  • "Lovely holiday cottage with excellent facilities."

  • "Was exactly what we wanted."

The upside down accommodation worked perfectly for us. My only criticism is the lack of bbq facilities but I understand the owners concern regarding fire risk. However the newish Webber electric could be an option placed on the rear stone wall behind the decking perhaps? Just a thought

5 mins walk from well stocked Co-op which provided everything we needed, plus several other eating options in the pretty little town. Beautiful area, plenty of walking trails so our dog loved it too. Highly recommended.

  • "The property was fabulous very comfortable, spacious and definitely well equipped…."

Would definitely recommend to family and friends. The only downside was the twin bedroom downstairs was very cold due to lack of sunlight and the underfloor heating not being on.

The whole house is set to a minimum of 20 deg, warmer in the living areas. Portable heaters are available to guests if they find the central heating is not meeting their needs. Property Owner

  • "This is an exceptional property that had absolutely everything you may need for a week away."

We were a family of 5 adults and a dog. There was plenty of room for us all. The main bathroom was stunning with the biggest, deepest bath I've seen. I'm quite tall so it was ideal. The property is very well kept and spotlessly clean. There was plenty of cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils. The centre island in the kitchen was great to gather round and chat while cooking. The decked area that stretched the whole of the rear of the property is a lovely suntrap. If there is only one downside, the mattresses are a little uncomfortable and possibly ready for upgrading, but that is being very picky. We will definitely be returning

  • "We met up with family at Monksmoor Cottage for a staycation, with the party being made up of 5 adults and 2 children."

We found the cottage sparkling clean, spacious, and beautiful. The entrance hall has the wow factor with its wooden staircase. Three of the bedrooms lead off from here and were lovely with nice comfy beds. The family bathroom was big and the roll-top bath was popular! Upstairs the main room with the log burning stove, old fireplace and wooden beams was gorgeous. The photos don't do it justice. Logs were provided for the stove but were not needed as the house was lovely and warm. The kitchen was really well stocked and we thoroughly enjoyed the welcome package. Thanks! Shame we couldn't use the aga but the other oven was fine and we wouldn't know what to do with the aga anyway! The dining table was well big enough for all of us. Great washing machine and tumbler. The cottage is in a nice village. The coop is 5 minutes walk with a few pubs and the chippy a few minutes further. Had some lovely sausages from the butcher and went to the forresters one night for tea. This is a French restaurant and the food was really good. We also had fish and chips one night which were tasty. The local area is beautiful. We visited low force, high force and summerhill force waterfalls which were only 10 minutes drive away. We also went to Weardale Adventure Centre one day which I can highly recommend. We did archery, canoeing and gorge walking. The gorge walking was amazing but not for the faint hearted! Overall we had a fabulous time here and maybe will come back one day. And thanks to the hosts for being so accommodating.

Booking process is super easy, app is helpful, key collection and instructions were clear and concise. Much better than another company that I'm currently dealing with. Not wanting to moan, but just to let you know, parts of the cottage were a little dusty and there was some rubbish under some of the beds. None of us are perfect though. Absolutely amazing holiday. The whole family (3 generations) loved the house. We found the big open plan living area was excellent. We were blessed with wonderful weather and enjoyed using the deck for relaxing and having a drink. The children loved the little cosy bedroom upstairs and used the snug as a playroom. All the bedrooms were lovely and comfortable too.The kitchen was the best equipped one we have been to in a long time. The only negatives were, that one sofa...the leather one, was not very comfortable in the sitting area. It would also have been nice to have more outdoor chairs which were more comfortable too. We enjoyed the area very much and it was easy to walk into Middleton village where we could buy nearly anything. We would definitely book again.

  • "This is a beautiful house in a wonderful location."

The house has been decorated & equipped to a high standard and is very elegant. The photos do not do it justice. The first floor is open plan, though there are glass panelled doors you can shut off the kitchen with. The snug off the lounge is a lovely addition and full of books, games, puzzles etc. I would say it may not suit visitors with very young children perhaps as the sound from the open plan lounge (TV or chat) can be heard by those downstairs in the bedrooms, but this wasn't an issue for us. The large claw-foot bath in the main bathroom (bath, shower, toilet) is a joy and there is also an en-suite with the master bedroom (shower, toilet) and an additional toilet upstairs. There is a small laundry room too upstairs which was very handy with washer, dryer, drying racks, iron & board etc. It is also a very warm and cosy house, masses of hot water too. There is also a log burner though we didn't need this in August! The small town itself is lovely, 3 or 4 nice cafes, particularly The Teespot, all dog friendly and a few options for dinner out and excellent Fish & Chip shop - we enjoyed the food at the Teesdale Hotel very much (also dog friendly in the bar). There is a large and well stocked Co-op 5 minutes walk away for groceries and a local butcher a few minutes further on which also sells local cheeses, pies etc. It's a great area for walkers and nature explorers, riverside walks & the Pennine Way & Teesdale Railway Path all accessible by foot from the house and masses of other walks locally as well as wonderful country pubs and beautiful villages.

The house was comfortable, spacious and airy which helps when you have 4 couples sharing facilities who have never had a holiday together, despite being friends for a long time. It had everything we needed (except a BBQ - but we can understand the difficulty when there is no garden, as such.) It was a very convenient location to access walking in Teesdale and the small town of Middleton was easy to walk around, if we wanted to eat out or pick up provisions. Parking was a little difficult for 4 cars, but we managed. We would have liked another ensuite or shower - but the overall price reflected the number of facilities very fairly and we recognised that. Absolutely recommend this cottage.

The property

A delightful, stone-built detached house located on the edge of open fields in Middleton-in-Teesdale, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Conveniently situated on the road into the village, the property has been beautifully refurbished with an unusual upside down design, brimming with character.

Finished to a high standard, it combines contemporary styling, furnishings and fittings with a subtle blend of period features introduced during its conversion.

The open plan living area is a delight with a myriad of A frame beams running the full length of the room, along with exposed stonework, shuttered windows, a beautiful oak floor with cosy underfloor heating and a feature fireplace with woodburner.

French doors from the separate snug lead out to a magnificent decked area with furniture where you can settle with a hearty breakfast and take in the sights and sounds of the surrounding countryside before heading out for an adventure.

The kitchen follows the cottage’s country charm theme with a centre island and fabulous tiled floor.

The first floor also has a twin bedroom and a cloakroom whilst the ground floor consists of three bedrooms, one with a luxury en-suite, along with a family bathroom and a door leading to an enclosed courtyard.

The surrounding meadowlands provide great walking opportunities, with nearby woodland paths providing the chance to enjoy much of the local wildlife.

Middleton-in-Teesdale offers many local pubs, tea rooms and restaurants, whilst the nearby market town of Barnard Castle, with its cobbled streets and quaint lanes, attracts visitors all year round.

Slightly further afield, the Northern Dales are waiting to be discovered and visits to medieval Raby Castle with its deer park, Bowes Museum, High Force Waterfall and Egglestone Hall Gardens are not to be missed.

A superb retreat to return to after days spent exploring.
