    Mr Mackinnon

“The cottage was extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean.”

The owners have gone to great lengths to provide an elegant, modern touch which works very well. The location was perfect for exploring the local countryside, yet close enough to Preston and Blackburn for any city needs. The Feildens Arms also deserves a mention, being only 50 yards up the road; a very warm welcome plus great food and real beer!

About the location

MELLOR BROOK

Blackburn 4 miles; Preston 8 miles: Darwen 8 miles

Mellor Brook is a quaint village in the Ribble Valley in Lancashire. It’s home to the Feilden's Arms public house and will see the opening in 2018 of Thwaites Brewery Heritage Centre and Stables. A short walk up the hill to Mellor will take you to The Millstone and The Traders pubs and provide general store, chemist and Frank Littler’s butchers. On the far side of the village is Samlesbury Hall – a 14th century manor house offering dining and tours. About 5 miles north of the village is Ribchester, well known as a significant Roman site being the location of a Roman cavalry fort called Bremetennacum. Today you can explore the roman history through the publicly accessible remains and the fascinating Roman Museum on the banks of the Ribble. A couple of miles further up the valley will take you to Hurst Green, home of the magnificent Stoneyhurst College and start point for the Tolkein Trail, an eight mile circular walk taking in all the sites and vistas which inspired Tolkein’s Middle England. After all that walking we would recommend a drink at the Shireburn Arms. From Hurst Green you can take the back roads to Clitheroe via Bashall Barn, a farm shop complex with local produce, great food and drink and wonderful views. Clitheroe itself is a bustling market town watched over by the castle, dating back to the 12th century. Make time to visit the restored Holmes Mill for shopping, ice-cream and what is claimed to be the longest bar in England serving a minimum of 24 hand-pulled ales. If it’s the countryside that you’re after then there are a range of Ribble Valley walks from the doorstep, or you can venture further afield to the Forest of Bowland, Yorkshire Dales or Lake District – all of which are in an hour’s radius. Whether you like good local food and drink, open countryside, historical architecture or industrial heritage, there is plenty on offer in the local area.
