"We loved our stay at Old Cottage."
It was perfectly placed for us two walkers and we only used our car a couple of times during our weeks stay as there was plenty to explore close at hand. The cottage was great to return to after a day of walking. We were lucky with the weather but are aware that there are lovely places within an easy drive to explore on rainy days. Our hosts who lived next door were very welcoming but did not impose on us during the week. We mainly ate our evening meals in the cottage. The kitchen is small but perfectly suited for cooking up a fresh meal. We went to The Black Bull just up the road from the cottage and had a lovely meal with friends and a nice chat with the staff. Looking forward to future stays at the cottage. Wild Boar fell beckons!
"Brilliant location, lovely owners next door, great pub round the corner."
The heating is noisy when on and you can’t control it was the only downside. But I must say the owners put it on more for me as I was concerned our baby might get cold in the night and couldn’t have been more accommodating! We really enjoyed our stay.
"When we arrived we had a useful chat with the very friendly owner who pointed out all the local points of interest."
We had a very enjoyable week, mostly in the dales with a couple of trips across to the lakes. One highlight was seeing a Merlin and some grouse up near Middleton-in-Teesdale. We had variable weather, sunny 21°C one day and 2” of snow another! The cottage is warm and cosy with good views across the countryside.
"Lovely appartment in beautiful quiet little village."
We were greeted by lovely hosts, and we'd not hesitate to come back.
"Location of the cottage is great it has easy access to the Lake District."
The cottage is comfortable and quiet. There is a pub not more than a minute walk away which serves good food. The owners live next door, they made us very welcome when arrived.
"A lovely cottage in a very small peaceful village."
A perfect place to stay and explore the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.
Lovely and helpful owners are just next door to answer any questions if needed. Kitchen is a bit small, but has most of the stuff needed (although no washing machine). Fabulous location for walks. Local pub is friendly place and does great food
"We had a wonderful stay at Old Cottage, thank you."
It had everything we expected and needed and was an ideal base for our walking holiday . If we were to be really picky..... it would be great if the shower was a bit more powerful. But it was still fine as is. Thank you again a lovely stay in a great cottage.
"We had a wonderful break and absolutely fantastic weather!"
The cottage was clean, cosy, well equipped and the owner was really friendly and welcoming. Great location and we have no criticisms. The only thing we couldn't get to work perfectly was the fridge which wouldn't go as cool as we expected even when adjusted, but nothing went off except a few forgotten sausages so no real problem!
"I would have liked to have had a bigger freezer facility."
the small freezer section of the lader fridge could not freeze coolbox blocks. some ice lollies melted. Generally this property has very high quality appointment - it is clear that the landlady cares a lot about it. Very pleasant conversations with owners.
"Lovely old cottage with a friendly owner who gave good advice about places to visit."
Scenery in and around the village was amazing with interesting wildlife and a fantastic Victorian Railway Station nearby. Ideal location for walking or visiting historical sights. Will return here.
Lovely village, shame pub was closed but it was due to lockdown. Would rebook
"The cottage was perfect for our family."
*streams, walks a friendly donkey all minutes away (and a great local pub that seems very popular) *Best of both worlds as lakes and Yorkshire dales are close by. (wensleydale cheese factory, James Herriot museum are worth a visit. We booked an adventurous Ghyll Scramble in lakes) *local mountain walks for the bairns (nine standards Rigg) is a short drive away to start and Tourist info in Kirkby Stephen will have good guides to start you off (make the walk less strenuous as you can park quite high up in some areas *cottage was lovely and cosy. We had everything we needed plus WiFi was a bonus for the gadget hubby who brought the fire stick with him. Rainy day movies were easy to play. Owners have also left some DVDs too. *we packed some small games too (uno, dobble) *Forbidden Corner is also a recent fave and well worth travelling to (if you're a big kid) and do the kids treasure hunt.
"Plenty of walking for me and my dog, she really enjoyed it, would go again sometime."
