  • "We enjoyed our stay at this comfortable, well-equipped cottage."

The location is ideal for exploring the south Lakes, but does lack local shops/pubs. The only place to eat in High Newton is far too expensive £45 for lunch, £95 for dinner!!). We would happily stay there again.

  • "The cottage was damp and dirty, we'd read the previous reviews so we had anticipated this."

There was rubbish piled up outside and as we were there for two weeks we talked to the bin men - they won't take it because it is recycling which is incorrectly sorted. We had contacted Sykes three times before we went because the reviews were worrying, while we were driving to the cottage they contacted us about it. But we were already on our way and there are no other cottages available so we spent the first couple of days cleaning. There were two hoovers in the cottage, both were choked up. There were no cleaning materials and not even any salt and pepper let alone a tea bag or a dishwasher tablet. We stayed for two weeks but hadn't been told there would be no cleaner in the middle, no clean sheets or towels. All in all it was disappointing because the cottage is well situated. The garden is sunny but there are only two safe chairs - I went through the seat of one of the others and I only weigh nine stone.

  • "Despite contacting you the week before our stay with concerns after reading negative reviews about the damp and the cleanliness of the cottage, we weren’t forewarned that there actually is a damp issue - damp patches on the walls and carpet, a bit of a musty smell in some of the rooms, and a dehumidifier running."

I also replied to the “welcome” email mentioning all of this and got no response. If we’d have known beforehand it wouldn’t have been as unacceptable, or at least we could have chosen to book a different cottage. The beds aren’t the most comfortable, but that’s probably down to personal preference and if you like flat pillows and a firm mattress you’ll be ok; I’m glad we took pillows after reading similar reviews. The rest of the cottage is great - it’s a lovely quiet location, it’s roomy and cosy, it’s well equipped in the kitchen. But the damp was an issue, and there were areas that could do with a good clean i.e., dusty, grubby skirting boards and kitchen cupboards. Such a shame for what could be the perfect Lakes cottage.

  • "Beautiful cottage in a nice quiet area but not too far from Windermere (10 minutes away) Kitchen was fantastic, especially the range cooker and the pans."

Fully kitted out kitchen. The cottage was fairly clean but there was quite a lot of dog hairs from a previous visitor. I was not too bothered by this as I knew it was a dog friendly cottage. Very spacious cottage and nice large bathroom. All bedrooms were large and spacious but could do with new mattresses as all were very hard. Also the pillows were all flat and hard so new pillows are also required. Nice garden area with plenty of room for table and chairs and a nice BBQ. The weather was kind to us and would definitely recommend this cottage.

  • "Lovely cottage, just slightly misleading as to the proximity of pubs."

Great location for driving out and about.

  • "The general cleanliness of the house was extremely poor."

The condition of the house is tired with a severe dampness problem and an extremely strong odour that taints your clothes. It was not a comfortable environment to live or sleep in. Refuse was overflowing on arrival - not a welcome site. The garden could have been an escape from the property but unfortunately was overgrown with dated furniture oh and a lovely old mop left lying for good measure. As this was our main summer holiday and bearing in mind covid cleanliness ,this house was most certainly not up to scratch and not worth in excess of £1000.00 that we paid. Really need to question what level of inspection is carried out and the extent of a Covid ‘deep clean’

  • "The cottage smelt very strongly of damp especially downstairs, it was so pungent even your bags and coats smelt of it."

At £845 per week this was not good enough. Only over come by leaving windows open 24hours a day.

  • "Last week I got married in The Lakes and I booked the Glendene so I could stay here with my wedding party."

There’s more than enough room for 6 people and one of the sofas in the lounge even pulls out to a sofa bed which was great when guests didn’t want to share rooms. The cottage is lovely and cosy and very typical for the Lakes. The garden was brilliant and super secure if you are planning on taking a dog. There’s some steps in the garden which I wasn’t aware of and were a bit tricky for someone who was disabled and staying at the cottage - it would have been good to know about the steps in advance. The cottage had everything you needed for a stay from an iron to towels. The village that the cottage is in is really quiet but a great base to explore the Lakes. The only improvement would be to change the kitchen crockery, cuterwly and pots and pans. They were all mismatched and it felt like a lot of people had left items and were being used as the standard items rather than being replaced once items had broken. All in all - definitely recommend this cottage for a lush stage in the Lakes.

  • "House wasn't particularly clean."

There were cobwebs in kitchen cupboards, some floors were dusty, dog feces in the back garden. In my opinion I wouldn't have called the garage secure bike storage and we couldn't get the back door of it to lock. Had there been something to secure the bikes to this would have been OK as we had brought a chain. Beds were uncomfortable with cheap mattresses band the middle room needs the mattress replacing. One side had a 'hole' in it and when we flipped it the levels of staining were worse than any hostel bed I've used! Internet, washer and stair gates were a nice touch, as well as the coffee machine and quality pans.

  • "The cottage was lovely."

A very quiet village and within easy reach of most places.Ideal for a family but steep steps to a small garden area,The beds are very hard so if like us you want a softer bed take a topper.
