"A fabulous house in a beautiful location."
Excellent WiFi given the rural location which allowed a guest to work from home during our stay. Lisa provided a lovely welcome and was on hand for queries. The welcome prosecco and chocolates were a lovely touch.
Thanks Ali for your lovely review - we loved having you to stay at Chester House & look forward to welcome you guys again soon Property Owner
"This is a beautiful house in an amazing location with fantastic views."
We arrived very late and were messaged by the owner and another lady offering to give us a virtual tour, which we didn’t need but this was very welcoming of them. Unfortunately there was some damp in the house and the rolled up towels were also damp- there were patches of plaster on the walls in different areas but still it was a lovely house. Not perhaps ‘decorated to a very high standard’ as mentioned in the details. I think we would have been happy to leave things as they were but the day before we left one of our party broke a glass lampshade on her head in the bathroom (there are 3 glass lampshades at head height in the bathroom). Despite contacting the lady who had offered to show us round (Lisa) and explaining what had happened and being reassured that this would be sorted, not a problem, I then received a message and photos of the damage on my Sykes account with a message that suggested the damage had not been reported and was a surprise. Obviously we are happy to pay for the damage but the incongruous responses my friend and I have had, have left us feeling very disappointed about the experience and we feel that communication between‘Lisa’ and whoever owns the place need to be improved. We enjoyed the hot tub immensely and showers were really good. One suggestion would be to have blinds fitted in the sky lights in the 3 bedrooms upstairs as we had a 4 yr old who woke up v early because of the light in the morning. The area was lovely and the village of west gate is delightful as was the pub in the village. We had a meal in the pub in Eastgate (cross keys pub) which was great value and the biking trails in Hamsterley were also really good. We also enjoyed a dip in the outdoor pool in Stanhope.
"Lovely property, shame the weather was terrible."
Still got in the hot tub though!!Great communication from Karen, thank you very much.
"Lovely place would definitely come back"
"We had a wonderful Christmas week away at chester house."
Everything about it was just perfect for our getaway. House has everything you need. The hot tub was fantastic! Karen the owner was very helpful and left a lovely welcome basket complete with treats for our dog! A trip to nearby high force waterfalls on Christmas Eve was much enjoyed. The perfect week was topped off by snow on boxing day! A white Christmas after all! Would definitely recommend!
"What an amazing house and surrounding area."
Satnav took us straight too it! Very impressed with the whole house from start to finish and everything we hoped and imagined - and more. The house is done out lovely and had everything we needed. Karen, the owner, was very helpful from start to finish with constant contact as and when needed. Would love to return and would definitely recommend for a visit.
"Loved the house had everything we needed Amazing location we had a really fab family holiday xx"
"We had a wonderful week at Chester cottage ,with our grown up children and partners."
The property was everything we wanted and more.Very comfortable, clean and the kitchen / diner was an great area to all spend time in together. We used the hot tub everyday, loved the fairy lights and Alexa set up.There were lots of little extra touches that really made the stay ,for us the Dolce gusto coffee machine and pods were a bonus. The location is stunning ,and ideal for walking and exploring this beautiful area. Karen, the host was very helpful and made sure our stay went smoothly. We will definitely return.
"We had a fab week at Chester House and would certainly consider staying again if we were holidaying in the area."
The decor throughout the main house was nice especially the main bathroom, lounge and kitchen. Arrival treats were a welcome addition, it was also great to have the option of the chef service and the food was excellent on both nights we used this service. The hot tub and the summer house it's located in are lovely, it added another great dimension to the holiday and the robes and slippers were a nice touch also. Although the house itself is quite remote it was a great location for exploring the area we visited High Force, Beamish Living Museum , Durham which were all really good
"We absolutely loved our stay at Chester House."
The house itself is remote, however there is lots to do in the local areas. The scenery was outstanding and the house was decorated to a high spec. The rooms were very comfy and spacious. We stayed at the house as 2 families and the kids got the most out of the garden and the outdoor space. There were little touches that made the stay more comfortable, such as a coffee machine with enough coffee pods for the week, along with enough washing and cleaning equipment (such as washing up liquid/ washing powder), towels etc for the week. Any questions or requests were answered promptly. We would definitely like to return to the house for future holidays.
"Chester house is a fabulous property in an amazing location, with outstanding countryside views."
