  • "What a wonderful few days we have spent in Horton Scar House."

Set in a beautiful location, excellent for exploring the local area. The House, is perfectly equipped with everything that you need, the Garden Room extension is lovely to sit and take in the views and listen to the quiet at any time of the day. There wasn’t a local store open that we could see but we had arranged a food shopping home delivery and the ample sized fridge feeder stored our supplies. We are a family of four and my Dad came with us to look after our little dog who is now too old to go on longer walks and there was ample room for all of us. However I had messaged Sykes to ask if the Super King could be split into two singles, but this can’t have been passed on to the owner, which was entertaining for my two 20+ year old sons to have to share the bed! We explored Catrigg Force, Stainforth Force, scaled the mighty Pen-y-Ghent, stopping off at Hull and Hunt Pots on the hike up, Malham Cove, Gordale Scar, Janet’s Foss, Ribblehead Viaduct and Aysharth Falls, the weather was magnificent which enhanced our visit, would be lovely to visit in the colder months and enjoy the cosy log burner and we very much hope to do so one day. Horton Scar House was perfect for us in every way but I would like to see the misted double glazed units in some of the rooms to be replaced (I have replaced some of my own at home so know it isn’t too costly a problem to fix) just so those wonderful views out of the window can be appreciated even more

  • "The cottage was very comfortable, clean and peaceful in a village setting popular with walkers."

It was a good base for visiting this beautiful part of Yorkshire. The small garden was ideal for enjoying the views and the many birds visiting the feeders. The late arrival time of 6pm and early leaving time of 9am were a disadvantage. But we had a lovely holiday, and the owner was very helpful and friendly when contacted about the key collection. We would certainly go back to this cottage again.

  • "The house was beautifully situated and we loved having breakfast in the garden room looking out at the sheep."

The lane leads straight to Pen-y-Ghent via Hull Pot, which we were lucky enough to see after heavy rain. There were a few minor niggles (some areas of mould on the ceiling and the non-stick pans could do with replacing) but otherwise it was perfectly clean and well furnished. The wood burner worked very well and it was great to have an EV charger. Martyn responded quickly by text to any queries we had. It would be helpful to provide some milk or even a small welcome pack as there are no shops in the village (unless Sykes have discontinued this practice since Covid?)

Absolutely everything is there for a relaxing or active stay. With fantastic walks on the doorstep it makes for wonderful days of exercise followed by relaxation. And as someone who drives an electric vehicle, having a charger available at the property means we wake up each day with a fully-charged vehicle (paid for via honesty box at cost price).

It was exceptionally clean and well prepared for our arrival. We found it very comfortable indeed and it had all we needed to be self sufficient whilst there. Ideally located for any serious walkers to explore the area right out of the door, and for families to explore local attractions a short drive away. A Peaceful, picturesque and quiet location & you won't be disappointed. Some Amazing local pubs for quite excellent food. We stayed over Easter and enjoyed the lambs in the field and birdlife attracted to the feeders. I Highly recommend this property and we would certainly return and stay again. Thanks for everything.

The chance to enjoy the little sitting area with the lovely views of Pen-y-Ghent was a real treat. The property is well equipped and there is plenty of room. I note some other people have commented on the parking. It’s absolutely fine for two cars providing you have two small to medium size vehicles. Just takes a little bit of manoeuvring but no drama. We have a BMW X1 and a Citreon hatchback) and we were fine. I would absolutely recommend this property and the owner was extremely helpful.

