"We had a lovely week in this very cosy cottage."
Ideally placed for silverdale and all surrounding areas in this great walking country. Friendly local pub literally two minutes walk away with good food. Prompt attention from the owner too when we had a problem.

"Fire alarms go off when making toast (not burning it)."
Tin opener broken, had to get into a tin with a knife to make our dinner. Put instructions as to where to park in the directions sent in booking, not just stuck in the kitchen window (we arrived after dark and didn't notice them, and a neighbour came and told us to move the car). Directions to Holme are nonsense (which roundabout?? There are two different ones you might pass depending on whether you approach from the north or south, and on the direct route from either you turn left in front of the pub, not right). No scourer left in kitchen. On the touch hob you have to press really hard to make the controls work. Tap in shower very stiff. No cafetiere provided (we wanted one).

"A well decorated, comfortable small mid terraced property situated in a quiet village."
The nice garden has 2 seating areas but is accessed across the access track to the terrace and the parking area. I only have a small 'Kia' car, and found it difficult to park due the the size of the space and the uneven surface. Information regarding the local Doctor and Hospital etc could be helpful.

"Owl cottage is a great location to enjoy the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales away from tourist hotspots."
It is an excellent location to explore the surrounding area by bike on cycles routes 70 and 700 to Grange over Sands, Cartmel and Levens on empty roads and cycle paths. The route 6 will take you to Kendal along quiet lanes. The Cumbria cycle way will take you through beautiful scenery to Silverdale and Arnside. The cottage advertises bike storage, but doesn’t say where, it is a lock up shed however no mention of where to find the key involved a phone call to Sykes. We had to move many building items and furniture and brush out the shed before we could store our 3 bikes. The Kitchen is spacious facilities are good and modern, but the fridge is very noisy and needed turning to full before the food was cold then it started freezing up at the back not ideal! The lounge is comfy and quaint with TV and fire. No handrail on the stairs and a gap makes this unsafe for young children. The double bedroom is large and spacious but the mattress is very uncomfortable and needs replacing. The single room is small noise from M6 and railway can be heard with the window open and again the mattress is very uncomfortable and needs replacing. The bathroom is modern but the hot water in the shower and hand basin gets dangerously hot to scalding point an accident here is waiting to happen and needs addressing. I had a shower and mistakenly turned the temperature up and was neatly burnt by the hot water. We had a week of glorious weather over 20 degrees each day but only 10.5 tog duvets are provided so I was either too hot with the duvet on or too cold with it off. Lighter tog duvets need to be provided for the summer months. The garden is a great space in which to relax and unwind despite hum in the background off M6 traffic . The whirly gig washing line provided is useless for drying washing as it’s located in a shaded area of the garden. There is parking in the road for your car or in a small space at the back of the cottage, but it is unclear which is the space for Owl cottage which needs addressing. The village of Holme is quaint with a pub but the only local shop has closed down. There is a mobile greengrocer who visits once a week. But plenty of shopping can be done at Booths in Milnthorpe. Overall good place to stay but with improvements made could be excellent.

"We enjoyed our stay at this lovely comfortable spaceous cottage, The local area has a lot to offer (walking opportunities, gardens and other attractions) and we did not need to venture to other possibilities (eg Lake District or Dales) during our stay."
The Sykes emailed directions to the cottage werent very good and seemed to have something missing - we didnt find out which roundabout they were referring to as a starting point .
We took advantage of the offroad parking spavce for our family sized car.The long garden was useful for its washing line but to make it more attractive to sit out in was in need of more tending than just the lawn being cut. With open windows we could hear the nearby railway and the continual drone from the M6 traffic in the background at night but the sound wasnt dominating and it did disturb our sleep patterns. The fridge/freezer was quite noisy operating in the hot weather.
The local shop was due to close at the end of our stay but there are plenty of other facilities nearby with local farm shops, and supermarkets in Milnthorpe and Carnforth.
More teaspoons , a non slip shower tray mat and a wall clock downstairs would probably enhance this cottage We found the kettle was ackward to fill directly from the kitchen tap.

"We found the cottage most homely and found it an ideal location to visit the lakes."
May I suggest however that the mattress is replaced as it wasn’t comfortable but the shower was great and the garden lovely. More accurate information regarding car parking would also be an asset as many guests apparently park in the wrong place initially.

"We enjoyed our stay in owl cottage, fresh flowers in the cottage on arrival was a nice touch and the owner was very friendly as she was still there when we arrived."
Food in the local pub 'Smithy Inn' was good and the staff were lovely. Local shop was ok for the basics but Carnforth is about 15 minutes away and has a Tesco and Aldi.
If you want to park up the car to visit the lakes and surrounding area the local 555 service is good, for the three of us was well worth buying the weekly group ticket for £63 as we used it four days of our trip and travelled between Windermere and Lancaster.

Very clean, with all you need - comfortable lounge area, tv with dvd, and good wifi.
Rural, quiet location (apart from the occasional, distant daytime train). Nice village walks to canal etc.
Additional to other's comments, there is an hourly bus service to Lancaster, Kendal, and beyond, should you wish to give the car a rest.
Central location for visiting area - north to Lake District, south to seaside, east to Dales.

A minutes walk from the very friendly shop and local pub serving excellent food. Twenty minutes from all the attractions and plenty to do in the area, my wee boy didn’t want to come home and asked if we could sell our house and buy this.

"Unfortunately the mattress springs could be felt when lying on them we had to put the duvet on top to rectify."
The M6 can be heard when windows opened. Very cosy cottage would definitely recommend though.
** Owner Response: thank you for your comments and I am sorry that you felt the mattress was uncomfortable. I have now purchased a Silent Night mattress topper to rectify the matter but would happily have sorted this had I been made aware during your stay. We have never noticed the noise from the M6 before as we are about half a mile from it but I appreciate your comments and it was nice chatting with you.
