  • "The property is set in a lovely location, views over the golf course draw your eyes to the far hills."

It is peaceful and very relaxing. Property provided the necessities needed, with the exception of towels. The information received from Sykes on confirming our booking was rather ambiguous concerning what towels were needed to be taken. It did say remember to take beach towels and T towels, we did take T towels only to find some provided, as we were not going to the beach we did not take those, only to find no hand or bath towels there. It would have been more accurate to say no towels provided. We visited the Ravensglass and Eskdale railway, had an afternoon tea there, very nice. Also paid a visit to Muncaster Castle, great day out and the raptor centre was brilliant, putting on a super flying display. All in all a fabulous break and the holiday property is a lovely characterful house well worth a visit.

  • "We found the cottage comfortable ,cosy and warm in a peaceful setting."

We had a nice relaxing break however we encountered a few problems i.e door handles came off and were loose, the wi-fi does not work ,toilet in the main bathroom has a faulty cistern and the water pressure dropped in the whole property the second night which prevented the showers from working properly.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I am sorry to hear you had a few maintenance problems during your stay. We are speaking to the property owner to ensure these problems are rectified. I hope these issues did not detract from your enjoyment of your stay in the Lake district. Property Owner

  • "Whilst the property was clean and tidy the attention to maintainance was poor."

I understand things break. I hope all issues are resolved for future visitors...broken toaster, broken bin, broken freezer , toilet not flushing properly , no internet , broken door handles, broken pane of glass , kitchen counter end not fixed in place and the hole in bedroom wall. I received a very small refund as way of apology.

  • "Good points: Nice cottage for a get away from it holiday."

Warm, lots of hot water and good water pressure. Good kitchen with decent set of crockery, cutlery and appliances. Helpful management. Lovely situation with great views and walks you can do without having to drive anywhere. We went to Ravensglass and up onto the nearby fells. Down side: No internet in the house for the whole of our stay. We were given access to the golf clubhouse after a couple of days to use internet but this wasn’t ideal - particularly one evening when it was lashing down and dark. This was disappointing as it was clear that the internet connection hadn’t been functioning for some weeks before we got there. The fridge is tried and appeared to have missing shelves and no light. The dishwasher wasn’t working when we arrived, but was fixed within 24hrs of us reporting the problem.

  • "This is a golfer's paradise."

The course is a little gem and is in wonderful condition. We played nearly every day! The cottage was clean, really well equipped, warm and cosy. Lovely bedding and fluffy towels. A real home from home. It was a pity that there was no internet connection for the duration of our stay but we were able to connect in the golf shop.

  • "Lovely cottage."

Great quiet location apart from the golfists, who would arrive any time from 6:20 am and make a helluva racket outside the bedroom window whilst they get ready. Real shame that the golf carpark is literally right next to the house. Lots of early starts ensued. Comfy rooms. Good showers, loads of space, good kitchen facilities. The kettle needs replacing urgently as it pours about 1/3 of the water down the side rather from the spout. Also, there is a leak in the back twin bedroom roof. Needs fixing before it does loads of damage. If it wasn't for the early morning wakeup calls, we'd be back like a shot. But, as it is, not so much.

  • "Really enjoyed our stay."

Had an issue with the boiler to start which was dealt with quickly. Fridge a bit scruffy and dishwasher door not quite right. Some of the decoration needs attention but overall loved it. With a few minor improvements would have given it full marks. Thanks to everyone who made our stay very enjoyable

  • "Beautiful cottage, fantastic scenery and great hosts."

Thought we would Christmas away this year, and wanted something special and we definitely found it. Plenty to do in and around the area, but also a perfect location if you want to have some down time and just chill. Lovely golf course as well if you want a round. Couldn't fault a thing, 9 year old daughter already wants to book for the summer which I will happily do.

  • "This property is set in a magnificent location, and is a very pretty property close to many holiday amenities such as the fabulous coastal nature reserve and great beach/ famous country park/ historic railway, as well as the Lake District beauty of Wasdale/Wastwater."

