    “Absolute gem of a cottage!”

What a gem of a cottage – Chester House has been newly renovated to a really high specification, spotlessly clean and has absolutely everything you need for your time there - tucked away on the side on the hill just out of Westgate overlooking the village, it is remote enough to let you feel you are in the middle of nowhere but still close enough to civilisation. The views of the Weardale valley below are amazing and probably best taken from the conservatory (where the underfloor ground source heating is absolutely spot on if it’s a bit chilly outside). The layout works well with a bedroom and a bathroom downstairs and with a further 3 bedrooms and a fantastic main bathroom, again with fantastic views all upstairs. All the rooms are spacious and well laid out although the bunk bed might be a bit high for smaller children. Whilst it was chilly during our stay we didn’t really need to use the log burners as the temperature from the ground source heating kept everything at a constant temperature. For those who enjoy walking there are some really good walks right on the doorstep – we were a family of 6 (a 20 year old, two 14 year olds and a 9 year old) and also our dog – all enjoyed the stay and walking the surrounding countryside taking in the views. We did some of the smaller walks but there are so many places to explore round and about. There is a pub in the village of Westgate which is approx. 0.5 miles downhill from the cottage which also serves food but you’ll probably need to book in advance as it gets booked quickly, especially on a Sunday – nearest shops are Stanhope (5 miles) where there is also a good chippy and for the bigger shops we went to Consett, which is about 15 miles drive. If you love this part of the country this is an ideal place to stay – would definitely recommend Derwent Reservoir, High Force Waterfall and Barnard Castle as places to visit.
