  • "A fabulous house in a beautiful location."

Excellent WiFi given the rural location which allowed a guest to work from home during our stay. Lisa provided a lovely welcome and was on hand for queries. The welcome prosecco and chocolates were a lovely touch.

Thanks Ali for your lovely review - we loved having you to stay at Chester House & look forward to welcome you guys again soon Property Owner

  • "This is a beautiful house in an amazing location with fantastic views."

We arrived very late and were messaged by the owner and another lady offering to give us a virtual tour, which we didn’t need but this was very welcoming of them. Unfortunately there was some damp in the house and the rolled up towels were also damp- there were patches of plaster on the walls in different areas but still it was a lovely house. Not perhaps ‘decorated to a very high standard’ as mentioned in the details. I think we would have been happy to leave things as they were but the day before we left one of our party broke a glass lampshade on her head in the bathroom (there are 3 glass lampshades at head height in the bathroom). Despite contacting the lady who had offered to show us round (Lisa) and explaining what had happened and being reassured that this would be sorted, not a problem, I then received a message and photos of the damage on my Sykes account with a message that suggested the damage had not been reported and was a surprise. Obviously we are happy to pay for the damage but the incongruous responses my friend and I have had, have left us feeling very disappointed about the experience and we feel that communication between‘Lisa’ and whoever owns the place need to be improved. We enjoyed the hot tub immensely and showers were really good. One suggestion would be to have blinds fitted in the sky lights in the 3 bedrooms upstairs as we had a 4 yr old who woke up v early because of the light in the morning. The area was lovely and the village of west gate is delightful as was the pub in the village. We had a meal in the pub in Eastgate (cross keys pub) which was great value and the biking trails in Hamsterley were also really good. We also enjoyed a dip in the outdoor pool in Stanhope.

The decor throughout the main house was nice especially the main bathroom, lounge and kitchen. Arrival treats were a welcome addition, it was also great to have the option of the chef service and the food was excellent on both nights we used this service. The hot tub and the summer house it's located in are lovely, it added another great dimension to the holiday and the robes and slippers were a nice touch also. Although the house itself is quite remote it was a great location for exploring the area we visited High Force, Beamish Living Museum , Durham which were all really good

  • "We absolutely loved our stay at Chester House."

The house itself is remote, however there is lots to do in the local areas. The scenery was outstanding and the house was decorated to a high spec. The rooms were very comfy and spacious. We stayed at the house as 2 families and the kids got the most out of the garden and the outdoor space. There were little touches that made the stay more comfortable, such as a coffee machine with enough coffee pods for the week, along with enough washing and cleaning equipment (such as washing up liquid/ washing powder), towels etc for the week. Any questions or requests were answered promptly. We would definitely like to return to the house for future holidays.

It is ideally positioned for exploring the area with walks nearby. Durham and Beamish Museum are both within an hours drive away. The property is very well equipped, especially the kitchen, which isn't always the case with larger properties. Communication with the owners has been excellent, all in all an excellent week, the hot tub was very popular!!

We used Chef John for Afternoon Tea and an evening meal which were both fabulous. Everyone enjoyed the Hot Tub. We took a couple of bikes and enjoyed a few route's as the areas roads are not too busy. We hope to return, thanks to Karen!

We enjoyed a meal at the Golden Lion which was in a nearby village and had an indian takeaway which was delicious.Robes and slippers for the hot tub were supplied which were appreciated. • "Wow! That was our reaction as we drove up the hill and saw Chester House."

We were looking for a perfect little hideaway to celebrate a big birthday and also get away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and that's exactly what we got! The house is set in stunning surroundings and VERY private! There's everything you need from a fully supplied kitchen to a HUGE hot tub just outside the back door. Karen, our host, has been great and very quick to come back with answers to any queries we had pre arrival and while we were there. We enjoyed the Slitt Wood walk (on Karen's recommendation) and then enjoyed some chill out time at the house, perfect! We also took advantage of Chef John who cooked us our evening meal on Saturday night at the house including some of the best cheese cakes we've ever eaten! We also had afternoon tea on Sunday, again prepared by Chef John, which has to be THE best afternoon tea we've ever had the pleasure of eating. The homebaking was incredible and we were able to take some home with us on the Monday to enjoy when we got home! If you're looking for a quiet, out of the way getaway with access to walks whilst still being close to some good sized places for amenities and shops then Chester House is ideal. Thanks Karen and Chef John for making our stay and birthday celebration so special. Looking forward to staying again in the future.

Beautiful location and lovely high spec finish throughout Property. Karen the owner was lovely, she communicated with me brilliantly, first welcoming us, a virtual tour on arrival to organising Chef John to prepare us a beautiful afternoon tea. The only down side is that it’s up a really steep hill so would definitely visit property again but only in Summer months.

  • "Chester House is in the lovely village of Westgate, which has a great pub called the Hare and Hounds - sunday roast is great and the pub itself feels really safe during these uneasy times of Covid."

We booked in advance, all our temperatures were taken on arrival, menus were cleaned after we touched them and staff got our carvery for us. Another good local pub is the Cross keys in Eastgate. There are some great walks from Chester house, particularly Slit Woods. The house itself is a great base for the Weardale area. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked with pans and crockery etc. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and much appreciated. Unfortunately I do have a few negatives but it might just be me being picky. The house sleeps 8 yet there are only 6 seats at the dining table, all 8 guests couldn't sit in the living room or conservatory at the same time either, which we found a bit odd. We felt that the cleaners were a bit hit and miss too; the upstairs bathroom was dirty when we arrived and the hot tub was full of dead flies. I also think if staying somewhere for a week with a hot tub, it should be cleaned during the stay - I would have been happy to do this if provided with the equipment. The gardens are lovely and we enjoyed sitting out and also having a family game of quick cricket. Having a meal cooked by Chef John is a must! All in all, we had a fantastic time and would recommend.

  • "This was our second visit to this amazing house."

It is beautiful inside and out and in a fantastic location for exploring the local area with incredible views. There are woodburning stoves in both the kitchen and living room but I guarantee you would only need them on the coldest of winter nights as the underfloor heating throughout keeps a lovely constant temperature. It has all the pots and pans you could ever need and plenty of room to get 16 round the dining table. All the bedrooms are well furnished with comfy beds and a little hanging storage. Both bathrooms are gorgeous, especially the upstairs with its free standing bath in the window. The Wi-fi is spot on so if you have kids that ask for the password the minute you check in anywhere you won't have any problems. Unusual for somewhere so remote! I have to agree with some of the other reviews on here that this is probably the best holiday let we have ever stayed in and we will definitely be back. A 4 wheel drive is handy (but by no means essential) as the drive is a little bumpy, but if you take it slow its fine. If I had to be super picky the only thing it needs is some larger bath sheet towels. Sorry.

Thank you for such a lovely holiday. As the main cook, I so appreciated things like the weighing scales, measuring jugs and good non stick pan (often things missing in holiday homes). The view was stunning in the place and we loved going for walks from Chester house through the local countryside. The pub was a great distance away (1/2 mile away), but down a steep hill, so be ready for the steep hill up on the way back. We enjoyed sitting in the conservatory looking out at the view, and we all loved seeing new lambs appearing over the week as they were born and chatting to the local farmer who has the most lovely sheep dog!
