  • "We had a great Christmas at Oscar House."

It is a wonderful holiday house, comfortable, cosy and very well equipped - we had no issues cooking a 3 course Christmas dinner with turkey and all the trimmings! The house had been nicely decorated for Christmas and some lovely goodies has been provided. The location is also great, seconds away from rhe center of Kirby Stephen but on a quite road with views of fields from the lounge. Would highly recommend :)

  • "Excellent cottage in an upside-down format, maximising views of the fields at the back - well maintained with everything you need and well positioned far enough from the main road to be quiet, yet within easy access of pubs and restaurants in the town (the Chinese & Indian restaurants are particularly recommended)."

Ian & Sylvia excellent hosts, welcoming us on Saturday and ensuring we had their contact details if we needed anything (and answering email queries quickly) but leaving us be otherwise. Thank you both for the welcome pack, and the lovely fresh flowers throughout the upstairs. Only possible downside is that off-road parking is limited to one car, and the space available can be a little tight for larger vehicles (passenger side occupants may need to get out before reversing in to drive). This wasn't too much of an issue for us in a reasonably large family hatchback, but may be more of a problem for larger SUVs etc.

  • "The best cottage we have stayed in."

It was perfect in every way. The cottage is bright and cheerful and lovely flowers and wine were left by the owners. Cleanliness, along with all facilities, was excellent. It was home from home and so welcoming after being out all day walking etc. The location is very quiet with lovely views and just a minute or so walk into the town which is friendly and has all the amenities that one needs with a good selection of food shops, coffee houses and pubs. The tourist information office is excellent too. The very friendly owner, Ian, came to the cottage to check all was ok and to meet us. The location is within very easy reach of the Dales, Pennines and Lake District. We will certainly return to Oscar House for another holiday in the future.

Only thing I would say, one single 8-inch frying pan simply isn't sufficient to prepare a proper full-cooked breakfast for just 2 people, let alone 4. Having netflix or discovery+ on the tv, plus youtube that actually WORKED would be great Other than that, couldn't fault it.

  • "This cottage is an extremely comfortable and warm property with countryside views in one direction (but not the other) and within walking distance of the shops and cafes (admittedly, not many) that are in Kirby Stephen."

It is easy to envisage a car not being used very much during a stay here, as so much is on your doorstep. The Settle Carlisle Railway is about two miles away (Kirby Stephen West Station) and parking at the Station is free: you then have the chance of travelling this scenic line in either direction, either towards Carlisle or Leeds. The cottage has everything you could need (except a reading lamp and a decent iron, but no doubt the owners will rectify that) and there is parking for one car at the cottage gate. Despite being so close to the town, the location is quiet and pleasant, whatever the weather. The owners are on hand, if needed, and helpful, but not obtrusive. The cottage is also 'pet free', a major advantage.
