  • "The property was perfect as a base for sight seeing to Hadrian's Wall and other places."

But it was also fabulous for some cosy, rainy days inside in front of the fire. Traveling with my sister, we also prepared some meals in the awesome kitchen. The cottage is so roomy and beautifully decorated. The cottage really is stunning! Love that each double bedroom has an ensuite and tv. So you can get some quiet time too. And my first time with a hot tub! Loved it!! It is clear that cleanliness is a priority which suits me! We really loved our stay and I hope to return with my husband and parents.

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at High Rigg Woodland Cottage."

The cottage was immaculately presented and the accommodation is well laid out. We particularly liked the open plan living area. The cottage has everything you need and Brenda and David are on hand should anything arise. The cottage is in a peaceful location overlooking well kept gardens and a lovely pond. The 5 star rating is spot on and reflects what Woodland Cottage has to offer. The cottage is well situated to explore what Cumbria has to offer and the Lakes (Ullswater) are only about an hour away with Windermere only a little further on. We would definitely return to Woodland Cottage. Thanks again Brenda and David.

  • "We had booked for 2 nights with friends and had such a lovely drive up to Brampton and couldn't believe how beautiful the grounds were when we arrived."

The sun was shining and we enjoyed drinks on the decking overlooking the glorious countryside in the sunshine. We had booked Woodland cottage and could not fault a thing. The owners greeted us and were so friendly and advised they lived on site and just to give them a shout if we needed anything. The pictures of the cottage online didn't do accommodation justice, it was absolutely beautiful. The bedrooms were so lovely and spacious with separate doors out on to the terrace which lead to a private hot tub. The views were stunning and we had the most relaxing time. We didn't want to leave. Amazing hosts, location and facilities and we can't wait to return.

It's a perfect base to explore in every direction. The hot tub was a god send after walking a chunk of Hadrian's Wall. The cottage is a cosy, comfortable home from home, with everything you need to have a lovely break away. We will be re-booking.

  • "Loved our stay at High Rigg Woodland cottage."

Its about an hour from the lakes and set in peaceful grounds with a small lake and views out to the countryside. It was beautifully decorated, warm on our arrival and Brenda had very kindly received our tesco delivery and put things in the fridge and freezer in case we were late. Our hosts were lovely and replied immediately to any queries. They couldn’t have been more helpful. The 2 king size beds were comfortable and the bedrooms very tastefully decorated (if you’re bothered by light, make sure you take an eyemask). Our kids were too old to share a bed but we just had to ask about a camp bed and magically appeared, with bedding. There’s even a roll top bath in the main bedroom but we didn’t use it due to the wonderful covered jacuzzi which was set at a cosy 39 degrees. The kitchen is well equipped with washer/dryer, 2 ovens, microwave, kettle, toaster, scales, food processor, dish towels, and a cake mixer! There’s even a small cleaning pack provided for the first couple of days. If you’re heavily reliant on wifi, take plenty of data to use as a personal hotspot as it is patchy. We didn’t mind as it was a great way to detox from tech and any extra time was spent in the jacuzzi! We could attach our hard drive to the tv to watch movies and there’s also a dvd player but to be honest, there’s so much to do, we didn’t have time for much TV. There are instructions to take all left over food/condiments away with you so make sure you pack oil and seasonings, dishwasher tabs, laundry tabs, and extra binbags if you plan to cook. This is a stunning place for a peaceful break, very near Hadrian’s wall, and a fun scenic drive to the lakes. Would recommend Gelt and Cotehill Woods walks which are close by and easy, kayaking in Windermere, and a Segway forest ride in Grizedale forest which is also good for cycling although there are no easy trails in this forest. If you want easy walks or cycle rides in the lakes, do your research beforehand. Next time I’ll hire an electric bike

  • "A very well appointed cottage."

Clean and comfortable. The Christmas decorations were exceptional and a joy to arrive to. Could have done with tongs for the log burner which was essential given the time of year. I felt the heating was struggling to cope with open plan area with high ceilings. Plenty of outdoor seating and decking to enjoy the grounds and views. The location is a little isolated but well placed to explore the surrounding area and tourist spots.

  • "This was our second Christmas visit to High Rigg having stayed last year in Garden Cottage."

