  • "This is our second visit to this beautiful cottage."

It really has everything you could wish to have. 2 beautiful bathrooms and 2 gorgeous bedrooms. We only needed the one. The upstairs bedroom is absolutely stunning with gorgeous old beams, a fabulous, big bed and lovely ensuite shower room. The attention to detail really is amazing, I particularly love the fresh flowers in the rooms and the very lovely welcome pack. This cottage really is home from home with a fabulous village pub literally across the road, where we had superb Sunday lunch. Definitely worth the long drive from Somerset and I have a feeling there will be a third visit!

Thank you so much for such a wonderful review, we were pleased your second visit was enjoyable and the weather was beautiful. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future . Property Owner

Lovely big bed in main bedroom. Downstairs bathroom tap needs a bit of attention but otherwise all very good. The wood burner and the underfloor heating are nice and cosy. Location is nice, in a small village with a good pub.

Thank you for a lovely review. Pleased your stay was comfortable and enjoyable. The tap has a knack to it. Basically you put the lever in position until it stops the water flow. I’ll have it looked after as it’s not your average style of tap but I haven’t had any issues . Property Owner

  • "We had a very enjoyable short break at Croft Cottage and would definitely book again if we were planning to stay in the area."

We have deducted one star due to access into the parking being difficult because of vehicles parked on the road opposite and the cottage was rather cold and unwelcoming when we arrived but we soon settled in. The small welcome gift was a lovely touch.

So good to hear you had an enjoyable stay. Unfortunately the residents park outside their property as they do not have drives. We have a 4x4 and we have not encountered any issues parking on the drive. Sorry you found the cottage unwelcoming but pleased you got the cottage toasty hot throughout your stay. Property Owner

  • "What a FANTASTIC FANTASTIC property and Hosts :) :) :) :) (( But please read my review of Sykes Holiday Cottages at the bottom, as I feel rather cheated by their pricing system, and feel you should be warned !"

! )) We stayed for two nights, as a farming family of four, with older teenage daughters attending a wedding, and we all thought the cottage was GREAT. Beautiful attention to detail in a super-duper renovation. The best equipped place I think we've ever stayed. Lovely unexpected extras, made the stay even better. Some thoughtful fridge essentials, plus tea / coffee / sugar / toiletries etc. and even fresh flowers !! Under-floor heating in the downstairs bathroom was a real treat. But if you would like the same in the kitchen, be sure that it's switched on asap, as it takes ages to heat through. I suspect that it may usually be left "ON", but as our stay was the week after a heatwave it was switched off when we arrived. A big PLUS, not mentioned in the details of Croft Cottage, is the stone-flagged entrance hall, perfect for boots, outdoor clothing and equipment, which leads through to the enclosed, secure, paved area beside / behind the cottage, perfect for storing up to four pushbikes, not undercover, but very handy. Seconds from a recommended Pub, less than 10 minutes by car to Appleby, perfect for the Lakes, so YES, we would highly recommend to all :) Now for the bit about SYKES ....... My only BIG misgiving is the Pricing System used by SYKES. I booked well in advance of our stay, to avoid disappointment, noticing that, though really expensive, the price quoted for Croft, was on par with all other SYKES, local cottages, ( they are agents for lots !! ) Now we have returned home, and I have revisited the website to check on Croft Cottage details, I am horrified to find, that the prices for 99% of dates going forward are down as low as one THIRD of the price I paid !! I rang Sykes, hoping that there had been some kind of mistake, but sadly not, the prices I saw when booking, apparently reflect the level of interest in holiday accommodation in the area at that time, despite plenty of availability at the moment :( So I will try to book direct next time, though this does limit choice considerably :( Many thanks for reading to the bottom, have a lovely stay at Croft Cottage !!!

Thank you so so much for your kind and positive comments and pleased you enjoyed your short stay. We would welcome you back so you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Eden Valley Property Owner

  • "Croft Cottage was immaculate throughout and tastefully decorated."

The kitchen was very well equipped. From a practical point of view the taps in both bathrooms could do with being adjusted in some way as water could easier escape over the side of the sink onto floor as they were not easy to turn off. We had difficulty in locking the outer front door from outside at night. We have a very restful & comfortable stay.

Thank you for your lovely feedback. I’ll get the lock looked into as soon as possible Property Owner

  • "This is a wonderful property."

It may not be the 'picture perfect' exterior but the interior is cosy, inviting and characterful - plus the cottages across the street are gorgeous, providing a pleasant view! The kitchen has all the amenities you'd expect, including underfloor heating. Every room is a really good size and the large bedroom suite upstairs is delightful. I think that four people (2 couples) could comfortably stay here without getting in each other's way too much. The cottage had been empty for a few days before we arrived so was cold and took a few hours to properly warm up but it was the perfect excuse to light the wood burner. I would definitely love to stay at Croft Cottage again, thank you very much for a lovely stay.

So pleased you enjoyed your stay , hopefully we will have a pear tree creeping up the front of the cottage soon Property Owner

  • "Unfortunately we had a number of issues with the property mainly due to cleanliness, there had been problems with the cleaner for this week but that doesn't account for the substantial build up of dust etc under the sofa in living room, this had built up over a long time."

The microwave, cooker and fridge were all very dirty and lots of hair on bedroom carpet and other areas in the house. Issues when we arrived with heating and no starter pack of firewood left, made for a cold first night as only form of heating in living room. No information left on the property at all, nothing on the recycling or bin procedures. Beware of pointing faults out to the owners, we did, and were accused of breaking the iron, and of leaving rubbish in the property, both complete lies, I would not recommend Sykes again as it would appear they can provide no help when there is a problem and it also would seem that they don't keep tabs on the standard of properties either after the first initial check, very surprised at this. It's a learning curve, but be aware the owner at Croft Cottage, who seemed nice when we met them, are completely different when you raise any issues

The only slight criticism is that there wasn’t a lot of information. There was no heating in the sitting room apart from the Beautiful log fire which was not practical to run all day due to the cost of logs and finding a supplier nearby.

Seamless check in - hosts were responsive and helpful but also didn’t bother us at all unless we needed something. 10/10 for kitchen equipment (which is frustratingly rare for a holiday cottage!). The showers were dreamy and the super king bed was the comfiest we’ve ever slept in!! Wow! Gorgeous, massive garden. Thank you for all the care that has clearly been put into this place. It was a truly relaxing break. We did lots of wild swimming including: Black Moss Pot, Buttermere, Ashghill Force. Highly recommend especially first two. Only feedback would be: some recommendations for walks/swims etc and an OS map would be fab additions. Plus the hot water didn’t quite last enough to top up a hot bath (despite ‘boosts’, unless we did it wrong?) Thank you so much!

Clean, comfortable, with everything you need, full of character and decorated so elegantly. Loved everything about it. The only bit of constructive criticism i would give is to have a welcome sheet with info on a few things : How to work underfloor heating as it was really hot where to leave black bin bags of rubbish (not recycling as this was instructed) Where to find/how to work immerser for hot water Wifi log in details ( spent a while trying to find it)

So pleased you enjoyed your stay, I’m sorry you were unable to find the literature/instructions for appliances etc. I can only assume it had been put to one side in the cleaning process and not returned. Hope it wasn’t too inconvenient Property Owner

About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
