“The house was large, warm, and well sited for exploring the dales.”

We had a good week with good weather, however there were several negatives: - We had problems with a fridge door which took 4 days to fix and is liable to re-occur at any time. - One of our cars suffered a nail puncture and needed a new tyre. On inspection we found over 20 large nails scattered in the gravel of the house's parking bay. Obviously discarded following previous work and certainly the source of the puncture. - The annex bedroom smelled musty/damp. - Garden furniture was uncomfortable and insufficient for 10 people. Provision of a BBQ would have been helpful! - Kitchen utensils were adequate though some were old and uninviting (frying pan especially). - The house had a sold sign on it and it felt like it it was a place which was simply awaiting transference - not much care and attention on house and garden over recent months.

Long Preston is sometimes regarded as a village through which your average Dales visitor drives to get to Settle or perhaps Malham but, take time to dwell a while and it is possible to find perhaps the perfect launchpad for your Dales adventure.

Perfect pubs on the village green; a Maypole and some lovely local shops make this a destination in its own right.

About the location

Settle 4 miles; Malham 4 miles; Skipton 12 miles.

Long Preston is an attractive Yorkshire Dales village in Ribblesdale, twelve miles from Skipton (popularly known as the 'Gateway to the Dales'), four miles from Settle. To the north, the landscape rises to the fells, moors and picturesque valleys of the Dales; to the south are the wetlands of the Ribble Valley which, in turn, sweep upward to the magnificent wilderness of Bowland. The village benefits from several large, tree lined, village greens, with footpaths leading direct to the surrounding hills, and it also boasts two excellent pubs with first rate cuisine. The railway station on the edge of the village provides access to the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway line which crosses some of the most beautiful and inspiring upland scenery in the country. Nearby Settle is a bustling market town with a weekly market, the centre being dominated by the Shambles, an historic 3-storey building with shops on two levels and houses above, and the Town Hall. There is a good selection of restaurants and pubs and a public swimming pool.
