The internet worked perfectly throughout the whole week and it was great to also have sky tv on an evening in front of the log burner. Horrace Farm Cottage is a great base to explore the South Lakes from and we walked so much that we were grateful for a warm, comfortable and well equipped house to come back to at the end of each day. However, due to Covid 19the wedding was cancelled but as I still had the cottage booked and the time off work I thought I would still go ahead and have a well earned break with a friend and joined y my family for the middles weekend as planned . It was a well needed rest for us all in lovely country surroundings on a working farm. The family were lovely and so helpful during our stay even leaving us milk and freshly laid eggs for our arrival. All Covid 19 precautions were taken to make the cottage clean and sanitised and to follow social distancing when we met the family. The views were stunning from the front and back of the cottage especially from the bigger bedroom where you could sit in bed and watch the sheep and cows on the field. A great place to access the south lake tourist areas as well the beach at St Bees on the east coast. Ulverston was a 2 mile drive or walk from the cottage where many places to eat were available to meet all needs as well as supermarkets, small shops and a daily market. The Laurel and Hardy museum was a good visit for a rainy day and a lovely canal walk takes you to where it meets the sea and back. Great value for money for a family stay in Cumbria.

  • "We visited in February 2020, in the midst of storm Dennis."

Although the roads were free of snow and ice, I'd definitely check the weather before setting off (especially November - March), as the road to the cottage is steep and winding, so would imagine pretty treacherous if untreated in freezing conditions. The cottage is linked to the main house, which is a working farm, which is great, as you have direct contact with the owners. Steve, who lives in the farmhouse with his wife and son, gave us a lift into and from Ulverston, which was fantastic given that we wanted to go for a meal and drinks with the dog - which saved me a 3 km walk in the dark windswept road at 9:30 pm. The cottage itself was quite charming - open stonework, log fire and just the cosy rustic feel you'd expect from a cottage of this type. The kitchen facilities were great and has pretty much everything you need. There wasn't much in the way of condiments and other sundries, such as tea, milk coffee - which was fine, as we brought all that. But be prepared as it's a bit of a drive to the local Tesco. The cottage has WIFI and Sky TV and surprisingly for its remote location - even receives 4G signal. The shower was nice and hot and the bathroom is spacious. There are towels, but you may still want to take your own. The bedrooms were spacious, but not really anywhere to hang or store your clothes and the bed I slept in (single) was ok, but not overly comfortable. As the cottage is part of a working farm, please bare in mind that you have quite a lot cows mooing and pooing just metres from the cottage, this wasn't an issue for me, but may put some off. In terms of location, the cottage itself is pretty remote and although you can take a walk around the vicinity, there are much more popular, prettier and well trodden parts of the lakes. That said, its not too far (35 km) from the more popular destinations, such as Ambleside, Windermere etc

We have stayed in many places around the country from really nice hotels to some right dives but for the money you pay/the location/the cottage probably the best place we have stayed, really didn't want to leave. The property

A lovely, semi-detached cottage, attached to the owner’s home, on a working livestock farm, situated in the hamlet of Pennington, three miles from Ulverston near The Cumbria Way.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Cumbria, it is a great touring base from which to explore this lovely part of the country.

This traditional cottage has a well-equipped kitchen and dining area on the ground floor, with an open plan staircase leading up to a cosy sitting room with a woodburning stove, just the ticket for cooler evenings whilst planning the next day's adventure.

There are also two comfortable bedrooms on this floor, one double and one twin, together with a bathroom with a bath and separate shower.

Outside this lovely cottage is a patio where you can enjoy dining alfresco, or relax with a refreshing drink whilst discussing the day’s adventures.

The character town of Ulverston is a pleasant three-mile drive, with superb views across the estuary.

It plays host to many festivals throughout the year and one of its claims to fame is its connection with Stan Laurel, who was born here.

From the cottage there is a country road which meanders through to Coniston and is an absolute delight, affording breathtaking views towards the Coniston Fells, and passing through quaint Cumbrian villages with traditional pubs and attractive slate cottages.

As well as lovely local beaches, including Roan Head Beach, there is also a large nature reserve.

Another place to visit is Birkrigg Common, strewn with ancient remains and a fascinating place to walk and enjoy the beautiful countryside.

The Cumbria Way lies very close to the cottage so you can choose whether to walk into Ulverston or, for the intrepid walker, head towards Coniston.

A lovely cottage to be enjoyed at any time of the year.