The wide variety of accommodation provided trouble free living throughout our stay. Mornings in the garden room with views of Pen-Y-Gent and abundant wildlife were a particular favourite. At night the lounge with cozy corner suite and state of the art wood burner offered more opportunities for relaxation. Our active days were rewarded with wonderfully restful sleeping accommodation which perfectly fulfilled the requirements of our group. Horton Scar House is in a terrific location with the Pennine Way literally on the door step. Walks were simply breath taking. The conveniently located train station meant trips into Settle were an added treat. Travelling on the legendary and scenic Settle to Carlisle line was highly appreciated by all. Plenty of different sitting areas on the ground floor for us all to spread out. Lovely garden space to sit in the sun after a long walk watching other walkers descend from Pen-y-Ghent. We enjoyed watching the lambs in the field right next to the garden room windows. Great selection of pots, pans and baking trays. Could do with more choice of glasses and there was no surface cleaning sprays for the kitchen and bathroom or bin liners (with no shops nearby to buy these). Sorry we missed the bin day, all the instructions said Tuesday night for Wednesday collection but as it was a bank holiday week the collection was a day early which is different to our area where bank holiday means a later collection. Maybe the cleaners could leave out a note if there is a change to the schedule to remind renters.

Beautiful views from the property and especially the garden. Sadly the weather let us down so we couldn't enjoy it. Fantastic area for walking, we didn't use our car and instead used the train station in the village to travel to Settle. Unfortunately the village pub which is very close by was closed. The only thing we struggled with was fitting our large 4×4 on the driveway which is wide but shallow in depth, so had to park parallel to the cottage. Cottage itself was spacious and had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend and hope to return.

The owners were extremely helpful. The house was way bigger than we expected, is very well equipped, and the woodburner works wonderfully. For us, the presence of an electric vehicle charger clinched the choice of this property and the lack of such properties is what's prevented us from booking via Sykes in recent years - please allow EV chargers to be searched as a property criteria. One aspect for improvement - we had to call the owners again to ask for more accurate directions. You really need to email better details with future bookings. The address is 4 Rock View. It makes sense to turn into the road called Rock View, but in fact the holiday cottage is down the next road along with no sign of it until you get there and spot the number.

Just as well as the pubs only open intermittently in the winter although we had a nice meal in both of them. Was pleased we took basic supplies with us as Settle is the nearest town there was no shop in the village. The one frying pan should be thrown out could not use. The smell of damp in the dining room was pretty strong so could not sit in there for meals. Also part of the shower doors in both bathrooms are off there track because of missing wheels. One of the days we were there unknown to us was a planned day from the electricity company to turn off the electric supply in the area. We were not informed of this. We went out for the day and when returning were met with a fridge full of lukewarm food which had to be thrown out. We found a letter later that evening which was dated August 22nd to inform the owners of this power outage. We really should have been informed. Apart from that the beds were extremely comfortable and the peace and quiet of the area was a plus.

The lounge seating is not very comfortable as not supportive - not good when you have spent all day walking - however, the beds were superb! Coat hooks or a coat stand would have been especially useful - particularly in wet weather. The area is great for human walks - but not dog ones, unless on a lead. Some local knowledge for those with pets that need to run would be good. We loved the location of the house - great scenery, walking and nearby attractions. We particularly enjoyed the wood burner in the chilly evenings and the starry skies on clear nights - no light pollution! The local pub was a bit of a let down. Good basic food but no atmosphere and too many notices saying don’t do this or don’t do that. Most customers will have muddy boots and/or dogs - just replace the carpet with a hard floor!

It was well equipped and satisfied our needs. The bottle of wine was a nice touch, as was the provision of bird seed which allowed us to enjoy watching a variety of birds come to feed, we have never had a woodpecker visit our feeders at home. It was in an ideal location to explore the Dales and the owners had kindly provided a considerable collection of leaflets to help us decide how to fill our time. If I am being super picky, I personally would add mats inside the front and back doors, it would prevent wet paws on clean floors. We would be happy to recommend Horton Scar house.

Lots of pleasant villages and towns - and fab scenery - in driving distance, plus of course Horton is the first station out of Settle on the famous line to Carlise. Garden was well kept, too, which was nice. Two pubs in the village (Note only one is dog friendly - and that had only one real ale on when we went, so if you are a dog owner want a rel ale pub nearby this might not be the best village, but obviously that's a specific issue to some people and no reflection on this excellent cottage).