It is ideally positioned for exploring the area with walks nearby. Durham and Beamish Museum are both within an hours drive away. The property is very well equipped, especially the kitchen, which isn't always the case with larger properties. Communication with the owners has been excellent, all in all an excellent week, the hot tub was very popular!!
"Was wonderful to finaly get the family together after lockdown."
The House is quite remote which was perfect for us. There's lovely views across Weardale. The beds and furnishings are all quite new . We used Chef John for Afternoon Tea and an evening meal which were both fabulous. Everyone enjoyed the Hot Tub. We took a couple of bikes and enjoyed a few route's as the areas roads are not too busy. We hope to return, thanks to Karen!
"Had a wonderful family holiday in Chester House."
The house is very homely and has everything you need in the kitchen to enjoy cooking meals. Chef John cooked us an evening meal which was a real treat and we highly recommend him.Karen was very helpful with any queries. There are some good walks from the cottage. We enjoyed a meal at the Golden Lion which was in a nearby village and had an indian takeaway which was delicious.Robes and slippers for the hot tub were supplied which were appreciated. The most amazing thing are the views from the cottage which can be enjoyed whatever the weather.
"Wow! That was our reaction as we drove up the hill and saw Chester House."
We were looking for a perfect little hideaway to celebrate a big birthday and also get away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and that's exactly what we got! The house is set in stunning surroundings and VERY private! There's everything you need from a fully supplied kitchen to a HUGE hot tub just outside the back door. Karen, our host, has been great and very quick to come back with answers to any queries we had pre arrival and while we were there. We enjoyed the Slitt Wood walk (on Karen's recommendation) and then enjoyed some chill out time at the house, perfect! We also took advantage of Chef John who cooked us our evening meal on Saturday night at the house including some of the best cheese cakes we've ever eaten! We also had afternoon tea on Sunday, again prepared by Chef John, which has to be THE best afternoon tea we've ever had the pleasure of eating. The homebaking was incredible and we were able to take some home with us on the Monday to enjoy when we got home! If you're looking for a quiet, out of the way getaway with access to walks whilst still being close to some good sized places for amenities and shops then Chester House is ideal. Thanks Karen and Chef John for making our stay and birthday celebration so special. Looking forward to staying again in the future.
"Relaxing week spent in this beautiful property, the standard of finish in the house is outstanding, modern, well finished and at the same time retaining a country charm."
The views from the garden are outstanding and we really intend to return in summer months when the weather hopefully will be kinder. Regardless of the weather the hot tub is always usable and a lovely addition. The owners are Friendly, helpful and informative all whilst maintaining social distance in these times. We had an amazing afternoon tea for a birthday, such lovely food and great value
"What a beautiful and relaxing week we had."
Stunning views and excellent facilities
"We’ve just returned from our 2nd family holiday to Chester House, such a beautiful tranquil home."
Luxury home from home in such peaceful surroundings. Everything we need is on hand, once again we didn’t want to leave. Special memories. Thank you.
"We had a fabulous stay in Chester House."
Beautiful location and lovely high spec finish throughout Property. Karen the owner was lovely, she communicated with me brilliantly, first welcoming us, a virtual tour on arrival to organising Chef John to prepare us a beautiful afternoon tea. The only down side is that it’s up a really steep hill so would definitely visit property again but only in Summer months.
"Chester House is in the lovely village of Westgate, which has a great pub called the Hare and Hounds - sunday roast is great and the pub itself feels really safe during these uneasy times of Covid."
We booked in advance, all our temperatures were taken on arrival, menus were cleaned after we touched them and staff got our carvery for us. Another good local pub is the Cross keys in Eastgate. There are some great walks from Chester house, particularly Slit Woods. The house itself is a great base for the Weardale area. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked with pans and crockery etc. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and much appreciated. Unfortunately I do have a few negatives but it might just be me being picky. The house sleeps 8 yet there are only 6 seats at the dining table, all 8 guests couldn't sit in the living room or conservatory at the same time either, which we found a bit odd. We felt that the cleaners were a bit hit and miss too; the upstairs bathroom was dirty when we arrived and the hot tub was full of dead flies. I also think if staying somewhere for a week with a hot tub, it should be cleaned during the stay - I would have been happy to do this if provided with the equipment. The gardens are lovely and we enjoyed sitting out and also having a family game of quick cricket. Having a meal cooked by Chef John is a must! All in all, we had a fantastic time and would recommend.
"Host was very attentive and available to answer any concerns The cottage was amazing and so comfortable ; a real home from home."
