  • "The cottage itself is stunning with loads of character but the maintenance is poor."

There was not a full set of any glasses(3 champagne flutes and 2 whisky tumblers for 6), chipped cups and plates, blunt knifes and no steel, torch with dead batteries, washing machine that won't spin, tumble drier full of soil, bed with the laths fallen through and the mattress on the floor. For a Christmas break that was twice the cost of the rest of the year it was disappointing. The paths were lethal and a note warning that they were slippery would have been best served by spraying with algae remover and a blast off. Although winter, the garden looks like it hasn't been tended for some time. The parking to the side is steep and over grown and due to the wet weather getting 2 cars on was difficult. The lovely picture of the lounge with the log burner is misleading. It was only on reading other reviews, after booking, that we found out we could not light it, when it was one of the deciding factors for booking, When we tried cancelling we were told we couldn't as is was booked under a special booking reserve clause that was binding. 4 adults staying for Christmas week we arrived with quite a bit of food but it lacked storage. An under counter fridge with ice box does not hold much. The pantry at the bottom of the stairs is not very cold and we spoilt some food by leaving it here, The utility room it spacious and could hold a bigger fridge freezer. The lack of shower could also be resolved by putting one in the utility. It is a pity that what could have been a special holiday was spoilt by attention to detail

  • "An exceptional historic building in a beautiful area."

With a few tweaks it could be even better. We really enjoyed our week there. One bathroom for a property sleeping 6 is not ideal. Guests should be reasonably fit as the stone spiral staircase, several steps up and down in unusual places and very low headroom at times means you have to take care.

  • "Had a lovely time, beautiful old cottage with lots of character."

It was a great place to relax whilst snow fell outside. There are so many original features that make this cottage feel full of history. It was a shame we couldn’t light the log burner at it was cold and snowy. We went horse riding in Penrith as a family outing, the company was called ‘Happy Hooves’. It was great fun, and the staff were very friendly.

  • "Thank you for a lovely, relaxing long weekend."

Some fantastic walks in surprisingly nice but autumnal weather and a very cosy cottage on our return. Good food at the crown inn and the Atherton Arms but an unexpectedly good Sunday roast at the Midland Hotel in Lazenby – cheap and cheerful! Thank you again for being so accommodating on our arrival and talking us through the history of this fabulous cottage!

  • "We had a fabulous week there at High Bankhill, in a peaceful, beautiful setting."

The quaint house and gorgeous gardens made for a very relaxing break, and were a perfect base to explore Cumbria and the lakes.

  • "What a wonderful project you have with this house."

Its history is clear the moment you walk through the door. Good luck with piecing the history together. We met a Gentleman in the church yard (a farmer from New Biggin) who had vivid memories of the Bamber Family who were the last to live here permanently in the 1940s!

  • "Thanks so much for a lovely, peaceful week here, with only the birdsong to wake us up!"

Had two wonderful walks, up Hallen Fell and Buttermere and Crummock water – sublime in the sunshine. House steads at Hadrian’s wall worth a visit; really interesting. We’ve sustained several bumps on the head with the low beams, lovely though they are!

  • "What a week it’s been."

That wave, Covid restrictions easing – and a week at Ona Ash with the lakes and Northeast Penrith region looking simply glorious. We’ve walked, cycled, relaxed, and Ona Ash has been a house of tranquillity. We have really enjoyed its quirkiness and think the plan for a downstairs shower room is a great addition. We’ve used the garden, ducked and “focused” our way through the week, slept well and made regular visits to the crown in Kirkoswald. We would love to return. Many thanks!

KIRKOSWALD

Penrith 9 miles; Carlisle 18 miles.

The delightful rural village of Kirkoswald is situated in the Eden Valley and is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District and the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Kirkoswald has two excellent pubs, both serving fine quality food, a 12th century church and a shop and Post Office. The River Eden runs nearby and the area is renowned for its superb trout and salmon fishing, along with walking, cycling, canoeing and climbing. There are literally miles of glorious paths following the river's course, with welcoming spots for riverside picnics and sightseeing. Expect caves and gorges, and look out for the ten unusual benchmark sculptures along the way. The Eden Gorge, between Lazonby and Armathwaite, is one of Cumbria's best-kept secrets, and is well worth exploring, plus the local railway station is a stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain. Brougham Castle, Long Meg and her daughters (the 3rd largest stone circle in England), Hadrian's Wall, the town of Penrith and the historic city of Carlisle are all a short drive away. The stunning scenery of both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks are within reach, making Kirkoswald a convenient place to stay.