If anything we enjoyed this year even more, the cottage was decorated so beautifully. Brenda excels in staging the accommodation for Christmas and even the little shepherd huts get the festive look too. She really does make such an effort to make it feel so cosy and Christmassy and there was some bubbly and Christmas cake to welcome us. Hot tub was used every single evening thanks to it being undercover this time in the Woodland Cottage. Coming back in from the cold to a blazing log fire was just heaven. We had nice meals in both The Queens, Warwick on Eden and Howard Arms in Brampton so would recommend those. The views from both cottages are simply gorgeous, had a beautiful sunrise over the hills on Christmas morning too. Can genuinely say we will be going for the hat trick and booking up for next Christmas again

It is set in a beautiful location to relax. The owners left us to it but were also around and live just a couple of doors up, if we did want them for anything. They also asked how our stay was going/if everything was ok 1 or 2 days into the holiday. The hot tub was great, especially for relaxing in after our long walks and was also ready for use on our arrival. Hope to stay again as we had a lovely time staying here and there's plenty more walks and sights to see in the nearby areas. Lots of leaflets were provided about nearby attractions/areas to visit which was also helpful, having never been to Cumbria before.

We struggled at first to work them and figure out which had a grill and which was best for what and gave up in the end and just used the one that seemed to work sufficiently for what we were doing but it would have been far better with instructions. • "This property is set in a stunning location!"

The views from all the rooms are fantastic - whatever the weather! It's worth it just for that! The cottage itself is very well appointed, warm and comfortable with plenty of storage space as well as very adequate provision for four people. The hot tub was ready on arrival and proved quite a hit with the younger members of the party! The parking is rather better than the listing suggests with adequate space for four or more vehicles within a few feet of the entrance to the cottage. Some might consider the approach road a bit bumpy, but if you take it steady, it's fine and actually very much in keeping with the rural setting. The provision of fuel for the log burner and the pods for the coffee machine, as well as slippers and dressing gowns was much appreciated. The beds were really comfortable. Each room had efficient, independently controlled electric radiators - a useful feature. The kitchen / dining/ seating area was large and well appointed with all mod cons. High Rigg is conveniently situated near a market town, nice village pubs and with good access to Hadrian's Wall and great walks through Gelt Woods and Talkin Tarn. A trip to Carlisle is very worthwhile and not far away. While the Lakes are within driving range, we found enough to occupy us nearby and so did not make that trip. We found the property to be excellent value and the owners very approachable and anxious to make sure we enjoyed our stay. It would have been useful to have had a downloadable inventory which would have cut down the list of things to bring along. It would also have been good to have sheets of local walks contained within the welcome pack. We already knew about Gelt Woods and Talking Tarn or we would have missed out somewhat.

The grounds around the cottage are worth a mention, beautifully kept with many points of interest, ie the fishing pond, the wicker stag nestled against the tree, the rolling hills viewed from the balcony. The peacefulness was just brilliant. The furniture inside the cottage was quality, comfortable and everything you needed, the bedrooms were warm, with plenty of storage, lovely bedding and soft cushions and pillows. The en-suites had a wonderfully hot towel rail and the towels were thick and good quality. Shower was very good and a nice touch to be provided with shower gel and hand soap. We had the wow factor as we opened the door on arrival, the lovely twinkling lights were lit above the fireplace and the huge clock on the wall of the open plan kitchen was lit. There was a lovely plate of home made freshly baked scones with butter and jam on the table and a nice bottle of wine in the fridge. About the location

BRAMPTON, CUMBRIA

Carlisle 10 miles.

The market town of Brampton is the ideal base for exploring Hadrian’s Wall. The town boasts a rich and colourful history going back to the Roman occupation, Border reivers from Scotland and the Jacobite uprisings, plus bonnie Prince Charlie established his headquarters in one of the old buildings in Brampton. In the centre of the town is Moot Hall, which was built in 1817, and now houses the Tourist Information Centre, and there is a large motte to the east of the town, which is 135 feet high and has the statue of the 7th Earl of Carlisle on it. A few miles outside Brampton is Talkin Tarn Country Park. It covers 120 acres of farmland and woodland, 65 of which make up the Tarn, a 10,000 year old glacial lake, fed by underwater springs. Two miles away is Gelt Woods, which is an ancient woodland and RSPB nature reserve and has the River Gelt running through it. Brampton is a wonderful base for exploring this historic and scenic area.
