  • "Beautiful, well designed home."

The dedicated garden was handy. Our only observations were that it would have been nice to have a dining table that seated ten. It was not clear on the listing that dogs were only allowed downstairs. We enjoyed meeting the owners who were very helpful answering any queries.

A lovely little welcome basket too including wine, fresh eggs, milk, shortbread, tea, coffee and even logs for the fire. They have literally thought of everything. The kids loved going down to the private river and field we didnt want to leave and will definately return. Very comfortable, clean and large for a big family. Can not fault it whatsoever.

The house was absolutely amazing with everything you would want in a home. The kitchen was more than well equipped, bedrooms were all clean and comfortable. The surroundings were so fresh and peaceful, with the views of beautiful green field and woods. The kids were delighted to see the cows grazing in the fields. The host also had chickens and a very friendly dog. There is plenty of places to see being so near the Yorkshire Dales and the coast. The property has its own woodland and a stream running through it. So you could stay and just go for long walks and enjoy the idealic surroundings, if you wanted a relaxing break. Both Janette and David were excellent hosts, so kind and friendly and very welcoming. And lived next door and were available if you had a problem or needed anything. Being in a valley surrounded bey woodland, we didn't have much reception from our phones, but there is WiFi in the house which made up for it. We will definitely return again to enjoy the countryside

  • "What a lovely couple of days we have had."

The property itself was all we hoped it would be. Clean, warm and inviting. Plenty of space for our family, the property is vast upstairs and although only one downstairs room (open plan kitchen/dinner/living room) it was more than adequate for us. The owners were lovely and friendly and greeted us on arrival and were then on hand throughout our stay. The location is stunning, we had access to the owners land which is literally on the doorstep, open the patio doors and you can walk through the field and woods and down to the river. The kids and dogs (and adults!) all had a ball. We were lucky to have beautiful, sunny, warm weather and sitting on the sun trap of a patio listening to birds singing and the river running was like heaven on earth. We were sad to have to return home but would highly recommend this house to anyone.

The views to the back of the house are wonderful and the house sits in the middle of stunning Dales countryside. The location is very peaceful with just the sound of birdsong and the stream and river running nearby. Deer often seen in the meadow at the rear of the house. Lots of little villages within a short drive that will cater for your needs with shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Owners stay next door and are on hand to assist if required. If you want a quiet, comfortable and peaceful break with lovely surroundings then get to Spen House.

We stayed here for a family get together in these strange times and had a fantastic time. My four grandchildren aged 6, 5 and two 3 year olds thoroughly enjoyed themselves just playing in the garden and fishing in the stream and were upset to go home. We were made to feel really welcome from the start by the owners. The house itself is furnished to a very high standard and has a very well equipped kitchen. Hope to return again in the future.

Set far enough away from the world so as to enjoy absolute peace and tranquility, yet close enough to local amenities and attractions so that you are not entirely detached from life. The bedrooms were all wonderfully decorated and the amount of space throughout the house was pleasing. We loved waking up to see the cows in the field and the sound of the river, and the weather definitely didn’t disappoint. We’re now just gutted to be home!

  • "The cottage is lovely, very clean and well maintained, beautifully decorated with top notch furniture and accessories, well equipped kitchen etc etc."

There are five exceptional spacious bedrooms upstairs, however downstairs the space is very limited with just one family room which we felt was not big enough for 10 people. We booked this cottage for a family get together, 6 adults and my four grandchildren children, two 9 and 7 year olds, if we had been 10 adults there wouldnt have been enough seating for us all in the sitting area and the dining table sat 6 people comfortably. We did manage to squash round it but believe me 10 adults would not have had room. The TV was situated on the wall which was awkward to watch and could only be seen by half the chairs. Unfortunately however, the weather was stormy when we arrived and my grandchildren were excited at seeing each other again after several months apart, they were playing upstairs and running around when we had a knock on the door asking us to tell them to stop as they were causing a disturbance by running up and own the upstairs corridor!!!!!!!!! The whole idea of hiring a large family house, which wasn’t cheap, was for all my family to meet up and enjoy time together, the complaint, the lack of seating downstairs for us all to relax together and being cramped whilst enjoying our meals I must admit spoilt the weekend. I hate to think how 10 adults would fit into the downstairs living accommodation comfortable. It was such a shame as it a lovely cottage in beautiful countryside, perhaps in the summer the kids would have been running around outside and we could have used the outside seating area!

Also, there had been and was a lot of rain at the time of our visit so conditions underfoot were very muddy which also made it difficult to walk anywhere with or without the pushchairs. Having said this, we would highly recommend Spen House, it is beautiful and the owners Dave & Janette were so lovely and accommodating to our needs. We were there to celebrate a surprise special birthday which turned out just perfect.
