  • "We had the most fantastic week at Peat Gate."

The shepherd’s hut was cosy and so well-equipped and the owner was always helpful and friendly. A very comfy bed and gorgeous log burner so even though it was cold outside we were lovely and warm. We loved the welcome hamper too. The location was amazing too, really near the best bits of Hadrian’s Wall and not far from lovely Hexham, the Northumberland coast snd the Lakes. Absolutely perfect!

  • "A return visit to the Shepherds hut was just as lovely as our first visit!"

We returned to walk Hadrian's Wall this time around and with the hut being a short drive away it worked very well indeed. The lovely hut was as comfortable as remembered, spotlessly clean, well equipped and the welcome pack from Helen was very much appreciated. The spring birdlife on the moors was wonderful to behold and already I am missing the sound of the curlews and the diving and calling of the lapwings. Many thanks to Helen for a wonderful stay.

Warm, comfortable and very cosy indeed, Helen made sure that all your needs were catered for, with a lovely welcome pack of food and a bottle of wine waiting to meet you on your arrival. The setting was wonderful too, with quiet and beauty all around and amazing views, but only a short drive in to the village of Haltwhistle. The Tyne valley is a very prettyl place indeed and just a short drive to the World Heritage site of Hadrians Wall too. Thank you Helen for such a lovely stay

We were greeted by the very friendly owner and shown the hut which is in a lovely, quiet position with great views; although small it is very clean and comfortable with everything we needed for our stay. There are some excellent links to the Pennine way and plenty of local foot paths, walking to Haltwhistle for a meal was pleasant through the woods following the river. Hadrian’s wall gave added interest and is a must to visit, just a short drive away.

  • "We had a fabulous time at Peat Gate Shepherd's Hut."

The location is absolutely stunning - the hut is set, on its own in a field which is left uncut so is a beautiful meadow. The views are stunning, with Hadrian's Wall in the distance and fabulous birds to watch. The facilities in the hut are all excellent quality. We were nervous about the double ring plug in hob, that it might be difficult to use, but it heated up very quickly and was as good as an ordinary hob to cook on. The bed, duvet and pillows were all extremely comfortable so we slept brilliantly. There is a good selection of games and walk books and even a telescope and stargazing literature to keep you entertained. Outside there are two wooden garden chairs to sit on and there are two fold out tables that you can eat at inside or out - which we pushed together to make one larger table. The host gave us a lovely welcome and put out lots of thoughtful items for the start of our stay. We had a relaxing and peaceful time away and would definitely recommend this property wholeheartedly. Thank you so much for our time away.

The host was so welcoming and helpful and the property was very well thought out to a high standard. It had everything I needed for a very comfortable and cosy week and I would recommend this property for anyone who wants to get away from it all. It is also perfect for solo travellers, I didn't feel vulnerable at any time during my stay. It is set about 4 miles from Hadrians Wall but it is very easy to access the various sites and the wall itself from the property by car. A walk in the surrounding countryside is also recommended with some great history to be discovered.

  • "The warm and friendly welcome from Mr and Mrs Summerbee, (plus the flowers, wine butter bread and eggs!"

) despite us being about an hour late in arriving. Peat Gate is an excellent place to explore the border between Northumberland and Durham especially Hadrian's Wall and Haltwhistle is a little town which has everything you need on a self catering holiday and a good public transport centre if you don't want to be driving all the time. We spent all three days walking and found people friendly and helpful plus excellent facilities such as The Sill, the new visitor centre near the Wall and also the Milecastle Inn, also close to the Wall, where we had a very good roast Sunday lunch at a bargain price! Returning to the Shepherds Hut each evening was magical becasue it is so quiet and peaceful that we abandoned all ideas of listening to the radio and just sat and listened to curlews, owls, oystercatchers and the cries of many other birds. The Hut is a real Tardis - much bigger inside than it looks at first sight and very well equipped with high quality equipment and kept very clean and tidy. Yes, it's small, but it's all there and the layout has been carefully thought through and works very well indeed. We will certainly go there again and would recommend anyone who doesn't know the area and its people to give it a try - we are sure you won't be disappointed.

It's tiny, there's no denying that - but it's fully equipped, immaculately clean, well thought-out and the décor and general feel of the hut was homely and just right. The views from it, too, are superb - and it was a treat to sit in the doorstep in the early evenings with a glass of wine and a distant Hadrian's Wall, with the sheep and curlew for company … Thank you, too, to the owners for the goodies on arrival - the homemade bread and scones, the milk, eggs and bottle of wine.