There were a couple of glitches with the kitchen - the dishwasher is old and doesn't work very well; and the fridge probably needs replacing too, as it freezes any food contents placed at the back. The internet connection is very unreliable (and non existent upstairs) despite frequent rebooting, so guests should be warned of this, and perhaps an engineer should visit to check/replace the router. The property has good bed linen and towels. There is a second sitting/ playroom which was useful. All of the rooms were generally quite clean, but behind/ under beds and up the stairway was not, with lots of cobwebs. Also the toilet flush valve in the family bathroom overflows every time unless an extra press is applied; something we did not discover immediately, thus wasting water until we did. Given that guests have to vacate by 10am and can't access until 3pm, this should provide ample time for a repair. I have been very specific about glitches because we thought this was such a lovely property, which you would want to present well. However, we wanted to say how much we have enjoyed staying there, with plenty of space and a charming garden, and pleasant views, which we sat in a lot, both morning and evening while the children played; and we even went for a lovely welly walk on the last evening after supper, which was the only rainy one. Sadly, it did pour on the morning of our departure, making loading two vehicles rather difficult, but you can't expect permanent sunshine in the Lake District.

  • "We had a absolutely great time."

The cottage and the setting is just fantastic. With no one else around you there’s a real feeling of remoteness and the views over the golf course are great. Can’t fault the facilities inside at all. Loads of space to swallow up the six adults and three young children. Great kitchen and excellent dual utility rooms, a great added space for storing wellies, bikes and other outdoor gear. Having the second living room was nice but we didn’t use it as much as expected, mainly down to the main living room being a really great central point for us all to hang out In front of the fire. Bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs great. A huge thank you to Nikki for being so flexible and happy to change the dates for us with no difficulty. Especially given the short notice. Our original dates would have meant that we wouldn’t have been able to attend (our son born 6 weeks early!) it’s just a shame that Sykes charged us £35 for a very simple administrative change. Would certainly recommend the cottage to anyone considering a visit to West Cumbria. We would book again but as I understand it’s been changed to not allow pets in the future. Thanks a lot, Matt

The property

Eskdale Green 5.3 miles.

In a little-known area of the Lake District, near to the River Esk, is the village of Ravenglass, where you can find this mid-Victorian property, as beautiful and classic on the inside as the outside, High Eskholme.

Ideally suited to be a home-from-home for a larger family, or somewhere to host a reunion of old friends ready to take on the peaks in the Lakes.

Once you have pulled up to this idyllic property, head indoors, stepping onto the flagstone floor with the first room on your left being the snug, perfect for nestling down with a good book for some quiet time.

Further along the hall is the main sitting room, where you can light up the open fire on a cold evening and feel as though you've gone back in time in this historic building, while using the Sky TV package to decide on the evening's entertainment.

Keep up with tradition and sit around the dining table for dinner, lovingly prepared in the stylish kitchen with a range of integrated fittings and appliances at your fingertips.

Take a few steps down from the kitchen/diner into the boot room to find the utility room next door containing the washing machine and the back door leading out to the fantastic garden.

Overlooking the golf course, the garden is lawned and bordered by luscious trees; you can sit and look on as the little ones take pleasure in exploring and running around.

When the night draws in, move upstairs to find the well-presented bedrooms, comprising of a master bedroom with double bed and en-suite bathroom and two twin rooms, served by a shower room, all benefiting from storage for your belongings and light and bright decor.

A few miles down the road to the centre of Ravenglass will take you to the nearest pub, or if you are after more choice in restaurants and eateries, you can drive around 30 minutes south to Millom or 30 minutes north to Whitehaven for supermarkets, shops, pubs and restaurants.

Your main activity of your holiday will probably involve walking boots, so make sure not to forget them!

Set out finding a route that would suit you best; there are many light walks along the River Esk, or for the more experienced who like a challenge, take one of the routes up the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike.

High Eskholme is a wonderful family home perfect for enjoying the delights of the Lake District.

About the location

ESKDALE GREEN

Coniston 10 miles.

The small village of Eskdale Green sits amongst beautiful Lakeland countryside and consists of a scattering of cottages, some farm dwellings and a number of outstanding traditional English pubs serving good food. An area relatively unknown to many Lakeland visitors, this great location boasts a skyline dominated by the towering peaks of Scafell - England's highest peak, as well as Great Gable, Hard Knott, Harter Fell and Muncaster Fell, whilst the nearby stunning valleys of Eskdale, Wasdale, Ennerdale and Dunnerdale provide breathtaking and ever-changing scenery to be enjoyed throughout the year. The valley is notable as being one of few major valleys in the Lake District not to have its own lake, although several tarns are perched above the valley sides. Local attractions include Muncaster Castle, the World Owl Centre and the Ravenglass to Eskdale miniature railway, one of the most beautiful train journeys imaginable. With both beautiful Wastwater - the deepest lake in the country and St Olaf's - the smallest church, amongst the many well known landmarks in this awe inspiring and beautiful area also within easy reach, this stunning location will have visitors returning time and time again.
