival! There was a fantastic welcome hamper for us too as well as some milk in the fridge so we could have a cup of tea/coffee. There are lots of good places to go walking nearby including Kielder Forest and Hadrian’s Wall. The National trust properties of Cragside and Wallington are close by and definitely worth a visit. We wanted to visit Hexham old gaol as well but it was unfortunately closed for winter - maybe next time!

The property

Hexham 2 miles.

A superb stone-built, Grade II listed wing of a former Bastle house, attached to the owners’ home in the sleepy little hamlet of Beaufront Woodhead, two miles from Hexham, Corbridge and Hadrian's Wall.

Your charming cottage provides an ideal romantic getaway, from where the delights of the Tyne Valley can be explored.

West Wing Cottage boasts many original features, such as flagstone flooring, cast iron range and an inglenook fireplace housing a woodburning stove.

Tastefully refurbished to provide a cosy retreat, this lovely cottage is accessed via an impressive front door which leads to the open plan living area; the small but well-equipped kitchen has all you need to rustle up a tasty meal and what could be nicer than curling up with a nightcap in front of the woodburning stove.

A staircase leads you up to the first floor with a welcoming bedroom, which boasts panoramic views over the surrounding countryside, and the bathroom provides a well-earned soak at the end of your day.

To the front of your wonderful cottage there is a large, enclosed garden with patio, ideal for enjoying an alfresco meal.

Just a seven minute drive from your cottage takes you to The Rat at Anick, a pub/restaurant, which serves first class food and top-quality ales, and the nearby ancient village of Corbridge has lovely shops and tempting tea rooms.

A short drive will take you to Hexham, a bustling market town with a 7th century abbey, shops, restaurants and supermarkets, and if you venture slightly further, you will find the A69 or the Military Road, perfect for exploring Hadrian’s Wall country.

About the location

HEXHAM

Newcastle 22 miles.

A bustling little market town, Hexham has several antique shops and is popular with tourists visiting nearby Hadrian’s Wall. Beautiful old Hexham Abbey dates back to the 7th century and has a superb Saxon crypt. Shoppers flock to colourful stalls in The Shambles in the Market Place on Tuesday and close by is the 14th century Moot Hall, now an art gallery. The town boasts plenty of open spaces, particularly the Sele next to the abbey, which is now a lovely public park. Nearby is Tyne Green - a riverside country park - and Hexham Race Course is just to the south of the town.
