  • "Very clean and tidy, well furnished, well equipped."

Maintenance needs a little attention, but would not stop us from visiting again. Already booked this cottage for next year.

  • "While the cottage was clean, it did look a little run down, some of the equipment was a bit lacking, the on/off switch on the oven was broken and while the owner did give us a pair of pliers to turn it on and off it was difficult to tell what temperature it was on."

All the carpets could do with replacing or at the very least a good clean, the flooring in the bathroom was cracked and lifting which could have an adverse effect on the whole of the bathroom if left.

  • "This was a very comfortable and well furnished cottage let down by poor maintenance The blinds in the living room were broken and the washing machine and dishwasher were badly fitted There weren’t enough side plates if you were using the dishwasher ( should be 8 not 6) also no coffee percolator which was surprising as coffee is now more widely drunk than tea!"

(there were 2 teapots) The wardrobe in the double bedroom had a hinge hanging off and the floor in the main bathroom was torn near the shower where there was damage to the sub floor The rear garden fence was leaning and propped up with stays and the grass was overgrown We were also surprised that there wasn’t any visitor book or welcome sheet with local information such as nearest doctors, supermarkets and places to eat We would have given this 5 stars if not let down by poor maintenance

  • "A very warm and friendly welcome from the owner on arrival."

Well equipped kitchen and dining area. Comfortable suite and bed, slept well. Lovely enclosed garden to the rear with patio and garden furniture. Log fire with extra logs in a basket. Didnt use it because the cottage was lovely and warm. Easy parking outside door. Overall an enjoyable, relaxing stay. There is however some slight maintenance needed. The patio has some loose and uneven flags which i tripped on a couple of times. Conifers at the front door could do with cutting back to gain easier access. We stayed when the starlings were nesting so ended up with parts of the patio covered in poo, so just be mindful that birds do nest in the buildings, very entertaining to watch though.

Not our first visit to these cottages. Swift cottage did not disappoint, was clean and comfortable and well equipped for a stay away. Great base to explore the surrounding area. If you want to chill and relax you can sit in the big garden which our dog loved. We will definitely be back.

The cottage was bigger than expected. Our dog was happy with the enclosed garden. Our daughters loved the hot tub and were in there for 2 hours, I think, Saturday evening. The host was lovely and let us know where she would be if we needed anything. We will definitely be back as soon as we can for more exploring.

However, I think the property is looking a bit tired and could do with some overall tlc. The quality of the finishings are poor throughout and have clearly not been fitted by a professional. Saying that, we had a lovely stay and I’m sure others will too.

  • "The 2 bedroom cottage was absolutely stunning."

On arrival the owner who greeted us was very helpful. Advised us on a few things (from a distance due to Coronavirus) but was helpful throughout our stay if we needed anything. Very clean to walk in to which is important right now with Coronavirus! The kitchen was well equipped. The living area was very comfortable and cosy. The bedrooms were a good size with 1 ensuite and the beds were incredibly comfortable. Our room was lovely with the patio doors opening out onto the garden. The large garden area with lovely patio seating was wonderful to sit out in....the large lawn was loved by our 2 dogs too and very safe as it was all fenced in. All cooking utensils provided so good for self catering. (Our only feed back is to check plates, bowls, cups and glasses as we did find mugs and cups with chips in them. Of which we returned 2 of the mugs but found more chipped cups) But other than that it's a fabulous place to stay. Some nice dog walks locally too, especially back across the railway line and down to the station...a nice quiet walk. The Duke Of Cumberland Pub is about a 10 minute drive, but highly recommended for meals. We would certainly stay here again!

  • "Fantastic cottage, spacious and clean."

Good amenities, lovely large kitchen/dining room/lounge with log burner- you could help yourself to extra logs for £4 a bag and just leave the money when you leave. Our two Boston Terriers loved the big enclosed garden and we loved the large courtyard where you can park right outside your door. Great location to visit Hadrian’s wall, Gretna Green etc and loads of walks, parks, hills and forests nearby. Great pub serving lovely food, The Howard Arms a short drive away in Brampton and a cracker The Samson Inn in Gilsland where we ate after Hadrian’s wall at Housesteads. All in all a fab stay, we even asked to stay an extra night and luckily they had availability. Highly recommended.

Beautiful setting and such a nice, big garden. It was a real shame that the hot tub was really dirty and only one jet worked the summer house was a bit of a mess. Definitely needs to be sorted out so it is as brilliant as everywhere else. No tea and milk welcome pack was a bit of a surprise too but just little notes for improvement and I would definitely stay again.

The open fire was a lovely feature and loved sitting there on a night with it roaring away. The garden was fantastic for our two dogs as it was safe and they could not get out. The kitchen was stocked to allow you to cook anything and shops are only a few miles away. I was disappointed that the cottage we had did not have a hot tub and the communal hot tub was filthy so could not have used this during the stay. If you want a hot tub holiday you need to check if the cottage has one or that the communal hot tub is cleaned ad ready for use just a short walk across the courtyard. We would definitely come back to these cottages

It was very comfortable and clean and a great base for our trip away. The host is great, and informative. The hot tub was fab, and how we spent our evenings. I was there with a friend and my dog. There was plenty of lovely local walks, Talkin Tarn Country Park was a favourite. The walk along the lake was beautiful, and the coffee and cakes from the tearoom were delicious, it's only a 5 minute drive away from the cottage. Miltonrigg woods is also a lovely walk, it's within walking distance from the cottage. Milton itself is quite a quiet place, and if you aren't into walking there's Brampton which is only a few minutes from swift cottage. There's plenty pubs, restaurants and shops there. The Cranston food market is amazing! I bought lots of nice meats from there to take home. The Bite cafe and gallery was our favourite place to eat out. This was my second visit to swift cottage, and I plan on returning soon.

The cottage was fantastic and cosy making it feel like our home for the week. The owners were friendly but not intrusive at all; the dogs were more than welcome and the cottage garden was fully enclosed so they could run and play. The owners gave us a basket full of logs for the fire; first batch free of charge...due to the colder nights we had 4 fires which was lovely. All in all we could not fault this holiday...from the little extras like the loo rolls which make a difference. We are already looking to book again for next year. Definitely one of a kind and firmly recommended.

About the location

MILTON

Brampton 2 miles; Hadrian's Wall 7 miles; Carlisle 11 miles.

The small rural village of Milton is ideally placed for exploring northern Cumbria, including not-to-be-missed Hadrian's Wall, the lovely coastline of the Solway Firth and the dramatic northern Lake District National Park. The nearby market town of Brampton has a rich and colourful history going back to the Roman occupation, Border raiders from Scotland and the Jacobite uprisings. Bonnie Prince Charlie established his headquarters in one of the old buildings in Brampton, which is now a shop. A few miles outside Brampton is Talkin Tarn Country Park. It covers 180 acres, 65 of which make up the Tarn, a 10,000 year old glacial lake, fed by underwater springs. Further south is Gelt Woods which is an ancient woodland with the River Gelt running through. A superb base for exploring this historic and scenically beautiful area.
