  • "Such a lovely cottage in a beautiful village."

Very cosy indeed and well kitted out. It would’ve helped, though, if there had been stronger warning in the publicity, blurb that parking would be so very difficult, and that there was no garden . (maybe this was written on the listing somewhere and we just missed it ). Also, that one of the beds was very tiny. However, none of these things would prevent us from wanting to go again!

  • "We had a wonderful stay at Croft End cottage."

Having stayed in the village before we were aware of its fantastic location. The cottage was perfectly suited for us. It was very clean and well equipped. The only criticisms were the lack of logs for the open fire. We were aware that logs would not be provided, but having stayed in many similar Lake District properties, most provide at least a few logs initially. Also the property was cold upon our arrival. The only other fault was that the induction cooker hob was not working. That said we've rarely used that type of hob before and it may have been user error as opposed to a fault, but we followed the instructions carefully and could not get it to work.

  • "The property is in a beautiful location is pretty comfortable and has pretty much everything you need."

A big disappointment was that on our arrival at 4pm on a December evening it was freezing cold. When the main heating comes from storage heaters it would be nice if they could be turned on the day before or even if a decent amount of fuel could be left to make fire. A little more information regarding the heating would also have been useful as we had no idea about the storage heaters until we phoned the Lakelovers office. The information file and pinboard also need some major updating. There is no milk left automatically as per the leaflet on the pinboard and there is no wood/kindling sold just round the corner either. We were only eventually able to warm ourselves up the first evening when we found a small oil heater in the upstairs cupboard. Access to the garage is quite tight but we were able to park in the National Trust car park all week with no issues. Apart from the heating we had a lovely week.

  • "We have stayed at Croft End several times but not since the pandemic."

There are a couple of things we think the owners need to be aware of. - towel rail in bathroom not working. This meant the bathroom was absolutely freezing as it’s the only source of heat in there - heater on landing not working - bathroom bin broken - blind in bathroom is filthy with unexplainable stains on it

Thank you for your feedback. We are so pleased you chose to visit Croft End again. Thank you for bringing the small issues to our attention. The bathroom heater is switched on using a switch on the landing and automatically times out after being on for a set period for environmental reasons. We will ask the maintenance team to resolve the problems with the landing heater . We hope to welcome you back to Croft End soon. Property Owner

Clean and includes everything you could need for a holiday. Parking is a bit of an issue as the national trust car park can’t be used in the daytime and our car wouldn’t fit in the garage.

It is difficult to get it to retract completely. I have stayed in this cottage a few times and the door has always been like this. Needs attention.

  • "Croft End is a beautiful cottage in a delightful setting."

We were very comfortable and loved the location in the village with walks from our doorstep. Sadly the weather was unseasonably cold and wet during the week of our stay so we really appreciated all the facilities the cottage had to offer and worked our way through a great collection of films. The garage was a little tight for our car but the National Trust carpark was very handy for overnight parking. We really couldn't fault anything and hope to return sometime.

  • "It is clear to us that the owners have taken previous reviews on board."

The cottage was clean and tidy, the facilities all that you would need on this type of holiday and we had the benefit of enjoying the comfort of a new carpet, sofa and armchair. It was great for two of us and our dog. To be clear for future users, there is no secure area for a dog and nowhere to park close to the property. Parking overnight was in the National Trust Car Park. All of which is manageable. Really enjoyed our break and as a bonus enjoyed the selection of cakes for sale (£1 per slice) opposite the cottage.

Thank you for your feedback! We are glad you enjoyed your stay and the new sofas! There is parking for a medium sized car in the garage at the back of the property or you can make use of the small car park next to the village playground a short walk from the property should you need it. • "Croft End Cottage was everything that had been promised, a perfect bolt hole for the two of us and our dog."

