  • "A great place for 2 and a dog!"

Massively relaxing and very welcoming. Great walks from the door and despite almost persistent rain did manage a couple of dry walks - and one of two wet ones too! The Tower Bank Arms is a fantastic pub - large helpings of good quality food but must book well in advance as it's not that big. Other excellent restaurants in Ambleside - the Doi Intanon great for Thai and the Old Stamp House for a 'posher' meal. For a rainy day a visit to the 'Pencil Museum' in Keswick is great fun - and they're not short of pencils! *Not for the review but we needed something sending to the cottage and used the address given in your pre holiday information. There is more than one Lakefield Cottage in Near Sawrey so would advise adding Ees Wyke to the address to ensure delivery. Luckily intercepted the postie who told us where he had delivered our item.

Dear Richard Thank you for your kind comments. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Lakefield Cottage - even though the weather was not the best - and we hope to welcome you back before too long. Property Owner

  • "We had a week over Christmas here and were delighted with the property and the way we had been treated."

Lovely decorations and a gift left, thankyou so much. Everything was available that you may need. Great cottage, warm, comfortable and cozy, with great views set in a quite relaxing area. Just great for an unwind. Which we did and did not want to leave. Great walks all around and a good local pub 2 mins from the door. Will be looking to book again for sure.

Dear Christopher: Thank you for your message. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at the cottage over Christmas. We hope to welcome you back soon. Property Owner

  • "Lovely property beautiful views."

Very well set out warm and cosy. Well equipped. Somewhere to put wet coats and muddy boots would be good. Vilage shop in far sawrey has been closed for ten years so did not get bath buns.. Good location did not use car for most of the week. Thanks.

Dear David Thank you very much for your comments. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Lakefield Cottage. Sorry about the bath buns! We'll put an extra mat by the front door for muddy boots - a good idea. We look forward to welcoming you back to the cottage at some time in the future. Property Owner

Perfect base to explore with our 2 year old. Loved the garden although listed as small it was a lovely outdoor space. Would love to return to this beautiful location.

  • "A nice clean and comfortable cottage."

Well equipped and maintained. Absolutely stunning location with an abundance of walks and places to visit. The two local pubs both provide good quality food and welcome dogs, ours loved his frequent visits. Hawkshead is a lovely place to visit and the cafe on the lake is a lovely place for a breakfast or afternoon tea. I fished the lake and the facilities / advice from the owners was brilliant. This is one cottage that we'll be returning to at the first opportunity as we only manage to explore a small fraction of the area and we hunger for more

  • "I feel the cottage would benefit from one or two essentials, soap in the bathroom , washing up liquid , black bin liners."

We also were surprised that there was no welcome basket on arrival. A pint of fresh milk to make a cup of tea would have been lovely.

We normally leave a soap dispenser, washing up liquid and spare bin liners and are not sure why these were not left out and we do apologise. As for "welcome baskets", practice varies. We do leave out tea and coffee. Unfortunately, fresh milk is a problem since the local dairy recently closed down as a result of covid and ill health. We do leave out milk sachets. We hope, however, that you enjoyed your holiday in this beautiful location. Property Owner

  • "Fabulous cosy cottage with a view to die for."

Clean and comfortable and a great location with loads of walks straight from the cottage. My only observation about 'facilities' is that some basics like washing up liquid/soap/cleaner could be provided but overall a great stay and I would definitely return.

Thank you for your feedback. We have noted your comments. We are so glad that you enjoyed the property and all the area has to offer. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was fine apart from the cleanliness there was lots of dog hair around the property that should have been cleaned more thoroughly, the first thing we had to do was clean the carpets before we could settle down."

Thank you for forwarding our guest's feedback. We are sorry to hear that he was disappointed with the cleanliness of the cottage in relation to dog hairs. We have checked with our housekeeper who has informed us that the outgoing guests, who did indeed have a dog, had themselves vacuumed before departure. Our housekeeper then changed the hoover bag and vacuumed thoroughly herself and then vacuumed a second time when she saw some dog hair she had missed. She acknowledged however that it can be really difficult to get every single dog hair even with daily vacuuming, especially if it is moulting season. We always ask guests to let us know immediately of any concerns about a property; had our guest contacted us our housekeeper would have been very happy to return and vacuum again. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to rectify any problem if guests wait until checkout to report it. We and our housekeeper work extremely hard to maintain the property to a very high standard and we hope that, notwithstanding these concerns, our guests enjoyed their holiday. Property Owner

The setting was perfect and it was easy to travel from. The cottage was comfortable and we didn’t want to leave. Waking up to birdsong, relaxing in the garden in the evening and the fact that our dog was welcome.

The property

This charming property is steeped in history.

Built in the orchard of Beatrix Potter’s former holiday home ‘Lakefield’, and with views over her loveable character Jeremy Fisher’s Esthwaite Water, there can be no better place for a couple and their beloved pet to spend a romantic Lake District holiday.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead is just one mile down the road and here guests can stock up with groceries and fantastic local produce.

Its cobbled centre is free from cars and offers a great choice of tea rooms and cafés interspersed with fascinating boutiques and gift shops.

The church is well worth a visit, as is the tiny village grammar school nearby.

Once inside the cosy cottage, guests will find plenty of room in which to spread out and relax as well as a fabulous picture window overlooking the lake and nearby fells.

The furnishings are generous and comfortable with the TV and DVD positioned perfectly for a lazy evening spent watching a favourite film or simply gazing out at the view.

The smart oak kitchen is exceedingly well appointed with every pot and pan one could possibly need.

A luxury house bathroom and pretty bedroom are on the first floor, and it is worth pointing out that this double bedroom comes with an additional single bed, perfect for a younger child.

Round and about the village are a seemingly endless choice of walks to enjoy, Beatrix Potter’s famous cottage Hill Top to visit, and a car-ferry crossing to Bowness is only a short drive away.

This is an excellent base for exploring the Lake District, with Ambleside, Coniston and Grizedale Forest all within easy reach.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

HAWKSHEAD

Ambleside 5.1 miles; Kendal 17.4 miles.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.