The views were outstanding and a great place to recharge
"Chester House was a lovely remote cottage that was very comfortable with a lovely bathroom with stunning views across the valley and lovely tiled shower room on the ground floor."
Kitchen was well equipped with essential utensils, crockery & pots & pans. Lovely touches by the owner when we arrived, who kept in touch with us when we need her help making sure we were alright and dealing with our dilemma.
"An absolutely stunning house with some beautiful features throughout, the industrial light bulbs throught the hallway and the bathroom being particular favourites for me!"
Very rural and tranquil setting perched in the hills with stunning views, and a lovely pub in the village not far away. The owners were also very helpful and accommodating, and there to answer any questions, although we didn't have to ask anything as it was all in the guest book on arrival. Would definitely recommend for a family get together. The high force waterfalls nearby are also a must see!
"Beautiful cottage, with brilliant features and the most amazing views."
We had everything we needed for a brilliant family holiday. Cottage was lovely and toasty warm the entire stay. The kitchen was very well equipped. The lounge comfortable and cosy and the main bathroom is amazing. A luxury home away from home with very welcoming hosts.
"A lovely house with stunning views of Weardale."
Easily the best equipped house we have ever stayed in and a credit to the owners. The owners were very proactive, and sorted any minor issues immediately. They remained in touch throughout our stay and we felt we were important to them. Highly recommended and we can’t wait to return!
"We have just returned from a family holiday celebrating our mother & fathers 50th Wedding Anniversary."
What an absolutely beautiful house and grounds/scenery, it was just perfect, everything definitely exceeded our expectations and we have already booked again for next year. Thank you Karen & Mark x
"This was our second visit to this amazing house."
It is beautiful inside and out and in a fantastic location for exploring the local area with incredible views. There are woodburning stoves in both the kitchen and living room but I guarantee you would only need them on the coldest of winter nights as the underfloor heating throughout keeps a lovely constant temperature. It has all the pots and pans you could ever need and plenty of room to get 16 round the dining table. All the bedrooms are well furnished with comfy beds and a little hanging storage. Both bathrooms are gorgeous, especially the upstairs with its free standing bath in the window. The Wi-fi is spot on so if you have kids that ask for the password the minute you check in anywhere you won't have any problems. Unusual for somewhere so remote! I have to agree with some of the other reviews on here that this is probably the best holiday let we have ever stayed in and we will definitely be back. A 4 wheel drive is handy (but by no means essential) as the drive is a little bumpy, but if you take it slow its fine. If I had to be super picky the only thing it needs is some larger bath sheet towels. Sorry.
"Chester House has been lovingly modernised and is in a spectacular position overlooking Weardale, surrounded by fields full of sheep and bird life."
There is a lovely little garden enclosed by drystone walls. The interior of the house has been improved to a really high standard. Very comfortable. We were welcomed personally by the owners and had a memorable and invigorating stay. Just wonderful!
"Chester House is a beautiful, well equipped house in a wonderful location."
Perfect for a relaxing and peaceful holiday with plenty of lovely walks and loads of wildlife to watch. Lots of nice shops and places to eat and drink locally (within 5 miles) and Stanhope swimming pool worth a visit. Our 2 weeks here went far to quickly! Karen and Mark are such friendly hosts with nothing being to much trouble. The welcome gifts were such a lovely touch. We will definitely be booking another stay. Thank you for a brilliant holiday.
"This is a great hide-away, well equipped and beautifully maintained."
"We really loved staying here and it was great for 6 of us (with two adult size boys staying in the twin bedded room)."
Thank you for such a lovely holiday. As the main cook, I so appreciated things like the weighing scales, measuring jugs and good non stick pan (often things missing in holiday homes). The view was stunning in the place and we loved going for walks from Chester house through the local countryside. The pub was a great distance away (1/2 mile away), but down a steep hill, so be ready for the steep hill up on the way back. We enjoyed sitting in the conservatory looking out at the view, and we all loved seeing new lambs appearing over the week as they were born and chatting to the local farmer who has the most lovely sheep dog!
"A fantastic house in a beautiful setting."
Waking up to countryside views each morning was lovely. A very tranquil location for total relaxation. The house itself was warm, very well equipped and spacious. A gorgeous bathroom and wonderful lighting was the cherry on top. Very friendly and helpful owners who really care that you enjoy your stay. I would highly recommend.
