  • "PROS: excellent value for money."

Despite being a corner terrace is surprisingly spacious and well furnished with comfortable beds and sofas. Spick and span throughout with a pleasantly decorated bathroom. Brilliant location being only a few minutes walk from centre of Kirkby Stephen with plenty of pubs and cafes. Whilst staying there we also visited Barnard Castle, Richmond, Windermere, Smardale Gill and Hadrians Wall - all within (at the most) an hours drive away. CONS - we were told to contact owner for key. Tried an hour before arrival (no answer), tried again a few times whilst waiting outside cottage. Owner rang back to inform us there is a key safe in the back yard. Why Sykes doesn't let you know this beforehand I don't know. Be aware the cottage is on a corner with double yellows and a zebra crossing immediately outside. We found it easy to park across the road but in busier times might not always be possible. No instructions on how to recycle. Came back one day to find no electrics at all. Found fuse box but nothing had tripped. Rang owner. Never got back to us. Figured it out. There is a key you have to insert. Other people mentioned welcome pack. Not for us. Why not invest in an electric kettle? The kettle on the gas hob takes AGES to boil and must cost more. We bought a wine glass from a charity shop and thus DOUBLED the number of wine glasses on site! Come on guys - one wine glass! Although you now have two. Despite the above would recommend as a comfortable and economical base.

The host's were really nice, linen changed weekly and treats provided. There is a small Spar supermarket 50 yards away, but your only a 5 minutes walk from the town centre and all it has to offer, pubs, shops, market (Mon) and 10 mins from many of the beautiful walks and only a 5 minute drive to the station for a trip on the Settkr Carlisle Railway. Thw cottage is on the main road so expect traffic noise. On street parking is available but finding a space can be a challege depending on the time of day.

It was clean and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen and a relaxing sitting room. The master bedroom was nicely decorated and the mattress was comfortable - I slept very soundly. It was also good having an enclosed outdoor area for my dog to be in (just worth noting that there is a shared access path through it to the next door neighbours but that wasn’t an issue for us). It was my first visit to Kirkby Stephen and I will definitely be coming back to the area (and to Corner Cottage) again. Lots of walking, some lovely independent shops, Kirkby Stephen station is just up the road for the Settle to Carlisle line and several dog friendly eateries. Linda & Ian were very helpful answering queries before the visit and the welcome pack of wine and chocolates was lovely to arrive to

  • "This cottage is absolutely lovely."

Everything you need such as cleaning, kitchen things etc is provided for you and it's spotlessly clean. It's also in a good location for visiting surrounding areas. The only upset we had was the communal back garden access. There are three cottages joined together and they all gain access to their back yard via the corner cottage gate! So of course you can't lock it. Unfortunately, on our last night our dog needed to go out for a wee at 4am and we never realised that a neighbour had left our gate open so our dog got out! My husband and I had to go walking the streets in total despair trying to find him. It really was terrible! Because of that I would suggest that this cottage is not ideal for anyone with pets.

If you wish to be near Yorkshire Moors, Lake District, Scottish borders (but not in a busy place) Kirkby Stephen is the village for you. All the shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants you could want. Very helpful tourist information. Lots of easy and harder/longer walks in the area. So many different places to visit/see: caves, waterfalls, fells, lakes, National Trust, English Heritage and of course the Settle to Carlisle train journey, and magnificent viaducts. If you enjoy walking, cycling, nature, history, trains and engineering definitely a good place to visit.

The Settle to Carlisle Line. The Vintage Buses are a family run business which made it interesting as they took you the scenic route. It was a beautiful location, stunning scenery.
