  • "We were warmly welcomed by the owner to this lovely, cosy cottage in a very pretty village."

It sleeps 4 comfortably and has large, roomy rooms, with a number of appliances: washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, microwave. The kitchen is well equipped. And we enjoyed the home made cakes that were left for us. The shared rear garden is large and private and can be secured if necessary. We found it was easier to let the dog out onto the front for a quick visit if necessary as that is easily secured by a garden gate. We managed to get the free-sat working by wiggling a cable, so we had sufficient television to watch for our very short stay when we weren't out and about exploring the area, for which Ravenstonedale is very well placed. Our only niggle was we couldn't get the radiator to work in the double bedroom and the windows are very draughty, so it was a bit chilly in there. No doubt had we been staying longer, the owner would have fixed it for us had we asked. The king size mattress seems to be an orthopedic mattress too, which might suit some but not others. We had a lovely stay, though, and would visit again.

  • "The property is lovely."

Very comfortable and warm. The garden is large and well maintained, and there are beautiful views of the countryside all around. Though it is not enclosed. It is so quiet. It's in a lovely little village. The only shops are in Kirkby Stephen or further, but we did see a supermarket delivery van in the village. The description says the main bed is a double, but we were very happy to discover that it is actually king size. There is a washing machine and dryer, which is brilliant. And the shower was great. A couple of little niggles: The pans are scratched to pieces and desperately need replacing. The cooking utensils look about 50 years old. Only 1 small window opens in the main bedroom. The other 2 wouldn't budge. The TV only gets about 20 channels. There is a box that I'm assuming gives access to the others, but I couldn't get it to do anything. The batteries were working and all the wires were in place, but nothing was happening. Don't know if the remote was broken. I mentioned it to the lady, who said her son-in-law sorts that out. But then we heard nothing more. They could do with installing a smart TV, or a Roku or similar, so you can at least watch catch up, or log into your own accounts. The property is cared for to a very high standard. Would definitely like to return. Out of interest, there is a funny hallway running almost the length of the property. It is completely wasted space at the moment. I would suggest the owners move the dresser out of there and make it a dining room. Currently the table is squashed up in the living room. It would make much more sense to give more room to sit around the table, which is currently impossible without moving the sofas. And it would give the hallway a purpose.

The king size bed was very comfortable. It was perfect for us with all we needed and the owners were very friendly and willing to help. The property is in a quaint little village perfectly situated to visit both the lakes and the dales. The fat lamb Inn just down the road serves great food and is dog friendly. All in all a great peaceful, beautiful place to stay.

Owners next door are very friendly and helpful and the view from the back garden is spectacular. Two good pubs within a few minutes walk and another a short drive or 35 min walk. Both pubs in the village do good food and serve real ale. The Kings Head is the best value, whilst the Black Swan is a bit more expensive, reflecting the type cuisine. A lovely location, especially now that the heather is purple. Several interesting small towns within easy reach.

  • "There is ZERO mobile phone coverage in this area for at least 3-4 miles."

This means we couldn't order food or book restaurants and had to drive miles out or way to have even a simple meal. There is insufficient smoke detectors fitted in the property (there's ONE) and given the size of the property there should certainly be far more: also Carbon Monoxide detectors as there were NONE. The propery is located in a position that is, even with the experience of two seasoned drivers, remote and difficult to negociate (see lack of mobile coverage). I would not recommend any of my friends to stay here as it is far too remote. The broadband was surprisingly good but the absolute lack of ANY basic (even 3G) mobile coverage was shocking. I would also suggest that they update the television to include services like Netflix -- this would cost them NOTHING as the guests could log into their own account -- but this was not remotely possible unless they chose to watch on their tablets via broadband.

In the fifteen years we have been renting out Oaklea I have never replied to a comment but I am incensed to fo do this time. First and most important is the comment no carbon Monoxide detector in the property but this is untrue it has always been in the utility room on a shelf. On the fire detector being only one it is in the hall between the kitchen and bedrooms and there are two outside doors to the bungalow. As for Ravenstonedale being a remote village we are seven miles from theM6 and approximately the same from the A66; most visitors comments are it is a beautiful village with 2 pubs within walking distance and another 1mile away. The telephone signal if not EE or Vodophone is not good but that is a government problem. We have no landline we both use mobile phones. As for experienced drivers these are some of the quietest roads in England so how does he manage in town traffic. Property Owner

  • "An excellent holiday cottage in a delightful village, with fabulous walks right from the doorstep."

The property is very spacious, extremely comfortable and immaculate throughout. In real life, we thought it was better than the photographs. Lots of cupboard and storage space in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom, which from our experience can be a problem in some holiday lets. Excellent private carparking facilities at the rear. Table and chairs at the front of the cottage and also in the large back garden for your use – we very much enjoyed using both with a lovely glass of wine. Were fortunate to meet the owners, who are so so friendly. A very enjoyable holiday in beautiful accommodation.

  • "We had a wonderful week at Oaklea in Ravenstonedale."

The cottage was perfect, just as described, well equipped and beautifully clean. Ravenstonedale is a gorgeous village, peaceful yet near to larger villages and small towns. Two lovely pubs in the village and The Fat Lamb is a great one to visit an easy stroll away. There are so many walks straight from the cottage door so we actually didn't explore the surrounding area as we intended so would love to come back for longer next time.

The cottage was everything as described, including a very useful utility room at the rear of the property. A very well equipped kitchen with everything that you need, a comfortable living/dining room and two excellent bedrooms. One small thing that would have been very usefull in the double bedroom would have been a shallow step to enable easier access to the bed for those who are shorter in stature, or with mobility issues. ( It had a very deep mattress !!)Plenty of space for clothes and a comfortable bed. A useful addition in the bathroom, was the separate shower cubicle. Everything considered, a very comfortable stay and would certainly recommend to others.

Although there are no shops in the village, the Black Swan has very good quality dining and is less than 10 minute walk. Kirkby Stephen is about a 10 minute drive and has a good range of shops. The house is extremely well equipped and to a high standard. All the rooms are a good size and the kitchen facilities excellent. Wifi works well and parking is easy. The location is quiet and the house itself is very comfortable. Sykes should make it clear that there is a good supply of towels and tea towels, despite what it states in their emails. It would also be helpful to correct the location information on Google which has the house in the wrong place.
