  • "We stayed as a group of 6 adults (3 generations) and a Labrador - an annual event at varying places in the North celebrating our Dad’s (Grandpa’s) birthday."

A beautiful property in a great location. We all slept extremely well on comfortable beds and notably comfortable pillows. Shower facilities met our needs perfectly. We ate in Middleton on our first night, cooked at the property for the second (a very well equipped kitchen) and ate Sunday lunch near High Force. One very small issue was dealt with by the owner swiftly and easily via email. Overall we agreed that this was our favourite stay so far.

We had a lovely 3 night weekend stay here as a group of 6 friends and two dogs. Easy parking 3 cars right outside the property, and it was only a 10 minute stroll into the village centre. Ideal centre for walking in beautiful countryside. Really couldn’t fault it.

3 full size bathrooms, so no need to queue, Beds were all very comfortable and bedrooms at front of the house were very quiet even so close to the main road Lovely little village only a 10 min walk and we had a lovely lunch at the nearby garden centre Lots of long walks all round the area, we would definitely recommend the area as it was lovely

We had a great time together as a family of 8 and 2 pooches. All spotlessly clean with great facilities. Huge open plan living area upstairs with traditional furnishings and oak beamed high ceiling. Kitchen also upstairs with I bedroom and snug with patio doors. 3 further bedrooms downstairs. King sized bedroom had an large on-suite and family bathroom was amazing. Lovely decked area with plenty of seating. Few good tearooms and pubs within walking distance. Not far from Barnard Castle and High Force. Well worth a visit. Owner was very helpful and lots of information was provided before our visit. We hope to stay again and would highly recommend.

In fact it is better than listed as there is now a full shower room on the first floor, not just a cloakroom. If you just want a relaxing walking holiday you will not need to use your car at all. Walks from the door, shops in the village & a fantastic French restaurant with an informal bar attached. The Co-op shop, butcher & fish & chips are very good and there is even a small antiques shop worth a browse. If you do go further afield, we recommend a visit to Bowes Museum. The owners have gone out of their way to make sure you have all the information you need about the house & about the surrounding area & there was a welcome pack which was appreciated. We have been renting holiday homes in the UK & France for the last 30years & this is certainly one of the best.

We found the cottage sparkling clean, spacious, and beautiful. The entrance hall has the wow factor with its wooden staircase. Three of the bedrooms lead off from here and were lovely with nice comfy beds. The family bathroom was big and the roll-top bath was popular! Upstairs the main room with the log burning stove, old fireplace and wooden beams was gorgeous. The photos don't do it justice. Logs were provided for the stove but were not needed as the house was lovely and warm. The kitchen was really well stocked and we thoroughly enjoyed the welcome package. Thanks! Shame we couldn't use the aga but the other oven was fine and we wouldn't know what to do with the aga anyway! The dining table was well big enough for all of us. Great washing machine and tumbler. The cottage is in a nice village. The coop is 5 minutes walk with a few pubs and the chippy a few minutes further. Had some lovely sausages from the butcher and went to the forresters one night for tea. This is a French restaurant and the food was really good. We also had fish and chips one night which were tasty. The local area is beautiful. We visited low force, high force and summerhill force waterfalls which were only 10 minutes drive away. We also went to Weardale Adventure Centre one day which I can highly recommend. We did archery, canoeing and gorge walking. The gorge walking was amazing but not for the faint hearted! Overall we had a fabulous time here and maybe will come back one day. And thanks to the hosts for being so accommodating.

The house has been decorated & equipped to a high standard and is very elegant. The photos do not do it justice. The first floor is open plan, though there are glass panelled doors you can shut off the kitchen with. The snug off the lounge is a lovely addition and full of books, games, puzzles etc. I would say it may not suit visitors with very young children perhaps as the sound from the open plan lounge (TV or chat) can be heard by those downstairs in the bedrooms, but this wasn't an issue for us. The large claw-foot bath in the main bathroom (bath, shower, toilet) is a joy and there is also an en-suite with the master bedroom (shower, toilet) and an additional toilet upstairs. There is a small laundry room too upstairs which was very handy with washer, dryer, drying racks, iron & board etc. It is also a very warm and cosy house, masses of hot water too. There is also a log burner though we didn't need this in August! The small town itself is lovely, 3 or 4 nice cafes, particularly The Teespot, all dog friendly and a few options for dinner out and excellent Fish & Chip shop - we enjoyed the food at the Teesdale Hotel very much (also dog friendly in the bar). There is a large and well stocked Co-op 5 minutes walk away for groceries and a local butcher a few minutes further on which also sells local cheeses, pies etc. It's a great area for walkers and nature explorers, riverside walks & the Pennine Way & Teesdale Railway Path all accessible by foot from the house and masses of other walks locally as well as wonderful country pubs and beautiful villages.

The house was comfortable, spacious and airy which helps when you have 4 couples sharing facilities who have never had a holiday together, despite being friends for a long time. It had everything we needed (except a BBQ - but we can understand the difficulty when there is no garden, as such.) It was a very convenient location to access walking in Teesdale and the small town of Middleton was easy to walk around, if we wanted to eat out or pick up provisions. Parking was a little difficult for 4 cars, but we managed. We would have liked another ensuite or shower - but the overall price reflected the number of facilities very fairly and we recognised that. The property

A delightful, stone-built detached house located on the edge of open fields in Middleton-in-Teesdale, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Conveniently situated on the road into the village, the property has been beautifully refurbished with an unusual upside down design, brimming with character.

Finished to a high standard, it combines contemporary styling, furnishings and fittings with a subtle blend of period features introduced during its conversion.

The open plan living area is a delight with a myriad of A frame beams running the full length of the room, along with exposed stonework, shuttered windows, a beautiful oak floor with cosy underfloor heating and a feature fireplace with woodburner.

French doors from the separate snug lead out to a magnificent decked area with furniture where you can settle with a hearty breakfast and take in the sights and sounds of the surrounding countryside before heading out for an adventure.

The spacious kitchen follows the cottage's country charm theme with a central island and leads to a well equipped utility room.

The first floor also has a twin bedroom and a shower room whilst the ground floor consists of three bedrooms, one with a luxury en-suite, along with a family bathroom and a door leading to an enclosed courtyard.

The surrounding meadowlands provide great walking opportunities, with nearby woodland paths providing the chance to enjoy much of the local wildlife.

Middleton-in-Teesdale offers many local pubs, tea rooms and restaurants, whilst the nearby market town of Barnard Castle, with its cobbled streets and quaint lanes, attracts visitors all year round.

Slightly further afield, the Northern Dales are waiting to be discovered and visits to medieval Raby Castle with its deer park, Bowes Museum, High Force Waterfall and Egglestone Hall Gardens are not to be missed.

A superb retreat to return to after days spent exploring.