"Lovely cottage within walking distance to pub."
footpaths on doorstep with beautiful scenery.
"Host were very attentive as times can be lots of information lovely village and ..."
Host were very attentive as times can be lots of information lovely village and local pub brilliant but the situation of the cottage was perfect for our needs walking scenery and amenities close by
"The cottage is home from home, everthing you need , open fells for walking, interesting places to visit, a fantastric pub just 100 yards from the cottage where they serve really good food."
Then back to the cottage and a comfy bed. This is our second stay at The Old Cottage, we would highley recommend a stay in this lovely cottage.
"Lovely quirky cottage in a quiet location but within an easy journey of lots of interesting places to visit."
Great walks in the local area particular the old railway trail and around Kirkby Stephen. We even managed a big walk up to Nine Standards Rigg -well worth it for the views. Leave the car and have a stroll!
"A lovely cosey cottage in a beautiful setting."
The owners were lovely and live next door to the cottage. Nateby is a pretty little village with a nice dog friendly pub which serves the most fabulous meals. Very well placed for visiting the Lakes and Dales but lots of nice local walks too. Thoroughly recommended.
"Clean, comfortable cottage in an ideal location for exploring the Lake District and North Yorkshire."
Pleasant, helpful owners. Cottage has everything you may need to make your stay enjoyable.
"Nice quiet location ideal for trips out"
"Loved this holiday!"
Really lovely owners who live next door and were on hand if needed but equally gave us our own space. Very quiet place to be but good attractions near by which we visited on recommendations from other customers and lovely to get away from busy lives for some peace to rest. Would definitely book again!
"Jenny and John the owners were very welcoming lovely people very friendly and chatty fantastic holiday cottage was great in its quirky way would recommend to anyone."
"We had a great time visiting Cumbria and the Lake District these past 2 weeks."
The cottage was exactly as described and was perfect for my wife and I along with our 2 boys, (12 & 9) On arrival we were met by the owner who showed us around the cottage and gave us some info on the local area, despite being right next door there was no intrusion and we were left to enjoy our break, as we began to unload the car, she said to the boys, these walls are 3 foot thick, make as much noise as you want :-). The cottage had everything we needed from a cooker and microwave to all of the utensils and pots and pans for those nights where we wanted to save a bit of cash and cook in. Bedding and towels were all provided, and on the middle Saturday we were asked if we wanted fresh and clean of everything. The upside down layout of the cottage was amusing to my youngest with the main bedroom and bathroom/shower on the ground floor and kitchen, living room and 2nd bedroom on the 1st floor. The living room was nice and homely and mid way through the holiday we were already dreading having to leave. If you want to want to eat out and have a few drinks, the Nateby Inn, which you can see from the front door of the cottage is a lovely place to spend an evening and have some good food. Im not a regular pub visitor but could happily sit in there for the evening. A short trip down the road is Kirkby Stephen which has some great little shops along with a Co-Op where you can get any bits and pieces you may need, should you need to do any washing there is a good launderette behind the chippy. If you fancy a breakfast I highly recommend the Mulberry Bush. The area as whole is stunning, we travelled out everyday taking in York to the east and then over to St Bees for the beach to the west whilst also taking a motor boat out on Coniston and Derwent and then walking/hiking up The Old Man of Coniston. If you are looking for somewhere to go with your family to see some of the bet sites the UK has to offer, then I would say you have to visit Cumbria and the Lakes and what better place to stay than the Old Cottage in Nateby, I have nothing but good memories of this trip and a few thousand photos.
"Our host Jenny and her husband were very friendly & helpful."
Although not walkers we did venture out most days, we also visited many small villages & towns where we were welcomed. In particular we were welcomed warmly by the new owner of the Nateby Inn(Black Bull) not to be mistaken as the Black Bull in Kirby Stephen. Should the Nateby Inn's new owners ideas take off then the area should be well remembered by people dining and drinking there as they pass through or stay overnight.
