  • "No sign of a visitor's book as we wanted to thank the owners for a lovely stay."

The cottage was comfortable and perfect for us; three year old up to pensioners. The only slightly negative comment we could make is that the approach track is quite scary at night and one really needs to crawl over the cattle grids. That said, the children enjoyed "our driveway", especially watching the sheep watching them back! I noted that some reviewers complained about the proximity of the railway and M6; they never intruded on our peace at all. The children also loved the playpark, despite it being November.

  • "Our stay at Mount Cottage was absolutely lovely, albeit a bit wet due to the weather!"

The cottage was lovely and had all the basic amenities you would expect with a property of this size, although a small welcome basket (just a pint of milk and some tea / coffee) would have been greatly appreciated, especially as we arrived after 8.30pm in the dark and didn't know where the local shop was. As per the listing, there is some noise (only if you are a very light sleeper) as you can see the M5 and a train line from the property, It didn't bother us after the first night though. The size of the rooms were great and the living space on the first floor was more than ample for us and the dog, it was very cosy, warm and comfortable. A few minor things really but as it's a honest review, there were a few cobwebs and dead flies hanging from the beams that needed a little attention. We also noticed a few bulbs upstairs and in entrance way that needed replacing. I would suggest the welcome book is placed in plain sight as it took us a while to find it and it wasn't particularly comprehensive in terms of details (different checkout times are stated within in, doesn't mention where to leave the keys on checkout etc.) but nothing a quick update wouldn't solve. But these things they weren't things that would stop us staying again. Outside was perfect. Beyond perfect actually. Lots of walks with the dog down by the river, play area for our daughter. The scenery was beautiful, calm and quiet. I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting the best of both world with the Lakes to the west and the Dales to the east!

  • "The cottage itself was spacious and comfortable but did have a slight musty odour when we first got there."

This could, understandably, be due to it not being used over the last year or so. There was a slight lack of kitchen utensils and a sharp knife however this did not spoil our stay. It is a great location for visiting local attractions and has plenty of walking routes nearby.

  • "This was our first experience of living in a cottage on a farm."

We had a family of six people and it was spacious and comfortable. We even had our cat with us but that's another story! Come prepared with supplies as the local amenities are sparse so you'll have to drive for around 15 minutes to get to the nearest shops. We had an amazing week with trips every day to various attractions around the Lake District usually driving between 20-45 minutes to many of them. Would highly recommend Mount Cottage to anyone who was looking for a nice break within easy reach of the Lakes.

Also the mattress in the front bedroom was in desperate need of replacement. This was a lovely cottage ideal for commuting to nearby attractions. The owners were lovely and met all needs quickly and the kids loved the play area and the goats! Thankyou

  • "The location is just stunning."

Although it was closer to the M6 than we envisaged, it didn't detract from the stunning countryside at all. So many walks to do from the front door and the river is simply stunning. Kendal is only 20 minutes away and 40 minutes to Bowness. We felt like we'd been away for more than a week, totally relaxed - just from the sheer loveliness and escapism of the break. We found plenty to do in the area around the cottage and so only ventured out in the car on 2 days!

Being a family of 7, myself, husband, our son and his wife plus 3 grandchildren aged 11, 9 and 7 the cottage was perfect. Very clean on arrival and well equipped. The kids loved fishing with nets on the river and there was plenty of places locally to visit. The chair in the little alcove under a skylight was fab for me. I have bad mobility problems and it was really comfortable. The beds were all Comfy and the showers were excellent. Some people have said the M6 was close - it is but we were not disturbed in any way by the traffic. Would recommend you visit the cottage, it’s in a great remote location and having its own enclosed garden area and the adventure playground for the kids were a great bonus.

Kitchen well equipped. Unfortunately place mats and coasters removed due to current restrictions. I was concerned about marking furniture. Beds varied between hard and soft all with snow white bedding and bouncy pillows. Garden area a mix of concrete and stones, great for the dog not so good for a toddler. High chair and stair gate provided for us. Lots of outdoor space along the river but dogs need to be on lead in many fields with the sheep. Picnic benches along the river. Cleaning equipment provided for play area. Shared outdoor bins washed daily. Narrow mile long tarmac track to cottage but plenty passing places. Owner was on site every morning so any problems could be resolved. Plenty parking.

  • "Fantastic location surrounded by the hillside, set back from the main road along a winding single track that runs along side the river."

We underestimated the proximity to M6 and main rail line, so there was a little bit of noise, but we found the trains to be louder than the traffic on the M6. Still the noise was acceptable and shouldn't put you off. Lovely property with some fantastic features. Shame that the velux window wasn't bigger to enjoy more of the view. Beds are getting abit flat and hard, plus the TV's were somewhat limited, but the technology was a minor issue only experienced on a bad day for weather. Overall, we would still love to return to this property in the future. Owners seemed really nice and available if we needed them. Take some of the essentials (bread/milk etc) with you as local shopping is either one of the service stations or nearby towns.

About the location

Kendal 13 miles; Penrith 17 miles; Windermere 19 miles.

The charming old village of Tebay sits near the eastern fringe of the Lake District National Park. The village itself winds its way along the edge of the main thoroughfare and the traditionally whitewashed Cross Keys Inn has been there for 500 years or more. The inn is reputedly haunted by the ghost of the Tebay Witch, Mary Baynes. Along with its better-known neighbours of Kendal, Sedbergh and Appleby-in-Westmorland, the area is surrounded by lovely rolling countryside and beautiful scenery. Nearby Orton has a local pub serving good food, a Post Office/shop, tea rooms and the famous handmade chocolate shop. A lovely village green surrounded by 17th and 18th century cottages adds to its charm and there is a farmers' market in the village square on the second Saturday of every month. Take a short drive and discover the unspoilt lake of Haweswater, or take advantage of the excellent road links to the Lake District, the Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales.
