  • "We had a fantastic week at duck down cottage, the location is fantastic for walks and exploring the local areas, traffic can be quite noisy at times as the road is quite a busy road."

The tolkin trail was a lovely walk, we also recommend Gisburn forest. Langdon Brook and the forest of bowland for some great walks. We visited the surrounding villages and bought some of the famous Cowmans sausages in Clitheroe absolutely delicious

  • "Duckdown is a lovely old cottage beautifully furnished with excellent ambient lighting."

We found it well supplied with equipment and appliances. Thanks to the wet and muddy weather the washer drier was very well used ! The bed was large and comfortable and the bedroom lovely and warm. Although we walked him regularly it was good to have a fully enclosed and safe garden for our dog Chico. The cottage is perfectly situated with walks along the river Ribble or the Tolkien Trail straight from the door. Whalley and Clitheroe are nearby and both worth a visit. Restaurant wise we'd recommend the Aspinall Arms on the outskirts of Whalley for lovely food, great service and excellent ambience. A lovely break all round.

A lot of care has been taken in choosing the surroundings and even the mandolin on the wall was tuned correctly. Everything we needed in the kitchen and bathrooom and a very comfy bed. If we come to Lancashire again we will try to book Duckdown again. BTW I'm 6'4 and I only had to duck through the front door! Nick

  • "Duckdown Cottage is wonderfully homely and inviting."

Genuinely charming with everything you need for a restful stay. We found the 2 nearby pubs lovely, with the closer one being slightly higher quality if you want a meal in the village. There are some nice walking routes around the village with spectacular views. Nearby, by car, there are plenty of places to visit that are well worth short day trips out. All in all Duckdown was a lovely cottage with a cosy welcoming feel

  • "What a beautiful eclectic cottage!"

This little beauty fits in perfectly with the wonderful mystical landscape. Beautifully clean and cosy with some welcome treats for us and our dog! The bed was wonderfully comfortable and the log burner was perfect. We took some extra logs but there is ample supplied for one or maybe two nights. We enjoyed some amazing walks nearby and a well earned drink in the welcoming local pubs. No hairdryer at the cottage so if you need one remember to take your own otherwise everything you need is in the cottage. Parking could be tricky in high season but we didn’t have a problem and didn’t want to use our car anyway - too many local walks. An amazing cottage un a wonderful location. I would definitely recommend it to anyone

We really enjoyed time in this pretty shabby chic cottage. No expense seemed to have been spared in decorating the rooms with interesting, cross -cultural decorations. No bare walls here! We particularly liked the wood fire and comfy bed.

  • "Really cosy cottage in wonderful location."

Lovely big comfortable super king bed meant we slept like logs! Lots of nice decorative touches throughout. We really enjoyed the location, there are lots of walks in the area and we visited both the Forest of Bowland and Pendle Hill. It rained a lot, but we were expecting that in October. A couple of points for improvement (not intended criticism as we know the property is quite new as a holiday cottage) - it would have been nice to have had a better welcome pack. Most places we have stayed provide fresh milk, butter, bread, jam and wine. These are the things that get you through the first night! Also the plug in air freshener brought on my asthma, so turned it off and did seem to be masking dog smell (downstairs) and cigarettes (upstairs). These are just minor points, the cottage is lovely and we enjoyed our stay very much.

The property

This quirky, mid-terrace cottage sits in the heart of the picturesque Ribble Valley village of Hurst Green, with a pretty and quaint interior- it's a perfect base for an individual or a couple looking for that special retreat. Just as the name suggests: 'Duck down!' through the old characterful doorway to enter the cottage.

Kick off your walking boots and you are straight into the cosy sitting room with its woodburning stove and characterful nooks and crannies-it'll soon have you curling up on the velvet sofas-feeling at home.

A step down from the sitting room takes you into a charming kitchen/diner -it's.

appointed with all the essentials for a short break, including a freestanding cooker with four ring hob, fridge, washing machine, dishwasher and there's plenty of space for you to enjoy rustling up a hearty meal.

There's even a slow cooker if you want to return from one of your walks with a meal ready for you!

Light and airy for a cottage this room overlooks the garden- fragrant and colourful with plenty of flowering bedding plants, it's a bit like a small piece of an English country garden reflecting the changing seasons and it's lovely to sit or dine in weather permitting.

The back door into the garden is one of the cottages many quirky features being so narrow you might need to 'breathe in' or ''walk through it sideways!!!' especially after that homemade cooking!

Upstairs is approached from behind a door in the sitting room.

The bedroom is beautiful with its shabby chic french funiture and hand painted king size bed.

From the landing there is a bathroom with a three piece suite, including a bath and shower over.

Overlooking the war memorial, ‘Duckdown Cottage’ is truly in the hub of Hurst Green – it’s next door but one to Millie’s Tearoom and next door but two to the Shireburn Arms (serving food and real ales) and the Bailey’s Arms is but a further stones throw away.

Staying at this cottage is likely to bring quiet times with beautiful bird song and other days like Sundays when it bustles- becoming a magnet for cyclists, walkers, and ramblers, who take advantage of doing the Tolkien Trail.

A picture post card village-Hurst Green is rich in its stories from across the generations: of highwayman, ghosts and folklore and the quaint lanes, pubs and eateries only add to its charm.

Located between Clitheroe and Longridge in the Ribble Valley one of its strongest connections in history is to the famous Jesuit day and boarding school: Stonyhurst- indeed we understand this cottage was previously owned by them.

Stay here and you're well placed for visiting many other beauty spots and some of the finest eateries in the north such as the Inn at Whitewell.

The Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are an easy drive away for days out.

Closer at hand, the villages and towns of Clitheroe and Whalley are steeped in their own special histories to discover more about.

Duckdown is a charming base for uncovering the North West of England and the Ribble Valley, somewhere you might be returning to again and again.

About the location

HURST GREEN

Stonyhurst 1.3 miles; Ribchester 3.6 miles; Clitheroe 5.3 miles.

Hurst Green is a small village in the Ribble Valley district of Lancashire, England, connected in its history to the Jesuit school, Stonyhurst College. The village is 5 miles (8 km) from Longridge and 4 miles (6 km) from Clitheroe, and is close to the River Ribble, near its junction with the River Hodder. Many areas in the UK claim to have inspired J.R.R Tolkien's creation of middle earth but the author certainly spent a lot of his time at Stonyhurst College working on The Lord of the Rings during the Second World War. Many have found connections with this landscape around the college and the 5.5 mile Tolkien Trail explores the Ribble Valley that may have inspired him. Walk in the footsteps of author J.R.R. Tolkien who regularly stayed at Stonyhurst College in the Ribble Valley. J.R.R. Tolkien was renowned for his love of nature and wooded landscapes and the countryside around Stonyhurst is richly beautiful. A number of names which occur in 'The Lord of The Rings' are similar to those found locally including Shire Lane (in Hurst Green) and River Shirebourn.
