We stayed in Dove Cote, up in the eaves. Very comfortable apartment with a gracious feel and contemporary and quality furniture and fittings. Whole house is quiet with an air of grandeur and countryside perfect for walking, cycling etc. A good short break, quiet/retreat type of place. Only a few niggles: shower kept on breaking down; wifi aerial broken, so had to sit downstairs (2 flights down) to go online; a little too pricey for what it offers - only a tea & coffee welcome pack/tray & bath robes which had been washed many times.

The property

Located in the spectacular Staffield Hall, a beautiful Victorian manor house, this stunning apartment is a very special place for a getaway.

The Hall is located in the Northern Eden Valley, in between the lovely villages of Armanthwaite and Kirkoswald.

With quirky slanted ceilings and dark wood beams, this apartment has a comfortable and welcoming, modern feel, that absolutely screams luxury with extremely high-quality fittings and décor.

This is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway or a honeymoon.

Driving up to Staffield Hall is something you’ll never forget.

With its beautiful formal terraced gardens and staggeringly impressive façade, the manor house is an experience all on its own.

Enjoy the original period features, including the carved oak staircase, stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings, with beams, cornicing and ceiling rose, before strolling in the beautifully kept grounds.

Making your way to Dove Cote apartment, you’ll find a pleasant entrance hall that leads to a superb fully-equipped lounge/kitchen/diner, with leather seating and high-quality wooden furniture.

The designer kitchen area is small, but beautifully done, and has everything you need to create the perfect romantic dinner for two.

Stepping into the bathroom, you’ll find a spa bath and a power shower.

With some candles and good music, you could luxuriate for hours in the bath, then snuggle in your provided bathrobe, before making your way to the inviting double bedroom, with its super king-sized bed.

You might never want to leave!

The apartment itself has no outside space, but with the stunning grounds of Staffield Hall to be enjoyed right outside your door, you’re unlikely to miss it.

Explore the manicured lawn and formal terraced garden to your hearts’ content and enjoy the spectacular views over the Eden Valley and the surrounding countryside.

Kirkoswald village has some beautiful buildings, including St Oswald's Church and the College.

It makes for a perfect stroll, with lovely views, and you’ll find more of the same in the picturesque village of Armathwaite.

With many other pretty tiny villages to explore around Staffield Hall, you’re sure to be in for some lovely walks and some interesting finds in the local shops.

Further afield, travel the Eden Valley Railway in a steam train, or travel to the market town of Penrith, with its ruined castle and museum, markets, festivals and concerts.

Visit Carlisle for great shopping and restaurants, Talkin Tarn Country Park, the racecourse and Watchtree Nature Reserve.

Ullswater is the nearest lake, with steamer trips, watersports and walks galore.

You’re even close enough to the Scottish Borders to visit Hadrian’s Wall.

About the location

Penrith 9 miles; Carlisle 18 miles.

The delightful rural village of Kirkoswald is situated in the Eden Valley and is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District and the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Kirkoswald has two excellent pubs, both serving fine quality food, a 12th century church and a shop and Post Office. The River Eden runs nearby and the area is renowned for its superb trout and salmon fishing, along with walking, cycling, canoeing and climbing. There are literally miles of glorious paths following the river's course, with welcoming spots for riverside picnics and sightseeing. Expect caves and gorges, and look out for the ten unusual benchmark sculptures along the way. The Eden Gorge, between Lazonby and Armathwaite, is one of Cumbria's best-kept secrets, and is well worth exploring, plus the local railway station is a stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain. Brougham Castle, Long Meg and her daughters (the 3rd largest stone circle in England), Hadrian's Wall, the town of Penrith and the historic city of Carlisle are all a short drive away. The stunning scenery of both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks are within reach, making Kirkoswald a convenient place to stay.