"Lovely, quiet village, great owner, beautiful walks all around."
"We had a lovely warm welcome from the owners next door who were helpful in storing our bicycles for us in their garage."
The house was very clean and the bedrooms neat and reasonably spacious for a small Cottage. The only drawback was the lack of a large enough space for the table for us 4 adults to all enjoy an evening meal together. The village is very lovely and quiet and full of birdsong at that time of year. Local cycling and walking is excellent, the scenery lovely , and we would definitely go back again.
"A lovely cottage in a quiet hamlet."
Friendly & helpful owners live in the attached cottage
"The cottage was very comfortable and very good value, we would certainly use this accommodation again if I was staying in the area."
The cottage was adjacent to open country with great walks. Good pub close by and the village of Kirkby Stephen was a pleasant walk away.
"A little disappointed with Old Cottage, it took untill the Sunday evening to get the heating sorted, not good when there is still snow on the ground outside, owners had control of heating, no thermostat in the cottage so had to keep resetting the radiators, only one tea towel, no oven dishes/trays these did arrive when asked, but should have been there from the start, NO oven gloves, which did not arrive, cottage comfortable, but could have been better."
"Lovely cottage in very picturesque village."
Lovely walks on your doorstep! Owners very friendly and approachable. Area very dog friendly.
"Very Costa cottage"
"The cottage was an upside down cottage ie bedroom bathroom downstairs and lounge and Kitchen with another bedroom upstairs, we kept going the wrong way very quirky but fun."
Good position close to the Nateby Inn, who did some excellent meals, Kirby Stephen was only 5 minutes in the car, with numerous shops to refill your cupboard and that extra bottle of wine. The owners of the cottage Jenny & John were very friendly and living just next door if we needed anything, which we did not, as the cottage had everything we needed nice and warm, great shower and comfy beds, the WiFi worked really well. the area was nice and peaceful, small sitting out area at the front, and room for 1 car at the side of the cottage. we would certainly go back again. Thank you.
"We loved the cottage and friendly people, absolute pleasure!"
"If people wish to enjoy a quiet break in a well presented cottage, with great owners, in a quiet village, with very friendly locals and a hotel nearby which serves great food at a reasonable price, this is the place to go."
I have no complaints, and I almost forgot the whole area is very dog friendly, with numerous walks. Also there are many small towns to visit within easy driving distance although some of the country roads are rather challenging, but enjoyable, with great scenery.
"The owners are very friendly people and can offer you ideas and information on the area, everything was ready early so was able to go straight in on arrival,a very good location for lakes and dales with great walks from the door,we took our small dog with us and he was welcomed everywhere, the local pub 2 min walk away is excellent for meals and dog friendly."
We had a great holiday and would return again
"This is a wonderful well kept cottage."
Perfect location for visiting the Dales and the Lakes.
"I'm definitely going back and have already recommended both the cottage and the area in general to my family."
We may make it a big family trip next time. The owner lives next door and was super friendly and accommodating. The cottage is stuffed with old world charm but up-to-date technology and cleanliness. It's right on the edge of a tiny village, just before the cattle grid and hills. So peaceful.
"Lovely cottage in stunning location."
Very clean tidy and comfortable. Local facitlities good. Lovely friendly people. We will definitely return. A*****.
"A lovely old cottage located in a small, quiet village, but only a mile from the nearest town."
Owners were very friendly and welcoming and the locals were also very friendly. Superb pub just a couple of minutes walk away. Lovely scenery all round and some superb walks.
"Obviously no adverse comment to make."
the cottage is situated in a lovely village. the owners together with the locals were very friendly and accommodating. the cottage itself was excellent.
"We have been to the Old Cottage in Nateby for the last three years."
The cottage has everything you need for a self accommodation holiday. It is spotlessly clean and the owners are very nice people and very helpful. Our grandaughter loves it as much as we do.