The cottage was so cosy to come back to after a day out exploring, and the 2 minute walk up to the Tower Bank Arms in the evening wasn’t too taxing, although a torch is definitely needed. Everywhere was immaculately clean and the kitchen had everything needed for our long weekend. Although the open fire is a lovely addition we actually didn’t need to light it as the storage heaters throughout kept the cottage very warm and comfortable, even in mid November. The only minor downfall were the sofas, unfortunately these were not as comfortable as they could have been and we argued who was going to end up with the low sofa and who got the hard sofa, but it was only a minor thing and didn’t detract from a really lovely weekend. Would we return to Croft End Cottage ? .... Most definitely, yes.

Thank you for your feedback. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We have now replaced the old sofas and have provided a torch on the coat hooks next to the back door for your use. We hope to welcome you again soon! Property Owner

  • "Lovely location, accommodation fine, but was not particularly clean and lacks some tlc."

The living room area needed vacuuming. There was cereal left in a bowl, kitchen side was sticky and crumbs in places. There was no hand sanitizer, apart from a handbag size, no anti bacterial soap in the kitchen or the bathroom. Some of the kitchen equipment was broken. The sofas were particularly uncomfortable, on one sofa the cushions had completely gone, you felt as though you were sitting on the floor! The other sofa was hard, and narrow. The scatter cushions were grubby, food stuck to them and need cleaning or replacing. There is damp and mould on the window sill in the dining area. We arrived on a wet November evening, it would have been a nice touch if there logs for the fire, most cottages we have stayed in provide enough for the first couple of nights. Especially during Covid we would have expected it to be cleaner, there is really no excuse. Upstairs was fine and comfortable.

It was clean and well equipped. The location was amazing, It was easy to get to, ( apart from the ferry charges, £5, per crossing, both directions, is excessive). We found everyone to be friendly and wanting to ensure you had a great time. The scenery was breathtakingly stunning and could only help you relax. We were there a week, could have done with two, as there are so many fantastic things to see and do, while there. Would I recommend it? Most definitely.

  • "Such a lovely cottage, small but perfectly formed!"

It is beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and has everything you could possibly need for a holiday in The Lakes. Tucked away in a really quiet road with delicious homemade cakes for sale every day from the house opposite. Beautiful walks from the door, great pub round the corner and Esthwaite a few minutes away. We’ll be back!

  • "On arrival the property wasn’t very clean, especially in the kitchen, which was a shame as the cottage was lovely."

No enclosed area/garden, (even though a garden is mentioned in the facility listing) just a patio area outside the kitchen door which meant our dog had to be kept on her lead outside. The cottage is in a great position to explore the area with lots a of great walks and places to visit. Hill Top is a 5 minute walk away, the pub, Tower Bank Arms even closer, the stew and dumplings are highly recommended. The cakes sold by the house opposite are also highly recommended with a cuppa after a day of walking and exploring. Overall a great place to stay.

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate the time taken to send your observations. We have now discussed with the our housekeeping team the cleanliness issues you found in the kitchen at the property, this falls below our usual standards, please accept our apologies. Thank you once again for your feedback and we do hope to see you again in the future. Property Owner

About the location

SAWREY

Hawkshead 2 miles.

The village of Sawrey is situated two miles from Hawkshead down the eastern side of Esthwaite Water, overlooked by the woods and tarns of Claife Heights. Sawrey consists of two separate hamlets - Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey - both with a cluster of picturesque cottages, tea rooms and pubs. Near Sawrey is famous for Hill Top, the 17th century farmhouse where Beatrix Potter wrote her acclaimed children's stories. Now a museum, owned and run by the National Trust, Hill Top is one of the most visited houses in the Lake District. Far Sawrey is the hamlet furthest away from Hawkshead and the nearest to the ferry point on Windermere. It offers a church and pub/restaurant with a beer garden. There are good walks in the area, including those to Claife Heights and in Grizedale Forest. It's also a great base for enjoying a wide variety of typical Lakeland pursuits - with watersports close at hand on Lake Windermere, fishing on nearby Esthwaite Water and, of course, fell walking.

No babies or children under 5 years of age.
Please note: Logs are not provided but can be purchased from the coop in Hawkshead.