! The lane leading up to it is very narrow and quite a tight manoeuvre onto the drive if you have a large car but it's doable, it just takes a bit of backing and and turning! But we'll worth the effort once you enter the house!! Spotlessly clean throughout, very warm and welcoming and the views are spectacular! It has been tastefully decorated and furnished and we had just about everything we needed in the kitchen! Plenty of hot water and lovely shower in the en suite, the bed was very comfortable with crisp white linen which we sank into every night! The log burner in the lounge was a must for us because the weather turned very cold, so it was lovely to light it in the evening and after a hard day's walking on the Pennines our dog reserved his place in front of it every evening. The Wfi is very fast and efficient, and the phone signal was great. As a group of 4 and a dog we found the house spacious enough for all of us and the extra sun room, I'm sure in the summer is a lovely bonus! We filled the bird feeders up and enjoyed watching an array of species come and feed. All in all we had a very relaxing comfortable and enjoyable 5 day stay at Horton Scar house and would love to return probably in the summer next time. We would highly recommend this to others wanting a chilled break away from the rat race! Perfect location for walkers. The one and only down side is the village really not much to do and probably for us it was the time of year but neither the cafe or the pub (the Golden lion) were open on our visit. The owners have gone to a lot of effort and expense to ensure their guests feel welcome and feel at home. You are made to feel like you are sharing their home - you are not made to feel that you are just a holiday tenant. Martyn was very helpful when I first called to discuss key arrangements and he made it clear that if we needed anything during our stay we only had to call. The cottage itself is to a very high standard and there are so many little touches that will make any stay a real pleasure. I would also comment that the property was very clean throughout. The bed was very comfortable and allowed a good night sleep. As walkers with a dog the location was just perfect. A week is normally enough for us to explore the local area but our week stay was not long enough. We walked for 36 miles during our stay and we have not even started to know the area. We were quite sad to leave. The cottage is in a great location but not too remote and you felt part of the village. The cottage was always a great place to come back to after a long walk. The lounge is just so comfortable and the kitchen and dining area is well equipped. As we have a dog we cooked every day and it was just perfect. The best shop we found for a fairly big shop is Booths in Settle. There are 2 pubs in the village if you do not want to cook and the nearest one to the cottage always looked busy. We stayed in the really hot spell during June but the cottage remained very cool. The interior design of the cottage has to be commended and overall I would also add that this cottage is excellent value for money. The garden area is very dog friendly – our 11 year old Beagle had a great time at the cottage and the walks – she coped better in the heat than we did! Thank you Martyn and Louisa for a great week - we will be back, and will recommend to friends and family.

This cottage is a real gem, right on the edge of a beautiful walk to Pen-y-ghent and in a stunning part of the Yorkshire Dales. The cottage is modern, well-furnished and a perfect place for a Yorkshire break, particularly for dog walkers

  • "I would just like to say what a lovely house in a lovely location, sitting in the garden room having breakfast watching the sheep was so relaxing."

We had our 14 year old son and his friend with us and felt really safe letting them just wander about. Perfect for people that want to do a lot of walking. Two lovely hotels and the little cafe across the road all doing great food. Would definitely recommend this house to everyone.

  • "We loved this cottage."

Super clean, comfy large beds, modern decor and everything you need. We have long legs and found the sofa very low but that is a personal thing!! but maybe an extra comfy chair ( especially if there were 5 guests) The property has a beautiful garden room that we used every morning. Lots to do whether you are a walker or visitor to the many cobbled villages. Would not hesitate to recommend this cottage.......5* Sykes Cottages were very professional and the owners very helpful with plenty of information.

  • "Fantastic house in fantastic location."

Quality of furniture and furnishings in the house 5 star with very comfy beds. We really appreciated the thoughtfulness of the owners in providing maps and guide books for walking in the area - this was really helpful and we've not come across this in other cottages we have rented over the years. The welcome bottle of wine was also a nice touch. Would definitely recommend this house if you want a central base in the Dales.
