  • "Absolutely beautiful cottage in the most spectacular setting."

The owner has gone above and beyond to ensure the cottage has everything anyone could ask for and more! Immaculate and is obviously a loved and cared for property. I booked last minute trying to find somewhere within an hour and upon arrival the owner had even ensured the heating was on ready very late in the night which was truly appreciated. Will definitely recommend this cottage and hope I will be back soon. Best base for exploring the surrounding countryside and the Lake District. Best cottage experience thus far!

Which wasn't a good start to the holiday. We did ring the owner the next day to sort the heating which he did.

Cottage is ideal for short break and would definitely book to stay again. Could do with anti slip mat in shower and more tea spoons but other than that thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Clean and well-equipped. The main bedroom is a little cramped and the sofas in the living room are not particularly comfortable - maybe it's just us as we prefer high backs!

A nice cosy cottage , extremely well equipped , with excellent views out the back onto the fells. I strongly suspect that we will be back. Note that the nearest " proper " shop is at Kirby Thore or into Appleby its self.

  • "Really lovely cottage, well equipped, well maintained, modern but lots of character."

Remote location with beautiful views and lovely trail to Dufton pike from doorstep. Great base for driving to lakes or into Yorkshire dales, for walking or exploring towns, and a few pubs in short driving distance. Lots of tips in the visitors book. We booked for 3 adults but ended up being 4 adults and there's plenty of space with the conservatory, lounge and back garden which gets a good amount of sun. We had to make use of the sofa bed and as per description it's fine for flexibility if you're willing to make do and take seperate bedding for that. We found it most comfy to put sofa bed mattress directly on the floor as there is something wrong with the frame. Luckily we had to camping mats with us which we put underneath for extra padding.

  • "Lovely location and generally well-equipped, though a tea towel and couple of extra teaspoons would be useful, as would some pods for the coffee machine - and the cafetiere doesn't have a handle!"

The Sky Tv was great, but we found the sofa rather uncomfortable as we like a high back and it is very low. It would also be helpful to have guidance on recycling - as there wasn't any, we put everything in the waste bag. Nor did we see any guidance about towels and bedding for when we left, so we stripped the beds and placed towels on the bathroom floor.

Thank you for your feedback. A freshly laundered Tea Towel is supplied as standard with each visit and is located on the pull out rail next to the oven. If for some reason on this visit this wasn't present we apologise, but it is standard practise for this to be replaced after each guest by the cleaners. We'll update the visitor guide with some guidance on recycling, there is a box in the front garden next to the bin for recyclable waste. We hope you enjoyed your stay overall! Property Owner

The cottage is lovely - very comfortable and in a quiet little village which felt like it was miles away from anywhere, even though it wasn’t. So incredibly peaceful and relaxing which was just what we wanted. Would highly recommend and are thinking of making it an annual trip!

  • "The cottage had just been done up when we visited, to a very high standard indeed, and is one of the best we have stayed in."

It is most comfortable and has incredible views from the back garden. If you want somewhere cosy and well equipped but really peaceful and relaxing, this is perfect. The only things that I might add if it were my house would be mattress protectors for the lovely new mattresses, lighter duvets for summer months, a knife holder to make more room in the cutlery drawer and an indoor clothes airer (suggested by several previous visitors). But these are small points that don't in any way affect the quality of the house.

Thank you for your feedback. So happy you enjoyed Cross Fell View. Also thank you for your suggestions. Mattress protectors have now been added to all mattresses. We'll look to add an indoor clothes airer in the next couple of months. We hope to welcome you back in the near future! Property Owner

  • "The holiday cottage we stayed in was lovely, well furnished and well equipped in the kitchen."

A bit let down we weren’t provided with any wood for the fire and the place is very tired and definitely needs some tlc however none of this affected our stay. Very very out in the middle of nowhere with no local shop or cafe (closest was about 5 miles away) but this would suit some people due to how quiet the area is! Overall we would come back again but stay somewhere a bit closer to a town, or even just a shop!

Many thanks for your feedback. We do advise on the advert that logs need to be purchased locally, but we will clarify that a starter pack regrettably cannot be provided. The property will be redecorated by the end of April 2022 with a new bathroom/walk in shower, new mattresses and bedding, plus new carpets and repainted throughout. Property Owner

My only criticism is that the house was extremely cold when we arrived and the storage heaters didn't kick in till the next day, the hot water took several hours to heat up also. Previous cottages we have stayed at have been warm on arrival!

However, as we left the A66, we past some lovely countryside and on arrival, we were all pretty impressed with the cottage. Knock is a lovely little picturesque village and the views from the garden were breathtaking. There are no pubs or shops in the village but Dufton and Long Murton were not too far away and a pleasant walk, both have a welcoming pub. The cottage itself was spacious, clean and tidy and comfortable for the four of us. Appleby is also worth a visit, we walked in and got a taxi back, all in all, a very nice long weekend and very much value for money!

  • "Nice little place in a really quiet village (it’s just one street really)."

Around 11 miles to Penrith or 5 miles to Appleby. No weekend buses but taxis will pick up. Panoramic views having an early morning coffee in the back garden. Inside is a mixture of modern (WiFi, kitchen, shower) with traditional cottage ( wooden doors, wood burner ) Overall, it was what we wanted and expected. Would certainly recommend if you want to get away from everything. Negatives? Nothing of any real note. Furniture isn’t the most comfortable and the toilet takes a lifetime to fill back up with water which can be a bit awkward at times!

Kitchen was well equipped. Bed was comfy. Good views from the back garden. Excellent value for money, considering it was half-term week. Problems: The wood burner didn't draw very well so hardly produced any heat. The storage heater on the landing didn't work. The grill hadn't been cleaned. The cottage was very cold when we arrived. In other cottages we have stayed in, the heating has been switched on prior to our arrival.

About the location

KNOCK

Appleby-in-Westmorland 5 miles, Penrith 11 miles.

The picturesque, rural village of Knock is in an ideal location for those looking to explore the North Pennines, Lake District and Eden Valley. The quiet village sits in the foothills of the spectacular North Pennines. Knock is just 1.3 miles from the larger village of Dufton where there is a pub and just five miles from the historic town of Appleby. Kirkby Thore, just a 5 minute drive away has an award-winning bistro called The Bridge, serving an array of locally sourced food. At the heart of the lush Eden Valley, Appleby-in-Westmorland is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain; still today, many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. Visit Appleby in July and experience the atmosphere of the Jazz Festival, which is fast becoming a popular attraction, enjoy a walk on the Pennine Way at Dufton, or explore one of the local cycle trails. With the delightful Pooley Bridge, Penrith and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
