  • "The cottage is lovely, as is the location - apart from the weather it was a nice stay."

(NB: The drive is one vehicle wide with a drop to the river one side - thankfully we didn't meet anything coming the other way all week!) As other reviewers have pointed out it does get very hot thanks to the Aga, which apparently is left on 24/7 (unless we missed a trick there??), and we had to leave the kitchen door open a lot when downstairs, and couldn't really use the dining table (it's open plan for that bit!) - and this wasn't even a really hot week! I'm sure it's lovely and cosy in autumn or winter though!! We also discovered that the Aga also makes the utensils and plates a little too warm, and food kept in the cupboard doesn't do too well - I'd suggest the fridge for anything perishable, even cake! ;-) Anyone staying in the height of summer might want to pack a couple of desk fans for the bedrooms - we noticed comments in the visitor books from years ago suggesting they'd be a good addition, but we couldn't find any. A floor fan in the lounge would have helped a bit as well!! (Whether it was us older ladies just being a bit weedy or not, we both found the windows couldn't be opened very wide!) We did love it, but probably wouldn't book it in the hot season again! It was a bigger struggle to keep cool than we anticipated. There's a lovely walk to Malham right from the doorstep, though be warned - there's no shade along the route once past the buildings! I'm not sure we'd have made it in a heatwave!! But it's an easy stroll, mostly flat, no really difficult bits even if you have dodgy old knees and the stiles weren't too hard to get over.

  • "Property needs a deep clean."

Windows inside and out dirty. Chest of drawers in main bedroom dirty, would not put clothes in. No HD channels on TV. Aga needed a clean. A stable door would have been useful as kitchen gets hot.

  • "The cottage was in a lovely location."

It was very comfortable and the Aga and central heating kept it nice and warm so we didn't have to use the open fire. The kitchen was very well equipped and had all the necessary pans and utensils. The cottage was clean throughout, and the underfloor heating was appreciated in the bathroom.

  • "Fountains Cottage is a fabulous cottage in an amazing position."

In Autumn the Aga made the cottage lovely and cosy, but would be a problem in warmer weather. There is no other way to cook other than the Aga, although the Mary Berry Aga book that was in the kitchen was excellent. While the cottage was clean on the surface the sockets were covered on thick dust and other similar issues. There were also a few maintenance issues, one which was sorted well. The cottages was basically well equipped but there wasn't any scissors, washing up liquid, dishcloth etc. The cottage is great with a lot of wonderful walks from the door and with a little bit more care over maintenance and housekeeping it could be perfect.

Very warm and cosy with electric Aga. Fantastic location to explore the Dales right from the doorstep.Couple of things had been broken that we reported to owner. Superficially very clean and tidy but needed a deep clean from time to time.

  • "Could not fault the fantastic location or the friendly locals."

In general, lovely cottage that just needs some love and attention to detail. Dishwasher provided - no tablets. Washing machine provided - very smelly but had I decided to use it, no airer provided. No corkscrew provided. Generally needed a good clean, particularly the kitchen. Bed linen was tired and the pillows were flat as pancakes and very uncomfortable. Generally disappointing which is a shame as with a little effort could be a real gem.

It’s a lovely warm comfortable cottage with everything you could need. It’s situated in a quiet location with walks from the doorstep. It’s conveniently situated for touring the Dales, the Moors and venturing into the Lakes. Cooking on the Aga was new to us, but we had some delicious results. The cottage also has some lovely arty touches and a good selection of DVDs. The food at the Victoria was really good too and within walking distance. Hopefully we will visit again in the future

  • "The property was clean and well presented, we particularly liked the Aga which kept the property warm."

The bedclothes were of good quality. There was everything you could possibly need, for example, brushes, hoover, cleaning materials etc and it was nice to have under-floor heating in the bathroom. We enjoyed the fact we could walk to the local pub, which took about 10 minutes, and also walk to the two pubs and tearoom in Malham, across the fields, which also took about 10 minutes. Access to Malham and other local walks was great, you don't need the car. We visited the Farm Shop and Tearoom at Airton twice. We also visited Settle and Skipton, by car, which were nearby. We would thoroughly recommend this property and location.

About the location

KIRKBY MALHAM

Settle 9 miles; Skipton 10 miles.

The picturesque Dales village of Kirkby Malham is situated in beautiful Malhamdale amidst superb open limestone countryside. The village is made up of the Parish Church, a lovely old village pub, a scattering of dwellings and farmsteads. Kirkby Malham is a great starting point for walkers, with a route along the Pennine Way down to the river and a beautiful walk to Malham, its more famous cousin. More energetic walkers should explore Calton over Calton Moor to Weets Top and Gordale, or head eastwards towards Hetton. Nearby, Malham is a magnet for visitors to the Dales who flock to see Malham Cove, one of Britain's most impressive natural features. The Cove consists of a natural cavern or 'amphitheatre' of limestone rock, stretching 75 metres in height and 300 metres around the perimeter. A steep walk up man-made steps is rewarded with a superb view across the moors and limestone pavements to Malham Tarn, the Pennines' highest natural lake. Kirkby Malham is a wonderful central location with Skipton, Settle, Grassington all within easy reach of this Yorkshire Dales village.
